  • "I generally am suspicious of chefs that have a lot of ingredients in each dish. When they have to be explained I find that the chef has gotten too full of him/herself and has gone over the edge. Not true at Elm. The dishes are complex but you can identify the ingredients. They all complement each other. This is made all the better because the menu changes by season or what is available. I had the chef's tasting menu the other night and each course was different and interesting. Definitely was not left starving. Service is great - attentive but not all over you."

  • "Fit for Foodies is a definite. I haven't seen/tasted such an imaginative chef in a long time (and we just recently moved out of NYC). The restaurant's atmosphere is sleek but warm - in a word - sexy. Wonderful service too."

  • "We've been to Elm several times and we enjoy each visit more and more. Food is excellent, as is the service. A bit pricey, but worth it, especially for a special occasion."

  • "All the food at Elm was impeccably plated and deliciously executed. Starting with the crudo of sea scallop, urchin and trout roe (a visual stunner), to the pork belly (a must!!!) to the kussi raw oysters that exploded with a sea water creaminess and the beets with goat cheese (top 5 beet experiences). I had the elm burger served on a beautiful wood platter made from a tree section, the burger was addictive. I was so satiated from the appetizers that I had little room to finish but couldn't stop because the burger was so delicious. Even the chef came out to make sure all was OK (especially the new addition of the pork belly) and it was more than OK! Will be back again!"

  • "We enjoyed our food at elm. However after a change in our party size I asked the restaurant NOT to mention my husbands birthday as originally requested. They said they understood and then at the end if dinner still came out with a big dessert with flaming candle and happy birthday message. It was also difficult to get the bartender's attention because the entire staff was so busy watching a movie on the screen that is oddly set up at the end of the bar. They also have some cool old cocktail books out on the bar and so I picked one from there, but then the bartender proceeded to act confused and ask me if the drink required a blender "um, your book!" Then he realized he couldn't make it. I did end up enjoying the farmers daughter cocktail."

  • "Went there for our anniversary and the food was as special as the event. My wife and I had different items from the menu, did some sharing and enjoyed the other's selection as much as our own. We are already anticipating our next meal at the Elms."

  • "Lunch was not as good as I had expected. The Harvest Salad was missing many of the elements our waitress said were going to be included. I had heard the Elm was going to be exceptional, and I was disappointed."

  • "Quiet for a Tuesday night, but service and food were spot on and delicious. We started with the beets which were very fresh and served with a delicious soft goat cheese, followed by the frito misto which was an assortment of veggies lightly fried in a tempura batter not greasy at all...crisp and fresh! Homemade parkerhouse type rolls were then delivered and were too tempting to let sit, soft, moist and incredibly satisfying. We also ordered the tuna which was thinly sliced and wrapped around avocado again a big hit with everyone. The in-house homemade pasta with lobster put us all over the top we loved it, slightly garlicky but worth it! Sadly we were too full for dessert...looking forward to the next time!"

  • "Chef Brian Lewis and his team brings a great food and dining to the area. This a great alternative to NYC, same quality of food with high energy. I must for anyone who enjoys freshly source ingredients transformed onto a beautiful plate of food."

  • "Unfortunately the high volume of music made it very difficult for some members of our party to participate in the conversation. We enjoyed the food except for the cake that was served as bread! It was a Friday night but the service was rather slow"

  • "Extraordinary food; beautifully creative presentation; exquisite flavor combinations and accents. One of the all-around greatest culinary experiences we have had in quite a while. All complemented by attentive, friendly (but totally unobtrusive) service that was completely informed and familiar with every detail of the food and preparation. We've eaten here 3-4 times over the past two years and this terrific restaurant just seems to get better and better."

  • "We've eaten here 3-4 times for Sunday brunch and been pleased with the food. Three of us came for dinner. The specialty cocktails were good, not great. I make better deviled eggs, though the presentation was nice. We were all excited for the heirloom tomato salad at this time of year, but it was under-seasoned and nothing special. The burger was good, as was the English pea sachetti. The one real highlight was the spring vegetable risotto--perfect in every way. We passed on dessert. We sat in a booth on the bar side, because there was a special event on the dining room side which was noisy, but we could hold a conversation. Would come back for brunch, probably not dinner."

  • "The rumors are that the "scene" is too vibrant, but I did not find that true, and the food was very well prepared and a very nice offering of styles. Every tasty bite was scrumptious."

  • "A wonderful dining experience in New Canaan. My husband and I often have date night here as the food is delectable and the atmosphere is romantic. The wait staff is superior and the chef has a passion for creating a variety of dishes that combining fresh vegetables with superior meats and fish entrees!"

  • "Food well prepared and tasty, but in very small portions. I ordered a Tenderloin steak Medium Rare, it came to me as blood rare. I sent it back and they brought out another, and it might have been still moving."

  • "My wife and I tried Elm for her birthday dinner and were thrilled with the experience. The host, Max, was fantastic - sat us down, made small talk and when he heard it was our first time there he immediately brought us two complimentary glasses of champagne and a couple of oysters. Both were delicious. Our waiter was also great - very personable, helpful, attentive. We had the beet salad, the english pea sachetti, and the roast chicken - all were fantastic. Portions were perfect - not too much or too little. We'll definitely be back."

