  • "Very nice restaurant, but a bit pricey! Ordered what we thought was a glass of wine, and out came a bottle. On a first date, it's hard to ask them to return it. Really different place. Probably wouldn't return. The food portions were small, and for the money spent, I could've had 3 dinners somewhere else!"

  • "The food was fabulous. We ordered the toma cheese as an appetizer and were not disappointed. Beef tenderloin and the bacon pork tenderloin were our entrees. Cooked perfectly and melt in your mouth juicy. It was phenomenal! Our waitress was great too, very attentive and knowledgable about the menu. We will be back!"

  • "The menu options are limited. Out server was stretched too thin and was not available, and when he was, he was in a rush to catch up to attend other tables need. Food was interesting and innovative. The restaurant is spacious but there are a few table that are too close to each other. Wine list had a few rare catches that I liked. Overall, a good restaurant in Sacramento but there is room for improvement."

  • "We visited Ella for a birthday celebration. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees. The appetizers tasted fine, but were difficult to eat. The Toma cheese was so heavily roasted that we couldn't get it to separate from the board. The bone marrow was delicious, but the bread tasted chewy and old. The entrees were a major disappointment. Scallops were undercooked and my trout was covered with so many other ingredients, you couldn't taste the fish. And, the fish, when alone, was very bland. We then sat with our dirty plates in front of us for 30+ minutes, as our waitress was nowhere to be found. Needless to say, we skipped dessert-- sad for a birthday celebration. Not worth the expense."

  • "Ella's has become a family favorite for celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. Always great food. Always great service."

  • "Ultimately to us, dining at a fine restaurant is about a great meal and Ella did not disappoint in that regard. Our appetizers (small plates on the menu) and entrees were all delicious and creative. The wine list has enough depth and variety to satisfy most wine enthusiasts, along with some great cocktail selections and a variety of top-shelf bourbons and whiskeys. Sadly, while our server was nice enough, slip ups such as bringing the wrong wine to the table and serving lukewarm coffee with dessert -- twice, in fact -- left us unimpressed. The mediocre service keeps us from awarding 5 stars overall. Too bad, because the food was great. But service is part of the fine dining experience, and our service was not great."

  • "We very much enjoyed our dining experience at Ella. Waitstaff were knowledgeable and attentive, food was well prepared and interesting and when the server forgot to mention the corkage fee (which I fully expected to pay) she comped it since she didn't inform us of it - I tipped her on the entire amount PLUS the corkage fee since I didn't ask and as I said, I fully accepted there would be one. We went during Bourbon & Bacon Month (July), and enjoyed a great bourbon bread and baked cheese appetizer"

  • "This restaurant is phenomenal. Service is incredible and the food is fantastic. Exceptional selection of whiskey and amazing gin and tonics."

  • "Dinner at Ella's feels like going to a party! The food is excellent and features unusual ingredients -- all mentioned in the menu. A nice plus is valet parking since downtown parking in Sacramento is a pain."

  • "My Wife chose Ella's because we had not been there for awhile because it's further from home than we often go . Thank god she did because it was awesome. Service was the best we can remember since a Napa experience a few year ago. Highly recommend! Can't go wrong with the Sellands family!"

  • "We had a delightful evening celebrating a birthday and college graduation. Our waiter was very accommodating - requested a substitution in place of dairy- chef accommodated and presentation was excellent. FOOD WAS DELICIOUS. All staff members were pleasant, helpful, and personable. From pre dinner drinks to delightful dessert we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at the Ella Dining Room!!!"

  • "We have been to Ella quite a few times over the past years, but the past two times were disappointing experiences. Their signature cocktails lacked flavor or originality. An ordinary version of their specialty gin and tonic, for example, would have been far superior. Food is expensive and some of the standard items have been taken off the menu (carbonara, for example). The service was adequate, but should have been much better given the number of staff circling the floor. The bar scene was hopping and folks were having a good time. Not sure that I would rank Ella as the top restaurant in town after these past two meals, though."

