Diner Reviews
  • "Great food and drinks, seemed a little pricey but it was good food -- love that it's all local. We are not into art so the gallery did not interest us, but there is an art gallery to enjoy while waiting for your food."

  • "The lunch choices were beautifully plated. The Eat Local mantra is so very evident. How charming to find yourself sitting on the outdoor patio with a flourishing garden at your side. We enjoyed our conversation with the "ice cream chef." His "indulgences " alone will certainly initiate a timely return."

  • "The grilled salmon brochette was tender and delicious. There was an excellent selection of ice cream for dessert. For the outdoor dining, there was live music that was wonderful. The staff was not particularly hospitable which is the reason for my lower rating in service and ambience."

  • "Festive atmosphere, low key with good food and wine. Planning another visit soon."

  • "Good food however my Wahoo (fish) was so dry it was hard to swallow."

  • "We LOVE Ella! We always have fun and always great food and drinks! This time, we had the wahoo (Hawaiian fish) and the asparagus tart. Ella also has wonderful vegetarian selections. We also enjoy the bar very much--welcoming bartenders, excellent drinks and excellent bar menu!"

  • "Very good restaurant that keeps getting better. We shared olive and biscuit appetizers and had four different entrees: steak, salmon, cheese brochettes, and asparagus tart. Each well prepared and delicious. We split an outstanding and unique carrot cake as dessert. Service was very good, despite server handling table of 12 at same time."

  • "The crab cakes were a special the night we dined at Ella and they were marvelous; having dined on crab cakes near Annapolis, Maryland for 20 years this is no small endorsement. They were as good if not better than the crab cakes I have feasted on for years. The sides were inventive and delicious. If this is any indication of quality everything else is worth a try. We will be back. And the wine list was very good...Cakebread Chardonnay, yum!"

  • "Service was excellent friendly and attentive. I enjoyed the food, however, we had fried zucchini the batter was extremely greasy and the zucchini Soggy. "

  • "The food was good and service was excellent. Not over the top dining for the price thiugh. Will go again but not on our regular list. "

  • "We had a fantastic dinner at Ella. The asparagus tart was the best vegetarian entree I have ever had. Everyone in our group enjoyed going there."

  • "We have been to Ella several times and it has to be said they are inconsistent with service. This time, except that we had a coupon, that we laid out on the table from the start, and the waitress rung up the bill without it and had to do it over again, the service was above average. The food is good; we had prime rib and chicken. It is always VERY NOISY. Art gallery next door is a nice touch."

  • "My wife and I and two other couples enjoyed a wonderful evening. Even with a party of six, we were seated at exactly the time of our reservation in a booth. Our server, Chris, was friendly, helpful, and very knowledgable about all segments of the menu - wine, meals, everything. The food was incredible and the atmosphere was great. Thank you, Ella for a great evening with friends. P.S. I know it's almost spring, but please keep the Autumn Risotto on the menu - it's out of this world!"

  • "This gem in New Albany is great. I live a little north of New Albany and like good restaurants and don't mind driving to Short North, but it's nice to have an option of a restaurant with just a high caliber up north. Delicious menu and friendly staff. Recommend."

  • "Great food. Service was slow. We had a party of 8. There were only 10 other people in the restaurant but our waitress was difficult to find."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "Very good food - lots of unique choices. We went kinda basic - the Burger was excellent, including their home-made BBQ chips. And while the kiddies would like the Mac-n-Cheese, it's a great adult meal too - very rich and tasty - we got the pulled pork add-on - great choice! And the Chocotini was a delightful start. We were first-timers- and we'll be back!"

  • "Love this place! Have been visiting since its opening 2 years ago. Chef Hyde's menu is creative and the food and service are consistenly excellent. Also, really like that most everything used including some of the alcohol is from Ohio, which showcases the excellent extent of the high quality products available in this rich agricultural state. New Albany is very lucky to have this little gem."

  • "We had an excellent meal here. I currently am unable to use my right foot due to surgery and have to use a little scooter. The restaurant staff was more than accommodating making sure I got in and was seated comfortably. The food and service were both excellent. I highly recommend the mussels. I love mussels and I am very picky about them. The sauce was incredible and mussels were fresh. We will definitely return.."

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful Valentine's dinner. Food was excellent and the service was awesome. The menu had wine pairings for all items, and we went with the suggested wine. Good choice!"

  • "Unfortunately our experience at Ella's was not very enjoyable. The restaurant was very noisy and there were way too many tables crammed into a small space. The service was adequate at best, and the food was average; for the price we did not feel it was a good value, especially compared to other restaurants in the area. We were a small group of 6 that meet for dinner on a regular basis and were looking forward to our evening. We were visiting after dinner while our server took care of the dinner tickets, and we were encouraged to leave by the hostess. She informed us that there were customers waiting to be seated. That will be our last visit to Ella's."

  • "We have eaten at Ella many times, it is our favorite! The menu for the Valentine Special Dinner was incredible. Chef Hyde out did himself. I told everyone that the meal ranked in my top 5 meals of all time. We have eaten in some of the best resturants in the world and this ranked up at the top. Cudos to Amy, David and Chefs!!!!!"

