Diner Reviews
  • "limited selection, menu different from one online, signficant use of coconut in sauces."

  • "Had a great business lunch at Embeya last week. Both my colleague and I thought our meals were great - very creative, good value in the prix fixe, and delicious. The papaya salad with or without the proposed beef jerky is refreshing and a large enough portion to share as a first course. I ordered the sea bass and my friend had the seafood stew. Both sauces were worthy of savoring with the generous helping of rice we were provided. Most importantly, it's worth saving room for the creme puff dessert filled with matcha (fine green tea) creme. This is really a dessert worthy of eatting and large enough to share. Sooo good! We sat outside this time, but the inside ambiance is elegant and a little private. Discrete."

  • "I have been trying to get to Embeya since they opened, and I have finally made it! Always ended up deciding not to go out for Asian, what a mistake. This place is phenomenal and it is surprising that they are not more popular. Cocktails were great. Food was great. Cant seem to say more other than I will be back as soon as I can. It is very satisfying to find a restaurant who can deliver amazing flavor and prep without the use of fats and salts like butter and bacon and other heavy meats and sauces. I had the duck to start and it was one of the most flavorful, but also lightest duck dish I have ever had. Usually leave after a great meal and I feel like I want to nap, but not here!"

  • "I've been here on at least 5 separate occasions and can't say enough about how enjoyable both the service and food is at Embeya. It was my colleagues first time dining here and they both enjoyed the cuisine and admire the fab décor of course."

  • "We loved the restaurant, sharing 5 starters and 4 entrees for our group of 5, and each dish was outstanding! The eggplant, scallops and halibut were the favorites of the table. The service was great as well."

  • "My husband, son and I dined for dinner. We heard great things about Embeya - and happened to be hanging out downtown and found an early reservation available. The food was amazing! Green papaya and the Crispy Duck appetizer were out of this world. Spring rolls were presented in a creative way and were delicious. For mains, we had the Mussels, Lobster and Rabbit. We tried two desserts, roasted peanut mousse and tropical jackfruit ice cream - my husband liked them but I thought they were just ok. We will be back, next time dressed for a night out and sans our 7 year old Mussel lover. Service was attentive, even given we had a kid with us and were dressed for a picnic instead of an early dinner out. Keep up the good work."

  • "Four of us went here back in January and I still am recommending it to my friends and planning a future visit. Each dish we had took distinct Asian street food elements, upscaled them and upflavored them. Marvelous meal and the ambiance is great!"

  • "The best meal I"ve had in years, an all around fabulous dining experience , I came with my family and my youngest son (19) said that was his favorite restaurant ever now how's that for a compliment"

  • "We love this place! This was our third time dining there. The whole fish entree is not to be missed. The green papaya appetizer is a must. Terrific mussels! Can't wait to go back again!"

  • "This is my favorite place to go currently in Chicago. The ambience is both eclectic and soothing. I love the location. The food is exceptional-great items and seasonings. Combination brings out the best in every selection. The service is first class-attentive, not intrusive. I feel that they care about my experience. And the owners? Lovely, wise, authentic stars sharing this earth and sky."

  • "The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was exceptional, although the portions were slightly small for the price. We would definitely return again."

  • "Business lunch, service was great, explanation of menu and recommendations were spot on. Rolls are deliciuos! Seafood stew was delightful and aromatic. Will be back for cocktail hour and lunch!"

  • "Food was testing and interesting. Space was nice. The host and hostess were excellent - so helpful and friendly. The waitstaff was more mediocre - very erratic, slow most of the time but very rushed when it suited them."

  • "Excellent creative food. Beautiful environment. Especially happy with how the tables are spaced. We could comfortably carry on a xonversation. Not common these days in many restaurants."

  • "What a terrific melange of flavors and textures. It made for a perfect birthday dinner spot for my friend. Terrific!"

  • "Recently took out of town friends here, after dining at Embeya some months ago. I had forgotten how excellent the food is, such unique combinations of flavors and textures. The service is spot-on also. The scallops and soba noodles and the eggplant with coconut were highlights on a menu with no flat notes. Definitely try one of their creative cocktails…the one with thai-chili infused tequila, rhubarb and lime was addictive! It's pricey and the bill can add up fast but definitely worth it for a unique and delicious dining experience."

  • "Service was excruciatingly slow ... Our water glasses were always full however. Drinks seemed watered down."

  • "We've eaten at Embeya three times. The food is interesting and excellent. Two of the three times, appetizers arrived before cocktails. Maybe they need a second bartender. Then there was too long a lag between appetizers and main courses. They are very apologetic and offer an extra course on them, but we don't want more food than we ordered. Wish their service matched up with their food."

  • "I have been to Embeya twice and both times have been outstanding. The food is amazing and the service is impeccable. Highly recommend!"

