Diner Reviews
  • "each of us thought our meal very good quality, very fresh ingredients, beautiful presentation. A little too pricey, so we won't frequent as often as we would if less expensive."

  • "Our server was fantastic and the food was mostly excellent. Only caveat is that I am on a low sodium diet and generally have found that fine restaurants (similar to Ella's) can accommodate my needs. I selected a few entrees from the menu and asked the server to check with the chef to determine which would have the least sodium. To my surprise, the chef responded that he/she salts all meats and fish when they first arrive at the restaurant, so I had virtually no choices for a protein with little salt. My meal of tuna, which was recommended as the least salty option, was disappointing (and fairly salty). My companions thoroughly enjoyed their meals (wiith no dietary restrictions)."

  • "Ella's is our favorite restaurant on the main line. Consistent in both food and beverage. Exceeds expectations!"

  • "Have enjoyed Ella's many times over the years but find it even better now with the installation of a new chef. Food which was always good has been taken to a new level."

  • "It's expensive and for the price the food, the service, and the ambiance were not satisfactory. The salads were good as were the drinks, but from then on it was disappointing."

  • "Very good service. appetizer (shrimp filled crusted spinach or something like that!) was excellent. Entres were pretty good, but overall, not a lot of food. Good drink menu."

  • "Ella's has been excellent each of the 3 times I've been there. It's amazing it's tucked into a strip mall in Devon, PA! The food, esp. the sauces & presentations, is outstanding & unique, the service has been consistently good-to- excellent, & my family & friends haves loved it each time I've gone - a real winner. It's a touch pricey, but worth it!"

  • "Everyone was great! Bartenders were friendly and answered all of our questions. Service was above and beyond. Can not wait to go back.. A real must try."

  • "Have had multiple visits to this restaurant--it is consistently enjoyable. Great servers."

  • "Ella's is our favorite restaurant on the Main Line and we are never disappointed. As usual, great food and service in a lovely atmosphere. We will return again soon!"

  • "We ate at Ella's on a steamy, stormy, summer night. The lighting and ambience were so warm and elegant. Our server was very attentive. Water and bread service was frequent. Food was pretty good. The Monkfish was a little dry and the dish itself was a little salty for our taste buds. Only complaint was no sugar on the rim with a lemon drop martini. That's a must,"

  • "The service was attentive and friendly from the greeting until the finish. Our dinners were creative and delicious. My Trout Amandine was perfectly prepared presented. We voted unanimously that we would return soon. On another note, we were able to hear one another easily in an eye-pleasing room."

  • "We love Ella's. The menu is not too extensive which tells me that the chef is not trying to stretch himself too than. Rather, he wants to focus on offering a menu which appeals to most diners. I think this is very wise and it has paid off well for him and the restaurant. The bartenders are personable, professional and have great senses of humor. Tim made me a special strawberry and basil cocktail which was delicious. For dinner, I had the steak which was SO good, and since I NEVER order steak because I have been disappointed, I thought I would try it. Perfectly cooked. My husband and our friend had a burger which looked delectable. My other friend had the spinach crepes which she enjoyed. Great spot. Keep up the good work."

  • "Not certain where to begin, so I'll start at the beginning. A real bar, with a GROWN up bartender who knows how to make things like a Makers Mark Old Fashioned (perfectly), wonderful host, and professional wait service that was serving a great new menu executed flawlessly from the kitchen. We sampled from across both sides of the menu - highlights included the short rib, the gnocchi, the trout and the soup of the day, a cold crisp cauliflower soup. Fantastic imagination in both presentation and flavor. Our wait team was mature, and on point providing the proper amount of attention and measured privacy. The restaurant decor has the charm of dining at a friends house, the new menu with farm to table choices making it even more so."

  • "We have been going to Ella's for some time. Food is consistently good, and well prepared. Service can be a bit slow when they get busy. Desserts are not quite up to the quality of the rest of the menu. Wine list has a good range of excellent wines at reasonable restaurant prices."

  • "Another fantastic night at Ella's. We arrived to a smiling and warm hostess that was very welcoming and seated us promptly. Our server was friendly and knowledgable. The manager helped with our wine selection offering us tastes before we committed to a full glass. Food was best of all. Thank you again!"

  • "We went to Ella's on a Friday night. Restaurant was empty. I ordered the tuna and to say it was unappetizing is an understatement. Fish was grey and tough and was just plain gross. Everyone's food was just "ok" - totally not worth the price. "

  • "Have been to Ella's before several times, and the food is always great. It was too bad this time the female bartender could not hold her feelings back towards the other co-workers with whom she was having issues, as it may have been more than just one..... Also too bad for management for allowing this discussion to happen at the sevice bar, not before or after service."