  • "I took my wife to ELLA for Valentines Day and because of the weather we were almost 30 minutes late getting there. The owner and his mother took great care of us and found a table in a reasonable length of time. I can honestly say my wife enjoyed browsing about the art gallery and fortunately I got out of there without hurting my wallet. We both selected the 3 course meal, most items were delicious however the Sea Bass was inconsistently cooked. I contributed that to the number of people eating at the same time. Like most high-end restaurants I feel there is an over use of cheeses and mushrooms in there dishes. There was plenty of variety to select from, we will go back!"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Impeccable food and service from the first course to the last. We received personal attention from the owners, Amy and Larry, and the restaurant manager, Dave. Everything contributed to a night to always remember."

  • "Our first experience was very positive at this local gem. it's attached to an art gallery which makes it unique for a suburban restaurant. We were a bit surprised to discover they did not have a full menu on this particular date (prix frixe) but we're adaptable types. The only real downside was not being able to swap out courses between the four and five course options. Again, not a deal breaker by any stretch. Very busy (to be expected on Valentine's Day) but the atmosphere was still intimate enough to enjoy conversation with wine. The wine list is fairly extensive with plenty of selections from Ohio-based vineyards. Service was prompt and efficient, and food was excellent. Great little place and can't wait to try their full menu!!"

  • "Great new restaurant, good was excellent. We will return."

  • "The service was great and some dishes were well prepared. Unfortunately the filet was a subpar cut and the mushrooms were covered in liquid smoke flavor."

  • "My husband and I went to ELLA for Valentine's Day, we had been there once before and it was delicious! This was a set menu that was $55 pers person for a 4 course meal. Some things we good others were ok and the portions were very very small for the price. We will try it again on a non-holiday special menu occation to see. Was a bit disappointed when I had to go home and feed my husband after dropping $150 for dinner for 2"

  • "We celebrate valentine's day at Ella's. We got an early sitting (5:30). My significant other is not a dessert eater and wanted to substitute a second starter. This was a non-starter, although courteously refused. The lobster bisque was excellent, nicely seasoned, with plenty of lobster tidbits. The foie gras was cooked correctly but little underdone to my other's taste. We both had rack of lamb which seemed more of a lamb chop with two bones then a rack, but it was perfectly prepared and nicely seasoned. I got both desserts which I guiltily enjoyed (chocolate truffles, chocolate covered strawberry, butter cookie with jam and whipped cream). The portions were nicely balanced, making the balance of the evening much more pleasant.."

  • "As always, food was outstanding. Our reservation for four people was for 7pm, and we were not seated until 730."

  • "This seems like a well-designed/run place. Host was organized and friendly and service was great. Local artists' works make up the decor which we enjoyed. The menu is well-thought out and has something for everyone. My girlfriend really enjoyed the linguini and I agreed it looked/tasted quite great. I was a little disappointed with the burger because the patty was excellent and cooked right but it was served on a Hawaiian roll which seems like a really odd choice. I'd have to assume they ran out of the "purple sage challah roll" listed in the menu on the website and had to substitute so I ended up eating it without the bun. If you're a burger lover I'd be sure to ask before ordering. Still a place we'd consider giving another try."

  • "Arrived at 6:10 PM. Happy Hour still in full swing. Very Noisy. Restaurant used Happy Hour seating area for our table reservation. We were sitting 10 feet from the Bar but were advised Happy Hour Menu not available. Cup of Gumbo was mostly seasoned broth with a little rice. No meat or seafood to be found so a Vegetarian would be pleased. Slider plate at $9.95, one slider each of chicken and a beef barbecue, was pedestrian with little flavor when compared to Eddie Merlots or Marcello's as recent examples. The sliders were presented on a dry cheese biscuit with little cheese flavor. Wine by the glass appeared to be marked up more than most Central Ohio restaurants mark up. Doubt we will go back to Ella's."

  • "We had a lovely dinner (first time dining at Ella) and the wine choices were excellent (although the one I originally ordered "just sold out", but the second choice was equally impressive). Our server was pleasant and knowledgeable, but the food delivery process was VERY slow. 6 pm reservation; 7 pm entrees on table (with an 8 pm show to make at the McCoy) Our server raced around from table to table, without really being able to be "involved" with any of his guests/tables. Maybe he was the only one working? Anyway - we'll still be back. I'm sure it was just a fluke."

  • "The scallop special was very good. One of our guests wasn't quite happy with the sea bass. No problem they replaced it with the trout dish, which she really enjoyed. The staff and owners are very friendly and personable. They want your dining experience to be a great one."

  • "Having made reservations through Open Table, we arrived early and were seated right away. Passing the bar, we saw that it was full. We were seated at one of those half table/half booth arrangements. Our server was attentive. He helped us chose between the many choices. My wife had the panko-crusted butternut squash. It seemed to be the popular dish among the women that night as we saw several other tables getting it. I had the steak. It was topped off with a red wine sauce. The combination of flavors was reminiscent of a beef bourgoine. We each had a dessert. My wife had the crème brulee with raspberries and I had the southern pecan pie, which was so rich I could not finish it."
