The ingredients are over the top fresh and local which translate to Sacramento's best in every way. As a farmer's daughter and 4th generation Calofornian, Ii have an appreciation for family farmed ingredients but Ella manages to make it taste like it is a selected for a 30 seat restaurant which it is not. I love to try to the new things, but I also like to come back to get a second helping of the dishes we loved! Always always have the pasta dish. It has consistently been our favorite, whether beef cheek stroganoff or papperdelle with egg and cream. Quail was tasty but of course, a small portion. Steak tartare was seasoned perfectly. We've had a burratta dish every time: never a disappointment! Service was friendly, but not overly quick. We had a number of servers bring out our various orders from drinks to entrees. My husband raved about his Steak Diane. My Blackened Cod with Pork Belly was so so. It had more oil than I expected. We split the asparagus with poached egg, which was a delight. We were not impressed with the two side dishes, green beans with onions and a sauteed pepper dish. Our server upsold the side dishes stating the main courses were on the smaller side. In hindsight we would have been fine ordering just the bread with butter, asparagus salad and entrees. The desserts were fresh, not overly sweet. We eat food every day, but the food at Ella's was so good I felt like it was my first meal ever. The servers are so kind and authentic people, no pretense. An elegant restaurant where they put your money where your mouth is! Try the house-made gin and tonic or the server's wine recommendation. I hope my wife and I find an occasion to return soon. I did not appreciate the three phone calls from OPEN TABLE personel asking me to confirm my reservation. I responded to the first two received on the 26th and 27th. The third one was received 40 minutes before our reservation was scheduled. Since we were enroute from Chico I choose not to respond. Then, on our arrival at home, to find an email asking us to inform you as to why we were a no show was too much. I would like an apology from you as to the mix-up. Apparently you now accept that we did show ON TIME. Sloppy reservation procedures do nothing to improve the public acceptance of your service. Preparation and presentation was well done as well. The server at our table was friendly and helpful. There was one rough service spot. We arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation and despite many empty tables (our reservations were for 6 pm) we were asked to wait anyway. Somewhat understandable, but then they forgot to seat us after our reservation time came and past and we needed to remind them we were still there. We dined on grilled Scottish salmon with Brussels sprouts and bacon, a bottle of Russian River chardonnay, and a few scoops of their superb chocolate sorbet. Our service was attentive without being intrusive and the food was beautifully prepared. They even brought us a little stool to set by the table for birthday presents.
