A word from Embeya
Embeya aims to creatively retool the ubiquitous Asian concept. Developing dishes based on a range of Asian ingredients, flavors and textures integrated with traditional French technique. Chef Thai will offer a progressive Asian menu in a casual, energetic space designed by 555 International, and will serve as a destination restaurant as well as a neighborhood hub.

Embeya takes its name from the Vietnamese word "em bé," which means "little one" and was Chef Thai's nickname growing up as the youngest of ten children. Drawing inspiration from both his Vietnamese upbringing and his travels across Asia, Chef Thai offers an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary takes on Asian cuisine.

Embeya, the partnership between hospitality veteran Attila Gyulai (former director of operations at the Elysian Hotel Chicago, Four Seasons) and up-and-coming executive chef Thai Dang (RIA, L2O, Zentan), is located at 564 W. Randolph in Chicago's West Loop.

  • "Enjoy an elegant eatery in the heart of the city with great and interesting food, wine and superb service. Each dish was not only tasty, but presented well, as each showcased the artistry and dedication to detail from the chef. The mussels were well seasoned, and sticky rice a great addition. The veal cheeks were tender and halibut moist and flavorful. The muscadet was an excellent pairing and other offerings from their long list of favorites won't disappoint. Bravo!"

  • "Great flavors mixing Vietnemese cuisine and French presentation, outstanding service, beautiful setting and delightful experience. My wife tried the papaya salad and I had the quail. Both delicious, teaming with flavor and fresh ingredients. We ordered pickled veggies and chinese broccoli. Yum! For our entrees my wife ordered the garlic chicken and I the whole fish, which was sole with a sweet garlic sauce. Unbelievable! Perhaps the best whole fish dish in Chicago! Roasted and then lightly fried to crisp the skin, the sole is both juicy, sweet and crispy and then the sauce is very tasty. My wife's chicken was equally well prepared fresh and delicious. We will be back and bring our friends and family!!"

The staff was very knowledgeable about the entrees and helped us make terrific selections: lamb tartar with crispy lotus root slices, grilled quail with fresh lime and salt, whole fried sole, scallops and noodles, young bamboo and sticky rice.   • "What a treat! My wife and I live not far from Embeya and had been meaning to try it for a while. Needless to say, we shouldn't have waited so long. The service was outstanding, the pork chop was the best I've ever had, and the cocktails featured unique twists. The only caution I'd suggest would be the people I noticed who ordered the whole fish were surprised when this massive monkfish came to their table...so ask how big it is before you order. Well done!"

We liked everything we had. The wine list is outstanding and well suited to the menu. The service was excellent. Both owners, husband and wife came to our table to wish my wife happy birthday. It exceeded our expectations, which was great!"

  • "I went here for dinner before a show at the Cadillac Palace Theater. My party tried the price fix meal and it was mostly wonderful. We loved the octopus, the green papaya salad was just ok. The garlic chicken was fantastic as was the short rib, the fried rice was underwhelming. The matcha cream puff for dessert was excellent. I would definitely come back here and will keep this restaurant in mind for work dinners as well."

  • "We went for a weekday lunch and ordered the price fixe lunch special. We tried different appetizer courses so we could share. We didn't know what to expect with the papaya salad (our waiter's recommendation) but it was absolutely wonderful. The vegetable rolls were tasty as well. We both ordered the seafood stew which was rich, fragrant, creamy yet slightly spicy, brimming with mussels, clams and other seafood. We finished with the tofu almond custard (which was very nice) and the creme puff (which was insanely delicious). For $22 apiece, we felt it was an excellent bargain. It's a convenient walk from the loop and has a very calm and relaxing decor. We are definitely going back!"

  • "We hadn't been to Embeya for over a year, but the waiter remembered us and helped us and our out-of-town guests to order just the right amount of food - this is important when dishes are served family style. The cuisine continues to be strikingly original and delicious and this time we had the opportunity to order wine by the bottle since it wasn't just the two of us, and I was struck by how the extensive list is tailored to the oriental food. There were some minor glitches - lobster in the shell is served without the necessary implements, and I had to ask for coffee twice - but the entire experience was more than satisfactory. Including the fact that there is a parking lot a half block away for $7."

