élan is a new restaurant by Chef David Waltuck and George Stinson. The menu is the evolution of David Waltuck's groundbreaking cuisine that elevated and sustained Chanterelle as an award-winning restaurant for 30 years. élan emanates an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and full of energy; the service is gracious and smart, yet informal. The restaurant features a spacious front room for cocktails and light fare, a 12-seat bar, and a 48-seat dining room. Casual diners and those seeking more elaborate or special-occasion experiences will be equally welcome. Dinner will be served 7 days a week, lunch will be served 5 days a week, and David's take on weekend brunch will be served Saturday and Sunday.Continued

- OpenTable Diner Since 2005Dined on 9/28/2014i had cold air blowing down on me drectly, whch the very polite waiter promised to fix, but it actually got wose. As I was alone I just movd across th table. The watermelon gazpacho was remarkable, and the striped bss inred wine sauce was tasty, but I found the dessert quit miniature compared to the price. Those who knew Chanterelle wll be disappointd, those who did not wll probably find the restaurant better.

After apologizing to my dining companions, I thought to myself that I should have gone to a diner where you get better food and better selection at a fair price. Don't waste your time or money here.

- DisappointingJSNYCVIPDined on 9/24/2014After stingy pours of a martini and a glass of champagne, we then experienced a strong up-sell by the sommelier on a $105 bottle of Riesling when there were four other options at about half that price. Vegetables a la grecque were ice-cold and had to be sent back. At the correct temperature they were meh. A special of stuffed squash blossoms were mushy and bland. The seafood sausage was uneven-some bites good, some almost tasteless. Entrees of duck and duck burger (a special) were good, but the duck came with no veggies (just two small potato filled egg rolls) and the burger was $30(!) including hash-browns and an egg. Stone fruit sundae for dessert was ok. $325 for two including tip--at that price point, quality needs much improvement.

Home baked soft pretzels with mustard butter were delicious. Next we had the pot stickers and the seafood sausage. We were comped with the zucchini blossom. Superb. I had the sweetbreads. The rest ordered lamb, duck and salmon. All were excellent. Huge order of sweet and sour eggplant. Lastly--a blackberry-blueberry tart with corn ice cream. Yum. Chef Waltuck's new restaurant is more casual than his older, posh Chantarelle, and the food is less stunning. But elan is very good nonetheless. Some dishes are imaginative, some are less challenging for timid palates. But all in all, the restaurant is a good one. Because it's not quite wonderful enough to justify traveling any distance for a dinner, I'm glad to have it in my neighborhood.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.

The seafood sausage appetizer is amazing and the sea urchin guacamole with tarot root chips is yummy. Indulge in the buttermilk pancakes with bourbon maple syrup and creme fraiche, it is worth every delicious bite!!! The buttermilk biscuits are fluffy and so tasty they are hard to resist. Overpriced for what is served. Will NEVER go again. I can't believe that this is the Chanterelle people. That was a wonderful restaurant and inventive. Regret going.

Wonderful cocktail (Martinez) for me, and excellent selection of wines for my wife. At table, service was relaxed and outstanding throughout, and server was really helpful with menu choices. Started with a couple of foie gras "lollipops", seafood sausage, and a summer salad (the Salad Expert says this was the best salad she's had in years!); main courses were more wine, another Martinez, a lamb preparation and a very rich burger! The duck and foie gras burger was exceptional, melt in your mouth good; the stone fruit sundae was the perfect summer treat. We celebrated a family birthday, and everyone enjoyed the experience. Kudos for the cocktail menu too and to our lovely server, who was friendly, informative and always attentive. The only disappointment was the chicken pot pie, which looked great but tasted ordinary.