  • "After reading many glowing reviews about this restaurant in our local magazine I had high expectations about this supposed "farm to table." My mussels appetizer was very disappointing with several mussels tasting bad (definitely not fresh!) The arugula and beet salad was well prepared but the rest of our food was bland or drowning in butter. Virtually everyone's dinners were just mediocre. We will not be return as there are many other restaurants with better food for similar prices. "

  • "Three of us went for dinner. We requested that Daniel choose our drinks. One of us had a rum drink, an absinthe drink and a beer. We were very pleased with the size/strength of the drinks, the ingredients that went into them were perfect. Really original . For appetizers we had foie gras, prawns, spinach salad and scallops. All of them so delicious. For our main courses we had the ribeye special, gnocchi and duck. Very flavorful and cooked to perfection. For desserts pot de creme-smooth and creamy-chocolate gateau, peanut butter, caramel, need I say more? I had the lemon tart-lemony and perfect-and the lemon verbena ice cream. Uh! The absolute best I've ever had. Everyone around us raved about the food. It really was that good."

  • "We celebrated my daughter's graduation from Villanova at Ella's and it was the perfect ending to a perfect day. The serve was fantastic and the food just as fantastic. "

  • "Great Chicken Salad sandwhich, great atmosphere, good service, look forward to going back, would go there for any meal and any time. Enjoyed it!!!!"

  • "Had known of Ella's location for sometime, but this was the first visit. For some reason (strip mall location?) had assumed that it was one of many breakfast/lunch "diners" in the area. However, after reading reviews we took our Villanova-graduating niece out for a "last" meal. And, in a word, wonderful! After a dubious start with an over-priced, over-seasoned prawn appetizer, the rest of the meal was delicious. The pork-shoulder gets particularly high marks. Will be going again."

  • "Hostess was a bit off her game (failed to notify our server of our arrival) but our server was on the All spot and entertaining without being overbearing All in all a decent place despite its location in a strip mall."

  • "Ella's has been around for some time now but we had never tried it until Saturday night and we realized what a delightful experience we'd been missing. We were greeted warmly and the service was attentive but discrete. The best part was the food itself. From spinach and goat cheese crepes to short ribs, all four of us, enjoyed every bite. Try the charcuterie board with a drink for a shared before-dinner treat. We look forward to our next visit to Ella's. Our thanks to the Chadwick brothers and the entire staff!"

  • "I have been here twice in the past month for dinner. The host and hostess are welcoming and last time we were seated in a quiet back room which eventually had several tables filled but was perfect for quiet conversation. Excellent meal with attention from the wait staff and manager. Very reasonable and the best Riesling I've had in a long time. "

  • "Popped in for a business dinner last week. There is a new chef and a very different and new menu. Highlights include the heirloom roasted beet salad, the seasoned skate and the ahi tuna. The thoughtful wine list continues, and they continue to land new mature wait staff that understand the nuances of fine dining."

  • "6:30 reservation, restaurant lovely. I had two appetizers which were only fair....beet salad and salmon (lox). Presentation fair. I would probably not go back."

  • "I'm pretty sure that Ella's served us the best ribeye we have ever eaten, and my husband and I are food snobs!! Everything was wonderful...from the appetizers to the wine to the dessert. Our waiter was knowledgeable and nice to talk with. My parents had recommended this restaurant months ago because they loved it, and I'm sorry we waited so long to eat there! We will be back!"

  • "Last Saturday, I had lunch with my son and that evening had dinner with my wife and siste-rin-law...both at Ella's! As always, the food is wonderful. My special find was their own signature Manhattan. Uniquely blended. Never had a better one. My duck breast was done to perfection. Soup, salads and other entres were wonderful. We're glad we live so close!"

  • "The bar is lovely and interior is very nice. Would love to bring guests or go with a friend, but dinner was pricey and food was just good - nothing too memorable, though certainly not bad."

  • "We really enjoyed our dining experience at Ella's Bistro. The décor is upscale and classy - glad we had made an Open Table reservation as the place was full. Servers were efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. Our meals (Hanger Steak for hubby and Duck for me) were perfectly prepared. Nice fresh & flavorful bread. We shared the Charcuterie which had a nice assortment but I would opt for something different next time - and there WILL be a next time. My only wish would be a wine list with a few more affordable options as most choices (Cabs & Merlot Bottles) started in the $50 range. There should be some serviceable wines in the $35 range added. Please.... "

  • "Wow...this restaurant has really found itself. We ate off the bar menu and were blown away by the poutine. The short rib sandwich and the foie gras torchon were awesome. It's nice to see this place come into its own. Great service at the bar. Will be back!"

  • "If it weren't for Groupon would have never know Ella's existed. We had good wine, great services and good food."
    Dined on 4/21/2014
  • "we went to Ella's on a Thursday evening for dinner and there were initially only a few other guests in the place. the service was very good / attentive, the food was very good, but the overall menu selections could have been more interesting and more choices provided, wines by the glass seemed steep and entrees were 25-30 generally. We like the place and would return to try the patio in the summer, but we would also want to check to see the bar menu and if the pricing was more moderate. "

  • "My only comment is that it was a bit pricey. For two people, my bill came to $89.??. With tip, it was well over $100.00 so I think I would not be coming to your restaurant very often. I know it is what one orders but for me, it was a bit too expensive to make your restaurant a regular thing. Eve Webb "
