A word from emmer & rye
Seasonally inspired, locally derived cuisine.

The story of emmer&rye began with a vision of the connection between food and community. Eventually, that vision found a home in a hundred year-old Victorian house at the top of Queen Anne hill.

Skillfully crafted dishes reflect the true flavor of the food and honor the seasons. Varied plate sizes offer the opportunity to share and savor. Creative cocktails provide a backdrop for the intersection of food and community.

emmer&rye brings together Queen Anne residents and non-residents alike to celebrate the bounty of the Pacific Northwest. emmer&rye focuses not only on serving the community, but also on purchasing from the community. Spending local and supporting small, like-minded businesses is part of emmer&rye’s ethos.

Third visit to Emmer & Rye was not as good as the first two - we went the last weekend before they were set to close their doors, and rather than having a lasting memory of a favorite dining spot, instead we found ourselves wondering if they were simply going through the motions in their last hours of existence...

  • Good food, a little salty

Food had good flavor, but salty. It would be nice if the cooks didn't salt the food so much. Salt as an inexpensive flavor enhanser is fine, but let me enhanse my own food. The feeling of eating in an old home converted into a restaurant is pleasant and the noise volume inside was quite good for conversation.

We had a delightful experience. The waitstaff was attentive without being overbearing. The food was nicely presented, interesting in concept, and we executed. The only disappointment was that they were out of the wine wanted. I would definitely return.

I was so excited to finally try Emmer & Rye. A friend & I went to try their Restaurant Week menu, and unfortunately the food fell a bit flat. Nothing was BAD, but nothing was amazing. It was all just OK. Our server wasn't rude, but wasn't friendly, and I got the sense that she wasn't a fan of the Restaurant Week crowd (understandable, but not helful to the restaurant if they want return customers). Also, I tried two wines recommended as pairings with the menu. They were out of one, and the substitute tasted like it had come from a 3-day-old bottle. I should have sent it back ($11/glass!), but I was a little afraid of oir server. The red wine I had with my beef was serviceable, but not worth $10+/glass! Healthy pours, though.

A bit like having dinner at Grandma's house. The farmy decor and glaring lighting don't take advantage of the beauty and charm of this old Queen Anne home. I am always looking for interesting and innovative incorporation of grains and veg into the menu and I think they've done a nice job with this.

Went here in the early evening with a romantic date. The quiet ambiance allowed us to enjoy the gentle rain during a relaxing meal. The servers are very hands-off, so if you're looking for a more private experience that's not rushed, you've found it here. The food presentation was spot-on, but the flavors of what I had were pretty average.

I enjoyed the intimate family style feel of the restaurant set in a traditional Queen Anne house. The food was delicious starting with the smooth and flavorful squash soup. The cod was cooked to perfection and served with grains and a celeriac puree, which all complemented each other so well. Finally, for a most delightful end to the meal, I ate the creme caramel with cinnamon cookie spoons, and I wouldn't have asked for a better finale to the meal. I would avoid ordering the bacon infused cocktail, though, as it has an overwhelming smoke flavor that cancels out the other tastes in the beverage. Overall, emmer&rye provided attentive service, relaxing and romantic ambiance, and a well-planned menu.

I've been here once for dinner so I was hoping we'd get a similar great experience for brunch. Not so. My friends ordered Eggs Benedict and they were....okay. Just okay. I ordered the farro fries and specifically asked for hollandaise on the side. My dish came lukewarm and with the hollandaise on top. It was one of the more expensive items on the menu and came with "foraged and wild mushrooms" - there was maybe a tablespoon of them total. The dish was tiny. I was completely underwhelmed. The waitress brought our check before we even finished our plates, and then never came back to pick it up. I had to go to the front desk. Kind of a let down experience and I don't plan on coming back for brunch. Hope dinner hasn't gone downhill too.

This was my second time at e&r, and my first time dining on their patio. The cheese plate, heirloom tomatoes and pork shoulder were perfect. We love Emmer and Rye because they change their menu regularly, so we know we are always going to encounter something new. They're food is far from ordinary: I had a chilled fennel soup with shrimp and cucumber slices last time and my husband really liked the pork belly, fava, shantrelle, eggplant pasta dish. Great place to go early before theater, PNB, or the opera, (just down the hill in lower QA). Always friendly, lovely servers.

I love that Emmer & Rye uses local, organic and sustainable ingredients to design their menu. You can absolutely taste it in the food. However you can also see it on the bill and in the portion sizes. Just be prepared. Rarely do I leave with leftovers (which is fine) until you pay the bill. All in all though it's worth it for fresh and healthy ingredients. Yum.

Food had many technical flaws and was poorly seasoned. My boyfriend's pork was very tough and overcooked. The sauce was the only way it was edible. Was way too expensive for the quality and preperation of ingredients. Server was nice but never told us about the specials and didn't greet us for over 10 min after being seated. The best thing we ate was the huckelberry cheesecake. It was delicious.

Love the seasonal, locally sourced menu options. Appetizers were very good, but the main entree left something to be desired. I liked the option for half portions on most all of the menu items, but for the price, the braised pork shoulder we received was the half that was just fat. I know pork shoulder is a fatty cut, and I like it because of that, but the entire portion should not be fat, in my opinion. Service was good, and the patio was nice. I would go back, but I'd try something other than the pork shoulder.

The receptionist was way too uptight. Not warm or welcoming. Our waitress was very nice and fun. Looking at our menus, we had two copies of one version, and three copies of another version. When we brought that up to the waitress, she didn't seem all that concerned. The brown wall color is horrid. I get that the theme is grain/earthy, but there are better ways. The cheese plate was great. I especially loved the truffle sea stack(sp?). The food took over an hour to arrive. When delivered, they got the tables mixed. My arugula salad was good. But my shrimp entree was nothing special. The sautéed greens were bare of flavor. Fried tomatoes was just okay. The sauce was simplistic. No much finesse.

This was our first visit to e&r and we were celebrating our anniversary to we were ready to splurge. The cocktails were delicious. Quite possibly the best manhattan ever, according to my husband. We had charcuterie to start. The server made excellent an excellent recommendation of the coppola. I ordered the pork shoulder and my his and had the pasta with mushrooms and snap peas. The portions were appropriate for single servings and everything was incredibly flavorful. I wish I could prepare a carrot the way they do at e&r! Anyway, all of the staff was very friendly, the outdoor seating was enjoyable and felt like we were somewhere special. I'm not sure how I feel about the prices and portions but it is high quality food.

While the service was friendly, the food was marginal. For that price point I expected more. Maybe some seasoning in the omlette? I also expected that when you are served bread products with breakfast (toast, etc.) you shouldn't have to ask for butter or jam. Weird. Also had to ask for a refil of the water jar. Again, they weren't really thinking about customer. This is my second time there and have had the same experience both times. Probably won't be going back.

Every dish had inventive flavor combinations that really worked. We went well out of our way to try this place while visiting from out of town, and it was worth the trip. The kids menu, though, shows none of the inspiration of the reast of the menu. The chef/management seem to have assumed that pint-sized diners aren't willing to eat fruits or vegetables. Most families who would appreciate the food at emmer & rye are probably serving their kids something a little more interesting than a hot dog.