  • "At first our server gave great suggestions on how to order off of the menu. They suggest you order apps & main course meals to share with everyone. We decided to order our own entrees & apps & share with anyone who wanted to try. When we ordered, our server seemed very irritated with us for not wanting to order a lot of appetizers & made a big deal about how some of us were not ordering apps. Once the couple appetizers came to those who ordered, we had plenty to share. After we placed our order, our server was pretty much non-existent. Two side dishes of rice that were ordered with the main entrees were forgotten & when we reminded him of this twice, he finally brought them (with no apology) after everyone was almost done eatting."

Super friendly, down-to-earth staff from the greeting at the front door to table service to coat check. The food is inventive, really well-prepared and beautifully presented. Chef Thai creates amazing scrumptious food that is decadent but not at all heavy, making Embeya perfect for lunch or dinner. The summer rolls, fried oysters and grilled Quail are some favorites of mine. Overlooked by many - Embeya's great cocktails and beautiful wine list. Summer patio - awesome! They do an outstanding job for large groups as well- I have thrown a killer party or two at their King's Tables! Love Love Love"

We shared all our dishes and were amazed on the complexity of the flavors. Most of the menu is gluten-free since they use rice flour so easy to choose and indulge! Go for the prawns and the quail for starters. The rib-eye and veal cheeks were fantastic - cooked perfectly and the spices were tantalizing."

Right off the bat, our waiter was rude - any questions regarding suggestions/explanation from the menu were met with a poor choice of words and an attitude. We went for lunch during Chef's week and while we were told by the waiter it would be an hour meal, it really lasted much longer, which is surprising considering lunch in the city. Overall, the food was tasty, but only if you have 1.5-2 hours to spend on lunch."

  • "From sitting down until we left, our waiter couldn't have been less interested to serve us. He was rarely around to take orders, and when he did, he continuously got them wrong. When you ask for something 3 times (and everyone at the table has heard your request) and it still isn't fulfilled, it's purposeful ignorance. The server was also very slow in delivering food, but the runners were attentive. The only time our server was fast and present was when he dropped off the check as we were finishing dessert and then hovered around until we tipped and signed the credit card receipts. The food itself was flavorful, but the service was such a turn-off that none of us plan on coming back anytime soon."

  • "This was my first visit to Embeya and I brought along two, out of town, guests. Being a vegetarian, myself, I knew there would not be much of a choice, on the menu, for me. My friends, however, raved about their dishes...and they are not easily pleased diners. We sat at the bar and had a cocktail, before dinner, which was a great experience, for all. They have a wonderful selection of scotch, not to mention their gin and tequila selections. I would definitely return, but maybe for just an appetizer and cocktail, not dinner. But. It because the food is not wonderful - because it is, so I'm told!"

  • "We had the prix fixe tasting menu, $29/person. It was a lot of food - a surprisingly good value for the money. The green papaya salad was refreshing and not overly sweet like so many others. The deep fried spring rolls were elevated from the norm by coming with butter lettuce to wrap the spring roll plus mint and Thai basil to brighten the flavor profile. The Brussels sprouts were tasty though a tad over salted, the same can be said for the noodles that accompanied the scallops. However, the scallops were cooked perfectly, perhaps the best I've had. The garlic chicken was juicy with crispy skin and while the dish was not too exciting the preparation was as good as it possibly could have been and had more flavor than anticipated."

  • "We dined early before a Hubbard St Dance performance. It began an amazing night out. Go early enough so you don't need to rush. Our dinner was prepared with care in taste and presentation. The brussel sprouts were so good but a little salty. Desserts are different from the usual and fun. We plan to go back soon."

My husband had the garlic chicken which takes 48 hours to make and was an amazing dish. I had the whole fish which was incredible. Flaky but juicy, deboned table side...it was awesome.
