Diner Reviews
  • "From the outside (located in a strip mall) I didn't expect much. BUT, the interior is really elegant. Warm welcome from the host, great service. Best of all is that the food was absolutely wonderful, the best I've had on the Main Line in several decades in fact. We had the giant prawns and the appetizer with scallops and pea purée... sumptuous. Main courses were lamb chops and roast pork shoulder, again superb. Dessert was an over the top pear bread pudding. Wine prices were almost reasonable ($58 for a Gamay). This is not an expensive experience, but considering the wonderful kitchen, top notch service, and the reality that we could actually converse because of a low noise level, made for a perfect evening."

  • "You may know that Ella's has a new chef. We were a bit concerned - we thought the food was excellent under the previous chefs. However, we needn't have worried. I ordered the loin lamb chops - Colorado lamb, tasty and well prepared, with artichoke, potatoes and mint oil. My wife had the pork shoulder - exceedingly tender, with a definite natural pork taste. Not North Carolina barbecue, but, after all, this is a French/American restaurant. Minor quibble - it would be nice to have more appetizers that are neither fish nor liver based. Wine list is very good, with excellent wines by the glass, and reasonable prices. Service was excellent. We were in a side room that was quiet. Main dining room adjoins the bar - can be noisy."

  • "Salads were good as were lemon tart and bread pudding. Gnocchi appetizer was scanty and incredibly overpriced. Mains (trout, pork shoulder and hanger steak) were adequate but unimpressive. Maybe I would rate it a better experience if the staff had been more welcoming rather than blah. Waiter would interrupt to get order without even hovering a moment to be noticed and waiting for the sentence being spoken among us to end. Bread lady never appeared after first small slice. All in all a pricy and and unspectacular evening..."

  • "I have eaten lunch at Ella's almost monthly since it opened and have had dinner there maybe 5-6 times. The ambience and clientele are refined and, while clearly acceptable, I found the service and food good but not memorable. Recently, the food and now the service have improved and are approaching truly memorable. Congratulations to the owners, chef and staff for committing to take Ella's to the next level. I'm looking forward to more frequent memorable meals."

  • "My husband had the short ribs and was in love. My husband's appetizer was delicious scallops (2) I had 2 appetizers for dinner: grilled romaine with shrimp and beet salad, both of which were tasty and well sized. We didn't have any dessert. We had a reservation for 8 but weren't seated until 8:20. We had drinks at the bar which was fine, but I found the wait odd and wonder about their booking practices. Our waiter was pleasant but not conversant about the menu. I still think the food and ambiance is worth a return."

  • "You might not notice it driving by but inside it's a large establishment. At 7:30 on a Friday night was hoping. They had a nice selection of craft beers on tap and happy hour drink specials on wine and featured drinks. We went to the dinning room which is a nice open room. Roasted beet salad with goat cheese which was very flavorful and nicely presented. My date the goat cheese crepes. They must have been good because that was what she had the first time she went. I had the tuna which was ordered medium rare. It was a nice piece of fish although I think cooked a little past medium rare. We ordered roasted califlower as a side which was outstanding. They don't post prices for beer so be careful of sticker shock when you get the check."

  • "My husband and I went on a Sunday evening. No problem getting a table, however, when we arrived, decided to sit at the bar. Excellent bartender; very attentive. I had the pork shoulder with apples and sweet potatoes. Outstanding. Will continue to dine there and recommend to friends."

  • "A lovely spot day or night. But mostly we just love the unusual and truly delicious offerings. My squash soup last Saturday was so good I had great difficulty resisting the temptation to ask for seconds. But the rest of the meal was wonderful too, so I felt better about not having more soup. Lemon tart for dessert made me glad that I'd passed on the available ice cream flavors (malt something or other, and another previously unheard of alternative)."

  • "honestly you won't find a better place to dine. very relaxing, service good, got a new chef, new manager, all good. the bar is a fun relaxing atmosphere, where you can eat or make reservation for fine dining. I highly suggest this restaurant. I have taken small group and large group, all very accommodating!!!"

  • "This was our first visit. Pleasantly surprised to see table cloths in the dining area. Small room, but the tables were not really on top of each other, so we could have a pleasant conversation with our friends. Food overall was delicious. Our only complaint was the sauce for the trout was a little too salty for our taste. Good-sized portions and presented well. They definitely do not rush you through dinner and our waiter was excellent."

  • "Friendly greeting, good food, good service, racetrack decor, all a plus. But the teeth-rattling noise level is a minus. We asked for a quiet table and they tried, near the open kitchen, but it was still loud. Waiter was fine until he offered a plate with two cookies at the end for THREE people. When we pointed out the arithmetic, he came back with six more cookies."

  • "This restaurant fills a niche that's needed in Wayne PA. There are too many pubs, and not enough nice restaurants. The food, service and ambience is very nice and they have great attention to detail"

  • "3 items ordered. Croque Madame, Tarragon Chicken Salad, & Caesar Salad w/shrimp. Tarragon and Caesar was great however the Croque Madame was a big disappointment"

  • "Lunch was good. The chicken liver moose with Brandy soaked cherries was a yummy and a generous portion. My short rib sandwich was messy and the short ribs were a bit chewy. . I will definitely go back."

  • "Food and service were very good. Pricing was reasonable. Disappointed that they served milk with coffee instead of cream. A top restaurant should always have cream."

  • "We had the hanger steaks with frites and caesar salads. Both dishes were amazing! The steaks were cooked and marinated perfectly and the frites were crispy and tasty too. We ended our meal with an irish coffee which was superb! Thanks for a great evening Ella's!"