  • "Searched on line for a place to dine after a conference. The restuarant had very good reviews so I took a chance. It was excellent. Creative options."

  • "This was my second visit. Took a friend eager to experience top dining in Chicago. We both loved it. The aromas and tastes are delicious and seductive. Favorite "go-to" place in the city."

  • "Everything we ordered was delicious but the lamb tartare was a standout, as were the cocktails. We especially enjoyed the chili-infused tequila in the Queen's Ransom and the well-crafted old fashioneds. The market price whole fish was portioned tableside and was also excellent. However, we were very disappointed that there was obviously meat left on the fish and the server quickly wheeled his cart away as soon as he set the platter of fillets on our table. For a $55 dish, we expected to at least have been offered the rest of the fish so that we could enjoy every last bit of it. The price of the fish was a bit shocking, but we should have been prepared considering Embeya charges $12 for egg rolls."

  • "I went to Embeya with a group of 6 and agreed to let our server select our dishes (with some restrictions). He brought us a succession of tasty and interesting dishes - octopus, lobster, chicken, haddock - we all enjoyed the variety and flavors. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is adventurous "

  • "This restaurant exceeded expectations in basically every possible way. They tout their wine list as having the most extensive Riesling selection in the country, and I can confirm that this is probably a legitimate claim. The food and service were great as well. Our server was warm and friendly. He even brought us complimentary champagne as a desert because we were celebrating a college graduation. The food was creative and delicious. The highlight was the terbot special. The fish was cooked to the perfect temperature and had a crunchy exterior. The small plates were great as well. The quail dish was a flavor explosion. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to a friend. Great experience. "

  • "My friends and I really enjoyed the cusine at Embeya. The dishes were very unique and I tried some new things like the rabbit, which were very good. We all really enjoyed the cream puff and the surprise explosion that occurred when we broke it open!"

  • "I will rate this restaurant as a absolute gem. The entire dining experience was fabulous. The food was awesome.( They had their own Vegetarian menu!) and a the ambiance was lively. The service too, was top notch. Right from the very gracious hostess ( Komal ) to the servers, everyone was very professional yet friendly. Our review for food is based on the Vegetarian fare that we had. The Asparagus side was just divine, as was the Noodles entre. All in all it was a great experience."

  • "2nd time here - there were 3 of us (my birthday) and we had 3 appetizers, the whole fish and 3 deserts. I love the Lemon Grass tea and my desert was made from tofu and was wonderful. The service is excellent."

  • "Absolutely pitch-perfect in every way: from service to decor to food and wine. Menu is a foodie's delight. It all works together to produce a wonderful experience. Will definitely be back. "

  • "I have been here twice with larger groups (7 and 10 people) and each time had the tasting menu, which is a selection of their regular dishes -- chef's choice but taking into consideration the preferences of the guests. Each time it was a delightful experience. The service is attentive, the food excellent, and in a welcome change from most upscale restaurants in Chicago at the moment, the space is VERY conversation friendly. I expect to return soon, for all these reasons (especially the latter)."

  • "We visited Embeya for the first time to celebrate a 45th birthday. Our server, Jamaal, was attentive, informative, and respectful. His food suggestions were appropriate and he showed class by not pushing the most expensive selections. As for the dishes, the appetizers shined. The papaya salad is not to be missed. The mussels and prawns were also solid, but the octopus was a standout. We loved whole fish and the pork chop, but the chicken was a bit dry. The specialty drinks were tasty, refreshing, and potent. And, finally, the desserts were a nice departure from traditional chocolate concoctions and were a fitting finish to the meal. Overall, we had a great meal, we never felt rushed, and the service was spot on. We will be back."

  • "This restaurant uses Asian elements to enhance the dishes, not knock you over the head with them. The scaled-down menu allows the kitchen to focus on the quality and presentation of each dish, plus the opportunity to constantly tweak the menu. I had the pork chop which was cooked to perfection - nice char and incredibly juicy, presented in pre-sliced chuncks stacked with picked radish. Dessert had some intriguing elements - roasted pineapple with chili lime salt and coconut ice cream. The salt seriously enhanced the pineapple in an unexpected way."

  • "We were sat 55 minutes late, then when we were finally seated, our waiter said we needed to order now as the kitchen was closing. Food was incredibly salty and inedible. All around poor service experience. Most surprising was the general manager made no effort to remedy the situation or even apologize! There are too many wonderful restaurants in the city, so don't waste your time or money here."

  • "Restaurant was perfect for our evening. Happy pleasant staff. Attentive, but real. Didn't like facing the boring back wall on east side of restaurant. Add some antiqued mirror in a small band or something so guest can participate in the energy of the space. If you face the wall for over an hour it gets rather dull. Food was quite wonderful."
