A word from Empellon Taqueria
Open for Lunch, Dinner & Brunch. We opened our doors on March 22nd, 2011 with the intention of treating tacos with a high level of respect and serving them in a fun environment.  Which is how I believe tacos should be enjoyed. We designed the menu with the idea that most ingredients worth eating can benefit further by being placed atop a well-made tortilla. We push our kitchen team to explore the ubiquitous flavors that we all love about Mexican cooking in this country as well as the less obvious ones that we all should love. Empellon's approach to cuisine is informed by authenticity but is not limited by it.

  • "Really great food, but the service was extremely rushed. We barely received our appetizers, and the main course arrived. And then the waitstaff came by every five minutes to see if we wanted our plates taken away...once when my fork was in midair. Wanted to have a relaxed meal, but it was difficult to do so when it felt like they were trying to turn the table within the first 15 minutes of our arrival."

  • "Alex Stupak deserves accolades. His food is a virtual 10/10. That's the reason I treated a party of 8 to dinner at Empellon Taqueria during my 5 day trip to New York from Toronto. I also dined at Empellon Cocina with my son. Alex Stupak deserves professional wait staff. Sadly, my very nasty experience at Empellon Taqueria is unparalleled as the worst and most unexpected restaurant experience of my life. This follows a year of dining in top restaurants in Toronto, Sydney, the Amalfi Coast, Vancouver, Paris, Provence, Berne and New York. Never mind a bitter taste in my mouth, I am literally shaken. Going forward, I will never ever place any personal belonging on a restaurant table ever again. What a nightmare this is."

  • "Great food and excellent drinks. We split 6 tacos and an order of guacamole between two people and were full. All the tacos were excellent (we tried Brussels sprout, duck and skirt steak). Brussels sprout wins for originality and deliciousness - that's the one we were still talking about the next day. Margaritas, both classic and original flavors, were well balanced and tasty. Chocolate dessert was outstanding. Loved the food, but the service was extremely rushed. We had an early res on a Friday, and I know they want to turn the table, but we had a three-course meal and two rounds of drinks in under 45 minutes. We were hungry, so we didn't ask them to slow down, but we definitely felt hustled. Service otherwise on point."

  • "I told them I drink martinis so they made me one with mezcal - super start to the meal. Then a lovely small plate of shrimp sliced thin with shaved fennel and sliced green apple. Then two tacos filled with pork shoulder, seared pineapple cubes and cilantro - excellent."

  • "I've been here several times and really enjoyed it. But this time when I brought some out-of-town foodie friends there, the experience was miserable. The noise level was through the roof. The place was so crowded that we kept getting jostled by passers by - they clearly need to get rid of a couple tables in the front room. And the service was terrible. The waitress was not at all friendly and was rushing us through the whole evening. The busboys were clearing plates faster than we could finish them. And kept taking glasses away before we were done with drinks. We were never asked if we wanted dessert or another round of drinks. We left and spent a whole lot more time and money at a much friendier place down the road."

  • "Empellon is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the food. The bar isn't too bad either, so you can get a drink as you wait for your table (good luck on Friday nights). I took my girlfriend and she rates it as one of her favorite spots in the city. Great location, great energy and great food (the Guac speaks for itself). Highly reccomend this place and make sure you tip well (they work hard to make sure you're having a good experience)."

  • "Fun spot, very lively scene. But too crowded, tables regular and group high tops...smashed together.not much room to enjoy. Room is attractive. We had 4 different margaritas/mescal drinks. Tasty interesting. Two starters came almost immediately after ordering. Chips and guac very good we'll seasoned. Tacos all good. Especially "pastrami" good and skirt steak. We were rushed the whole time...except when we ordered second round of drinks...it took forever..had to ask several times. As meal wound down...rushing out continued. Annoying. Dessert mediocre flan tasted more like chocolate pudding. We had fun but if I go back...it will be on a not busy night."

  • "Although Empellon Taqueria has the best fish tacos in New York (and their queso fundido and duck tacos are terrific, too), both my dining companion and I tried several different drinks and thought they all seemed watery, weak, and rather flavorless. To add insult to injury, the drinks are quite pricey. This is my second experience along these lines with the drinks here, and I really don't understand it, since the rest of the experience at Empellon is first-rate. If they would get their drinks in order I could come here all the time; as it is, I am reluctant, since although the food is amazing the drinks are a buzz-kill. Literally."

We ordered 6 different tacos, nothing blew me away and the barbacoa wasn't good at all. The presentation was lacking and the prices were too high for what they brought."

Only complaint had a few margaritas which came in a glass not much bigger than a shot glass and although they were really good they cost $12.   • "Wow. My husband and I had dinner here the other night. For a Monday, it was lively -- front room was packed, back room was less so. The food is to die for. We had smoked plantain sopas… appetizer size portions of the lamb, pork and steak tacos… and both desserts (chocolate flan and a fruity tarty item). I loved every bite. The the specialty margaritas were so interesting flavors and just delicious. We will definitely come back. Love this place."

  • "1. The food is over priced and to be honest, it doesn't taste any better than Blockheads. 2. It's called Appetizer and Main Course for a reason. My wife and I went her for Valentine's Day dinner. Ordered an appetizer and two mains. The appetizer was on the table for no more than 5 minutes when the server decided to bring out our main courses. I get that it's Valentine's Day in NYC, but for the price I'm paying, don't rush my meal and over crowd my small table. 4. The check came and there was an extra charge on my bill for $21. When I mentioned it to the waitress she didn't even look at the bill and said she would remove it. It was like they try to sneak in an extra charge hoping people have had a few too many margaritas to notice."

Everything took forever, and once we finally got our food, 2 members of our party did not receive their food for an additional 10 minutes. Luckily the food was excellent, it was just highly frustrating waiting so long for everything."

  • "I have dined here on numerous occasions, but never on a weekend night. We had a reservation at 8:00 p.m. on a Friday and it was almost impossible to get in the door of the restaurant. In the front room (with the bar, where we were seated) the din was deafening. Our waitress was very pleasant and dealt with the crush with aplomb, but I would strongly suggest eating in the back dining room if you want to be able to hear your date."

  • "The tacos we ordered were delectable! They came out hot and prepared with just the right amounts of accompaniments (the lengue was my favorite and I can't wait to try more tacos). Even though I'm not into Tex-Mex, the green queso with chorizo was memorable, the chorizo being the best Mexican chorizo I've tried in NYC (to-date). The michaladas were great too! The only dish I would not order again is the tuna tartar (ceviche), too much hot sauce, it overwhelmed the dish."

  • "We had the Serrano guacamole with seven salsas., and found the heat level bearable in all but the habanero. Each salsa in the first six had a delightful counterpart two higher in the list (particularly smoked cashew and chipolte) it was a very thoughtful balance of flavors. We started with the shortrib sopes and the cauliflower with almonds. The sopes were perfect savory bites, and the vegetables were good, although we were surprised that they were served cold. The dogfish tempura tacos were next-simply delicious, along with the pork shoulder al pastor. Those were also very good, and put me (pleasantly) in mind of Chinese spareribs. The cajeta-like chocolate flan with cinnamon-anise gelato was decadent. Definitely recommended."

The food was excellent and the portions large enough. The tacos were my favorite...skirt steak tacos, shrimp tacos, squash tacos...so good! The guacamole was excelent and came with a variety of sauces too. Would definitely recommned and return."