  • "Wonderful surprise! Chicken liver mousse was awesome. The duck and short ribs were the stars though. Our server was friendly and comfortable answering any questions we Had on the menu. We also had an awesome Tempranillo that they offer by the glass."

  • "Food was outstanding. Service was outstanding. Dessert was more than outstanding. We were not in the main dining room, but a little room off of it with only tables for two (would hold about 10 diners)....excellent atmosphere and ambience. Would highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "We enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant and the knowledge of our server. Pleased with the crepes and side brussel sprouts. Exceptional homemade coffee ice cream and blueberry sorbet."

  • "They changed the menu and we found it very limiting. Not sure we would go back. Used to love the menu. Had to revert to the bar menu."

  • "Food was just ok - nothing outstanding. Service was quite poor - waiter in training but nobody was following him. Had to ask for refills on drinks. Service was slow."

  • "We were skeptical upon pulling up to Ella's since it is situated in a strip mall. When we entered, we were greeted pleasantly and seated almost immediately. The wait staff was professional and courteous. The atmosphere was quite elegant and tastefully decorated. Food was good, not spectacular. I had the hanger steak, which was a bit fatty. It came with delicious, perfectly crisped potato fries - a bit oversalted. Lemon tart for dessert had a very tough pastry shell, but the flavor was good."

  • "Disappointed in the menu selection and found it over priced. Although we were sitting across the room we had direct view of kitchen and could overhear the kitchen staff. Our waiter was very accommodating."

  • "We have had great meals at Ella's but last night no one and nothing were at their best. Service was extremely slow, food was bland and wine was a disaster."

  • "The restaurant is beautiful but the food and the service were to be desired."

  • "Second time at this restaurant and it was disappointing. We had reservations for 8pm, we arrived about 10 mins late but were seated promptly in a separate room off of the main dining room. It was quiet which we were happy about because we walked thru the main room and it was very noisy. Tthis room was very cold and we could feel the air blowing right on us, the fan would stop it was very comfortable so it was cold off and on. The waiter, Mario was perfect, but wait time between appetizer & entrée was a 1/2 hour, we didn't start to eat our entrée until 9:45. Mario apologized for the wait, however we would have liked to have been told that it would be delayed and had the option to cancel our order."

  • "Loved it. They have a few things on the menu described rather pretentiously , but do them just right. The steak was cooked to perfection, the pork shoulders were succulent. The tuna steak and trout were great! Everyone on the table was ecstatic with their entree... Its pricy. But totally worth it for the quality. We had a living social so it worked out great! Will be going back again for sure! Oh the cocktails were good and wine list quite comprehensive."

  • "This was my first time at Ella's. It was warm, elegant & friendly. Lunch choices were limited though very good. Had PEI mussels with leeks as my entree. It was listed as appetizer though plenty for a meal -- ask for extra bread -- the broth is delicious! My friend had a spinach salad with lump crab (her plate was spotless when she finished) The atmosphere was understated, not crowded. Service was excellent (our server had only been there for a few weeks; he also mentioned the chef was new) I will come back for dinner soon."

  • "We came here on a Groupon and will definitely return. Such a great addition to Main Line dining. The food was delicious! The caesar salad was the best I've had in a long time with a nice hint of anchovies. I had the duck breast which was tender and delicious, my husband had the tuna, also delicious. For dessert we shared the espresso pot du creme. Yum! I can't say enough good things about this restaurant."

  • "We had a lovely evening. But, I must say that the food was particularly rich for both me and my husband. I would ask for sauces on the side in the future. The atmosphere was wonderful and the staff were very attentive."

  • "Consistently great food, fairly priced, in a lovely setting. Don't miss it. This review is based on ten visits."

  • "too much salt...the smoked salmon was not really smoked salmon since it was waaaaaay too salty and cut too thick. The 3 scallops appetizer for $10. was also quite salty. The entree of trout was salty and swimming in oil, the hanger steak was good but the sauce was salty.. The creme brulee was excellent, and its creamy taste was a wee bit of antidote to the salt of the meal. came home and drank water by the bucketful or so it seemed. second time to the restaurant and this was only slightly better than the first . NEVER AGAIN."

  • "Cocktails are generous pours - they way they should be! The food is still good but different, a new menu with a few hold-overs. The beet salad, a popular favorite, needed no changes though still a vey nice salad, it now includes supremes of grapefruit or orange and other changes I can't quite identify. Tuna with white beans was nicely cooked with just the right band of warm pink inside. Portion was large, I brought some home. My husband had duck breast and raved about it. Rustic chocolate cake hit all the buttons - creamy, crunchy and peanut buttery!"

  • "Food was very poor quality. The chicken salad tasted like tuna fish and the roll was stale. I definitely won't be back."

  • "Tried this restaurant because it was featured in our Birthday Pack. Went for lunch on a Saturday. The decor and design was nice and classy. There was a bar that seems like it would be a neat place to hang out during happy hour etc. The service was what you would expect. There were not that many people there because it was lunch time and it had just snowed. We ordered an arugula beet salad which was fantastic, smoked salmon platter (quite salty but ok when you paired with the bread cracker and capers), and the ella burger. The burger was amazing topped with bacon and cheese. This is what a gourmet burger is all about. Definitely worth visiting."

  • "It is still strange to find fine dining in a strip mall but here is another example. Ella's is doing a good job with interesting combinations and seasonal offerings. The salads are always excellent. Having said that, they are still working on consistency - silverware and plates are replaced promptly, but they may forget to offer you the delicious little cheddar biscuits. The steak frites may be phenomenal tonight and tough and chewy next week. I have had meals, like the trout, of surprising delicacy, and then the risotto will be like paste. We like this restaurant very much and will be there again soon. I think though if they want to move up the "food chain" they need to work on a consistent product, there are flashes of brilliance there."