  • "This is a great addition to the CT dining scene. The restaurant is sleek and modern and the food is fresh and fit for foodies. The staff is also pretty sophisticated. This place could hold it's own in NYC - very good!!"

  • "We went for Father's Day and were seated immediately. They gave us a nice booth for myself, my husband 7 yr old and infant. We waited a long time for a server to speak to us. Finally, the hostess noticed and asked if we'd like water. They brought that 5 minutes later, but it took another 10 for anyone to come take our drink order. 1 cappuccino, 1 coffee and 1 pineapple juice took 15 minutes (it took another 5-10 minutes at the end of the meal after my husband asked for a refill on his coffee). The food came out swiftly and was warm, but the eggs on our eggs benedict were so runny that my husband thought they had just used the yolk - although perhaps that was the intention? Food good, but not overly spectacular."

  • "This restaurant is a gem in New Canaan which serves excellent food in a sleek modern setting. The dishes are creative and delicious."
    Dined on 6/1/2014
  • "Food was good, but a little bit (even for New Canaan) overpriced. The wine was way overpriced - glass of current vintage rose = 50% of retail bottle price! Service - depending on which staff served you - was good, or not."

  • "While the food at Elm might be the best in Fairfield County, the front of house needs plenty of work. Our server seemed very confused and really couldn't explain the dishes on the menu. Service is way to rushed"

  • "We heard this restaurant was great, so we booked it for our anniversary. What happened? Was the chef on vacation? One of our pasta dishes was so bland, we should have sent it back. The beef brisket was inedible and we did send it back! It was nice of them to offer us another dish, but at that point my appetite was spoiled. We've had great brunches at Elm. But we won't be returning for dinner. What a disappointing evening!"

  • "Been here many times and food was off. Just too rich this time around. Looked like a new sous chef, don't know if yet hat is reason. Service continues to be odd - very nice at beginning of meal but they always seem to get caught up in other stuff when it gets busy. Often here waitstaff bickering about who is covering what. "

  • "MY HUSBAND AND I HAD DINNER HERE WITH TWO FRIENDS ON SATURDAY NIGHT. WE COULD ONLY GET A TABLE AT 6PM SO I WAS A LITTLE WORRIED THAT WE WOULD BE RUSHED OUT FOR THE NEXT SITTING. OUR WAITER WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AND FUN, FIRST ADVISING ABOUT THE COCKTAILS AND THEN ABOUT THE FOOD ITSELF. WE DECIDED NOT TO HAVE APPETIZERS BUT, AFTER A DELICIOUS TASTER,THE CHEF APPEARED WITH THE MOST DEVINE EGGS FOR US ALL.THEY WERE SUPERB AND THE PRESENTATION IN A CARDBOARD EGG CARTON WAS PERFECT. OUR ENTREES WERE DELICIOUS TOO. WE WERE NOT IN THE LEAST RUSHED AND WE ALL LEFT SAYING IT WAS A FANTASTIC MEAL AND WE WOULD DEFINITELY RETURN."

  • "My fiancee and I went to Elm for dinner and ordered the tasting menu. The portions were small, the waiters too soft spoken where half the time I had no idea what I was eating, and the food did not always make sense. The pasta dish was too small and some plates, like the Halibut, were so busy I couldn't make sense of what was going on and the flavors didn't seem to work together at all. The brisket was great, but the spicy cabbage that came with it overpowered the dish. The biggest issue we had was that we left hungry and for the price we paid with tip, it was not worth it. I've had fewer dishes at Per Se's Salon (their tasting portions) and left fuller and able to justify a check identical to Elm's. This place left me confused and annoyed."

  • "We really enjoyed the food in Elm restaurant. It's a high end meals in the casual settings. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. The only concern was that it took the kitchen very long time for our dishes to come out…. Hopefully next time it won't happen, as we are looking forward to return again."

  • "Great meal all around - the confit of cod dish is a must have, it is absolutely incredible. The dining experience was better than the last time I went to Elm. Only issue was that the time between our appetizers and entrees was very long - I think it was at least 20 minutes."

  • "I found Elm because they were on a list of restaurants to which Millstone Farm supplies its free-range chicken eggs. So, I thought Elm would be more conscious of nutritious foods. From what I observed, however, Elm has the same old white flour and sugar you can find anywhere else. On another note, the acoustics were horrible. I had a hard time hearing my family across the table from me. Get some carpet or tapestries, or something to cut the reverberation. Our waitress was great. She was very attentive and discerned that we were in a hurry, so she sped us through getting the bill paid."

  • "Three of us had Sunday brunch. My Jonah Crab Benedict was very good, though the hollandaise lacked much lemon punch. My wife's omelette (mushroom and goat cheese) didn't have much goat cheese flavor and my daughter's short rib hash was greasy and much more potato than short rib. Breads were so-so and the sweet spread that accompanied them though apparently homemade had so little flavor, none of us could figure out what it was, Service was very slow and there were too many uncoordinated servers. Had to ask for salt & pepper and for sugar for coffee. We wanted to like the restaurant, as a good brunch is not easy to find in our area, but overall it was a disheartening experience."
