Diner Reviews
  • "We have been to Elements several times and always enjoy the excellent food and dining experience. For this meal we had the soft shell crab special, and the clay pot(with crab & shrimp) special. Both were excellent, as was the server. Next time we will check out the new wine bar."

  • "The menu is varied and it is very easy to find many interesting and delicious choices. The portions were larger than expected. We shared an order of Imperial Rolls as an appetizer and they were excellent. My wife had the soft shell crab special and I had the Saigon Noodles, both very good to excellent and plentiful. The bread was delicious and we did not have room for dessert which people at the next table were raving about. Our gripe: even though the wine list was extensive, we were not sure of the wine we wanted and when I suggested to the waitress that I would appreciated a small taste of a wine served by the glass, she informed us that "we do not do that anymore." We did not have wine."

  • "Only frustration is lack of a truly quiet area to have business discussions over dinner!"

  • "This was our last dinner before handing our daughter to Duke. We love to eat well and followed the Open Table suggestion. What a pleasant surprise! Loved every bite. The waitress (Elena?) provided exceptional service."

  • "Fabulous Asian fusion that takes advantage of the southern ingredients available. Delicious appetizers, I loved the tempura asparagus. Filet mignon melted in your mouth. The Pacific Rim Pan roast was loaded with local seafood and in a broth that resonates comfort food! The attentive service from beginning to end was sensational. I was not that blown away with desserts. I loved the new twists in the meal, but prefer traditional sweets. Not crazy about basil flavored pannacotta. Would definitely return."

  • "This was our first visit to Elements and we were delighted with the meal!. The food was delicious. The fish taco appetizer was outstanding. The service was excellent and the staff very friendly. Although we were very full after our meal we decided to go for dessert hearing that there was an in-house pastry chef who was touted as excellent. The desserts were phenominal and we were so glad we went for it! WE will DEFINITELY return!"

  • "Inside, quite noisy. We ate outside which was lovely. Salad, outstanding. Entree, excellent. Dessert, overpriced and mediocre."

  • "To write a review of Elements without being repetative, one needs a thesaurus of superlatives. The staff were attentive without being cloying, and knew their menu offerings as well as the subtleties of their wine list. service was prompt, but never rushed, The ambience created was gracious and relaxing, a fine accompaniment of the splendid food.It would be easy to become attached to some of the menu favorites. The meal was an artistic as well as a gastronomic treat."

  • "We hadn't been here since the new menu and renovations, but the food was terrific--no weak spots to be seen. I started with a great Elements Salad with blue cheese and my entree was Saigon Noodles. The salad was big and I only made it through half of the noodles but they were great the next day, too. My husband ordered several starters: one selection of sashimi, Imperial rolls, tuna tartare, and Vietnamese wedding soup. All were very fresh and delicious. My ginger mojito was a perfect accompaniment on a warm summer evening on the patio. We'll be going back soon."

  • "We have visited Elements twice now and were very, very pleased on both occasions. The waitstaff is polite, knowledgeable and professional. They truly enjoyed helping us. Everyone in our party ordered different dishes and were impressed by the presentation as well as the taste. We ordered the special which was prepared table side and delicious. All around dining favorite for our family."

  • "Mimi and I have been here many times. Elements is by far, our favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill. I can only recall three restaurants in the United States that we rate as "OUTSTANDING". The soft shell crab appetizer was the best I have ever eaten. Menu dishes are uniquely flavored with exceptional presentation. The service matches the food, just outstanding! The owner and chef along with his daughters are great hosts. This was our anniversary which I mentioned in my reservation. We were greeted with "Happy Anniversary" and given 'the table' in the far corner."

  • "My wife and I have eaten at Elements twice and both times were top-notch. My wife liked her cucumber-jalapeno sour drink, her tuna "flight", and her shrimp & sweet potato fritters. I had a nice Asheville IPA, the Vietnamese wedding soup ((excellent!) and the calamari. We added two desserts -- a creme brulee (good) and a light peach cheesecake (excellent). The decaf coffee was a bit on the weak side for our tastes, unfortunately. But overall we left feeling that we had gotten an excellent meal at a fair (not cheap) price. Our waiter was helpful but a bit too enthusiastic at times (for our tastes); others would probably find him entertaining. He did his job well."

  • "Highly recommend this place...very unique food and delish cocktails!"

  • "Elements offers a varied menu of intriguing dishes with an Asian twist. The signature shrimp dish contrasts crispy with smooth bathed in a delightful sauce. The Viet rolls were a fine appetizer to share as was the soft shell crab sushi rolls --a seasonal dish. We liked the " lamb two ways" as a perfect dish to split. Loved the bento box as a great vegetarian presentation--beautiful , varied and delicious. I always recommend Elements to friends for a grand dining experience."

  • "We are so glad that elements is back on line. Dinner was very good, as usual; and the restaurant was nicely busy for a Wednesday evening."