  • "The Selland family of restaurants serves food with a passion! Impeccable service elevates dining to an event."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner here. Standout dish was the Crispy Pork Belly - Delicious! Service was not quite up to expectations, but I think our server was relatively new, didn't know the menu very well. We were excited to go here after being blown away by The Kitchen (another Selland family restaurant). But afterwards, as said we enjoyed our meal and will come back, but not before we try out other new places we haven't been."

  • "My wife and I had a great experience at Ella. From start to finish, we were treated with impeccable service and excellent food. The wine list is really extensive and outstanding. The menu is limited (one page), but the items we ordered were all terrific. Ella is now one of my favorite restaurants in Sac."

  • "Ella seems like a "wannabe" fine dining experience. All of the elements are there, they just haven't been perfected. I did appreciate the attentive service staff, and the lovely appearance & decor. Yet the tables are placed too close together, so I ended up hearing the entire conversation at the table next to me while I could barely hear my date. The worst part is that the food was only so-so, and I felt let down paying so much for it. I could honestly make better versions of their plates at home. Even the "artisanal" cocktails were just average. So I won't be going back. I do like their other outpost, Selland's, which is more reasonably priced & you still get good food and good service."

  • "Hands-down one if the BEST restaurants in Sacramento! Rave reviews from the entire family (which includes a couple fairly particular eaters). The entire evening was delightful ... gorgeous restaurant; excellent, resourceful staff; attention giving to details; amazing food; great ambiance ... beautiful evening all around. Thanks for a truly fantastic experience"

  • "Ella always has something interesting to offer. The mixed green salad with pistachios was the hit for me. In the past there has always been a vegetarian option but not this night. The chef was accommodating and made something special for us and it was quite good."

  • "We went to Ella for our anniversary dinner, hoping for a nice quiet dining experience which seems hard to find nowadays in Sacramento. We had a lovely evening from the moment we arrived. Service was attentive and gracious, food was as delicious as it looked, and we could hear each other across the table without shouting! We couldn't ask for more and will definitely return."

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful time at Ella's. We were celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary. We each started off with a glass of Schramsberg Brut Rose. My wife selected the Stone Fruit & Burrata salad while I opted for the mixed herb salid. Both were outstanding. We both selected the Pan Seared Scallops. The scollops were among the best I ever eaten. They were cooked perfectly. Our waiter was efficient, but not overbearing. We had a table for two next to a window. We plan to return."

  • "Following my raise at work, I decided to treat my parents out to a nice dinner. I've been hearing good things about the restaurant so I took the plunge. We started the night with oysters and bone marrow and they were prepared with the utmost care. I don't recall the main course due to a large crowd of young professionals at the bar next to our table. They were constantly moving away from the bar towards us and lingered around our personal space. However, our waiter neatly diffused the situation and offered to comp our dessert which was a very polite gesture. Overall, the service was great as well as the food. It is definitely a place that deserves a visit if you're in the sacramento area."

  • "Such a wonderful experience! The food was delicious all around. We started with the succulent pork belly, decadent bone marrow, and oysters. Since my husband has been trying to be 95% vegetarian, he had specific requests and all were accommodated by the chef. My children and I enjoyed our perfectly cooked and seasoned scallops with the creamy kale. My mother-in-law had the double cut pork chop which was perfectly pink and juicy and more than enough for two meals! Our server, Dave, was excellent and we really enjoyed chatting with him and learning more about wine; in spite of how busy he was, he didn't make us feel that we were taking up too much of his time. The entire staff was very professional and on top of everything!"

  • "wonderful dinner experience before Wicked and to celebrate a birthday- check in and initial service was a little spotty due to the pre-theatre rush but the Ella pros kicked in and we enjoyed another smooth, seamless and enjoyable Ella dinner- the outstanding house gin and tonic is one of my favorite Sac cocktails- the special shrimp pasta dish was great and the pork chop entree with gouda flavored grits worked together nicely. Ella is our favorite sac restaurant for special occasions-"

  • "Have dined here many times. On this occasion the service was characteristically friendly and attentive, but food was a bit slow to arrive from the kitchen and drinks (glasses of wine) were very slow to arrive from the bar, or from wherever else they might've been poured."

He was really friendly and professional. We enjoyed the entire team, the great food (scallops were fantastic!) and atmosphere. We'll be back!!"

  • "We had a big table behind us who took joy in screaming about every little thing! Hard to eat when you are wincing constantly... Bone marrow was great, burrata cheese with stone fruit - awesome, and scallops were perfectly cooked! Fresh oysters were so good, we ordered twice!"

  • "Our server, Jill, was friendly, attentive, and very knowledgable of the menu items. She took excellent care of us, and the food was just delicious! It's perfect for lunch and valet parking for the Community Center Theater. "

  • "My mum and I were surrounded by diners who were lunching before seeing Wicked. My mum kept remarking on the elegance of the restaurant, the wonderful service, and the excellent food. Loved the steak frites. Cooked perfectly with crisp thin fries in the French tradition. My mum thought her thick cut pasta and fresh prawns were terrific. "

  • "We were celebrating our anniversay with dinner and tickets to Wicked. We started with cocktails which were very good, but quite expensive even though they were made from scratch which we appreciated. The highlight was well prepared, fantastic, creative food. My wife had the scallops in a wonderful sauce, I had beef tenderloin which was perfect. A side of peppers was good, not great. Pavlova was very good for dessert. We didn't care for their coffee - too bitter. Wine and beer selections were very good. Nice ambience - nice casual, not at all stuffy. The service was impeccable. We had a fun time there, enjoyed our meal and will go back."

  • "I picked Ella for celebrating a retirement for a co-worker. I cannot vouch for the other two people, however, my hamburger was a mess, even though tasty. Added fillings kept squishing out of the bun to the point where my cloth napkin got so soiled I had to ask for a fresh one from wiping my hands with every bite. Also, the noise level on the patio from Regional Transit trains was very interruptive. A warning for those events was warranted by the head waiter. The cheddar french fries were excellent, crisp and tasty. The specials in food and drink were varied and affordable. It was nice being asked which color napkin was appropriate."

  • "The food, service and ambience was excellent! I had the fried chicken, which I never get at restaurants because it's never that good, but was recommend to me. Absolutely worth it! The home made Tabasco was unbelievable wonderful, and brought home my left overs. My husband had the salmon and it was so delicious, it was gone in minutes, with barely a word spoken. I also had the broccolini, and that too, was fantastic. We even went for dessert, tres leches cake. Simply heavenly!"

  • "Easy walking distance from anywhere downtown and an excellent valet service. Ella's food is easily the best in town with a Napa Valley vibe, flavor and diverse menu. Something for every one in your group, steak, fish and vegan meals prepared flawlessly. "

  • "Ella's is one of Sacramento's several "A-list" restaurants, with great attention to local, fresh food, creative presentation, and attention to all details. Wonderful wine list that also offers half bottles -- a huge plus that more should practice! Service is attentive and servers knowledgeable, if perhaps a tad TOO attentive. "

  • "Wow - very modern and relaxed atmosphere. Upscale but somehow casual atmosphere at the same time. I have only seen food like this on Top Chef. I love the small plates and have had wonderful steak tartar and bone marrow. Dinner for one person without wine and including appetizer, soup, desert and tip is around $100.00 - if you leave a good tip, which you should always leave a good tip because they work hard and deserve it. They wait on you hand and foot and they change the menu seasonally. Eating here is an experience, not just a meal. "

  • "Subject line says it all (but I will write more). Ella consistently provides exceptional food and stellar service. Our server was knowledgeable of the ingredients of each selection and guided me to what options were gluten free. The chef was able/willing to modify a couple of additional items as well! "