  • "We went to Elements for our anniversary. We had lemon chicken rolls as an appetizer, which were rubbery and tasteless except for the satay sauce. The scallops had good flavor, but the duck was disappointing. It had very little taste or flair and I did not enjoy it. By this time it was 8:00 and the noise level was becoming distracting. We were having a good conversation and enjoying the remains of our wine. However, shortly after our plates were cleared, the hostess asked us to leave or move to the bar. We felt like we were being thrown out, on our anniversary no less. It seemed rude and uncalled for and we were very offended. With indifferent food, uncomfortable atmosphere, and poor hospitality, we will not be going back."

  • "We came to Elements from Charlotte and it was surely worth the drive! I had a great beet salad and my husband participated in "Lobsterfest": the lobster was cooked perfectly! We sat in the new wine bar, which was quiet and private. Our server was attentive and friendly. She recommended wines to go with our dishes. We give Elements 5 stars!"

  • "food has been excellent 4 out of 4 visits. most in our group had the lobster special which everyone enjoyed. I had the duck which was perfectly cooked and overall an excellent dish."

  • "We had a wonderful lunch. The food and service were fabulous."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "We returned to Elements once again as my wife enjoyed it last time. The food is fair, but nothing more. The duck is so overly sauced and cloyingly sweet that I had to scrape the blueberry sauce off and pour soy sauce over it just to regain some semblance of balance. None of the four of us thought our meals were better than average (and we each tried a different entre, in addition to our appetizers). Similarly the service is acceptable at best. The waiter was inattentive and hard to find. The tables are small and barely fit four adults with our dishes. Considering the price of the meal, this was on the whole a rather disappointing dinner. Elaine's on Franklin Street is head and shoulders better, for the same price (or less)."

  • "I have been here before and had a better expereince. This place has a wonderful atmosphere and a high level of noise but acceptable. However food and service is variable. At times it has been one of the best and other times moderate like this time. We had a waiter who I suppose was new but it was annoying to not be able to get his attention. On several occasions he was looking at me and I called him over but he turned around and walked away. In terms of food the calamari and tuna tacos were very good. The soft shell crab was greasy."

  • "We impatiently waited for the restaurant to reopen from water damage and were absolutely delighted with returning to this culinary gem. The tuna tacos were out of this world. It was the best fish tacos that we've ever had. The Vietnamese Wedding Soup was full of fresh shrimp, gigantic pieces of white asparagus, a quail egg which created a wonderful blend of flavors. For the main course, we ordered the soft-shell crabs, which were huge and meaty, and perfectly prepared. The wine bar with the prepaid card is a lot of fun and a smart choice as it allowed us to taste several different wines over the course of dinner. The coconut layered cake rounded off the meal perfectly. We are going back this Friday! Chef Chuong is a true talent!"

  • "I dined at Elements for lunch on Wednesday and it was AMAZING! I had the bento box special featuring fried catfish with a red curry sauce, rice, fresh fruit, tuna roll with a peanut sauce and greens. It was the best thing I've ever eaten!"

  • "Two of us had the Walnut Prawns, the other two had the Bento Box special. Both were excellent. For dessert we ordered the Six Layer Coconut Cake and the Peach Chutney Cheesecake. These people know how to do dessert as well. Positively delicious!"

  • "This was a very good experience. The menu was interesting. The food was very good. The waiter was casual yet professional. My only issue was that it took longer than expected to get the food."

  • "I am from New York and have been to so many wonderful restaurants. From the wine selection, appetizer, entree to dessert, each item was more delicious than the next. My friend cancelled but I wanted to have a chance to dine again. I had the tuna flight which was a wonderful sampling of different kinds of tuna. My main course was a stir fry Filet Mignon with wonderful accompaniments of a delicious blue cheese salad and truffle fries. I had a glass of Riesling and the Finale was the best Coconut Cake. So good but I could only eat half. Van, the owner is also a delight and makes you feel at home. Make reservations- you will love it!"

  • "This is probably the finest restaurant in Chapel Hill and surroundings. The food is just wonderful and the service was top rate."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "We ordered halibut; it was overcooked (too dry) and a little too expensive. The service was good. When we and the other couple with us paid our credit card bills, they had accidentally switched our credit cards and we didn't notice. This required us to meet the next day to exchange cards; this was a waste of time. Also, the restaurant management, for some reason, had fired some of the waitstaff that we really liked; this was also disappointing."

  • "good service…..really great food. We did the 3-course for restaurant week……and may actually repeat it tomorrow night since it was so delicious."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "We keep on coming back and they now have a wine bar right next to the restaurant that you can walk through to. We tried that first before we had our dinner. The tastings of the wine were a wonderful way to start the night."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "This has become my new favorite local restaurant. I have never had a bad experience - either in food or service. I went on Friday with a friend who had never been - and she too loved it. I am always happy to bring a new person here because I know it will be a good experience."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "Elements aims for urban sophistication with inventive flavor combinations and attractive presentation in a small plates format. But a very large floor staff in a half-full dining room somehow couldn't keep up with water refills or clearing empty plates. At one point, a second glass of wine was delayed because "there weren't any dry glasses, because we're so busy." Service needs some training and better communication. Chef could stand to ease up on the salt too -- my lamb chops were as salty as Fritoes."

  • "We dined at Elements during Restaurant Week. We enjoyed everything, and thought it was one of the best dinners we have had in a long time. The food is so creative and well executed, with a very friendly wait staff."
