Diner Reviews
  • "We needed a place to dine while in town. We took a chance at Elaines and it was terrific. Sometime choosing by chance works well."

  • "Fantastic food in Chapel Hill. The service got off to a rocky start. I had made a reservation a week in advance and they said they had an unexpectedly large party just show up so they were a little slow -- which seems unacceptable for a restaurant that I think considers itself "finer dining." Some of the menu items (small menu to start) were no longer available and it took at least 10 minutes for our waitress to come by our table for the first time and another 10 minutes for our drink order. BUT the food was really delicious. We live in Chicago and have eaten at many great restaurants and everything we ate was delicious and creative and great portion sizes."

  • "We had great food. Appetizer Portions were small for large group but very good. They did run out of bread due to a large group that came in and didn't have reservations. I would recommend reservations"

  • "This was our 3rd time dining at Elaine's. We brought along the Grandpa's and had a fabulous meal. Each time we have been at this gem of a restaraunt has been exceptional. The meal is always the high point of visiting our daughter at UNC. The Chef's creations are interesting but not too crazy and exceptionally delicious. The service is great and the atmosphere is relaxed but spirited. Favorite on Franklin!"

  • "My wife and I have tried many of the "acclaimed" restaurants in the area and have been totally disappointed each time. Elaine's, however is the exception. Our server, Brian was welcoming, sincerely friendly and very attentive. There wasn't one aspect of the food that wasn't outstanding. Chef Bret Jennings is a Master. Succulent mussels and clams and the pork chop was as tender as a filet mignon. Desserts are where most restaurants fall short, but the chocolate cake and the pineapple upside down cake were amazing. We will dine at Elaine's at least once a month, if not more frequently."

  • "I had no idea what I was getting into with Elaine's. We needed a last minute reservation on a Saturday night and they had a spot on open table. Elaine's is probably my favorite special occasion restaurant now. The whole concept is built around being the best...without being stuffy. It's inviting and warm, lively even. The staff are all friendly and great at making you feel welcome (without feeling like you're being greeted by caricatures). The food...best mussels and fries ever. The broth is perfect. Most everything we had was perfect. Subtle but interesting. They must be working their tails off to do something this fantastic but everyone looks like they're pros."

  • "Always a great meal. Wish the crowd tended a bit younger/more vibrant, but that is Chapel Hill for you."

  • "I was visiting Chapel Hill for a conference, so it was a very busy weekend for restaurants. Although the food was unerringly splendid, there was one large problem. I arrived at 6:25pm for a 6:30pm reservation and was seated immediately. I ordered a glass of wine. The other members of my party were detained and did not arrive till 6:50. At 6:45 the waiter spoke to me and said the manager had asked where the rest of my party was and wanted to alert me that we had to leave by 8:30. What if my entire party HAD in fact arrived at 6:30--but we had a long lush dinner and were not finished by 8:30? Would they have kicked us out? I understand the stresses of the business, but I don't think this was a polite way to handle it."

  • "We met friends for dinner here and really enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere. It was quiet enough for the four of us to have a good conversation but we didn't have to keep our voices down. The wine list is phenomenal and we all enjoyed our entrees and desserts. Such a great experience!"

  • "Having been a regular during Elaine's earliest years, I continue to be pleased by the chef's and his staff's consistency now, many years later. The dishes are invariably delicious, flavors masterfully matched, presentation attractive, served expertly by cheerful servers. Elaine's never disappoints."

  • "Never received such delightful service! The restaurant called to confirm our reservation and created a special menu tagline for the birthday boy's menu! Elegant restaurant for a special occasion."

  • "Chef's recipes are unique, and the food is prepared perfectly. We were very well attended by our waiter, yet not overly so. This is fine dining with the restaurant operating at the highest professional quality in every category, and doing so with warmth, not a professional aloofness. If you want superb food, and to dine in a comfortable atmosphere, this is where you want to be. We found our dining experience to be excellent."

  • "We had an incredible dinner. Every morsel was wonderful: the Foie Gras, Mussels, Duck, Bison, and the Scallops, all cooked to perfection. Service was great but not intrusive. Loved it!"

  • "Elaine's is one of our favorite restaurants in Chapel Hill. We always make a point to dine there several times when we're in town for a UNC football or basketball game. We never leave disappointed. The service is good, but the food is fantastic. We started with two generously poured cocktails, which we enjoyed with their cheese plate (which could have had a bit more variety). We then moved to the soup of the day (outstanding) and the spanikopata. My partner had the pork entree and I tried the wild sturgeon on the recommendation of our waiter, and was pleased that I did. It was outstanding. Unfortunately, we did not save any room for dessert, though the menu looked great."

  • "Good food, a little pretentious, very friendly and attentive service, very poor wine suggestions and pairing."

  • "This was our second visit to Elaine's and this experience was just as perfect as our first. The service is outstanding, the ambiance sophisticated yet relaxed, and the food quality is outstanding. Interesting yet not too funky and every morsel delicious. Can't wait to get back to Chapel Hill to visit again."

  • "The service was EXCELLENT. The ambiance was wonderful. The only complaint we had was that one of the appetizers, the mackeral/arugula salad was fairly bland. Beyond that, great romantic place."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "Food was very good, tho we we're mislead as to portion size on the duck. Both men would have chosen a different entree. Server was not pleasant. Seemed harried and irritated with questions and was invasive of conversation and rather rudely interrupted our evening. Food quality was very good. Well presented, imaginative, delicious. Have eaten here once before and was ex ellent"

  • "Parents were in town visiting and this was their first chapel hill meal. What a great way to start them out. The food was delectable, the service was spectacular and the ambience was great. Couldn't recommend it more."

  • "I eat here approximately weekly and am never disappointed. One of the best restaurants in the Triangle. The chef changes the menu regularly, adding and subtracting dishes following the seasons. Always fun."

  • "Elaine's continues to deliver very good food in the always hopping environment of downtown Chapel Hill. We have frequented the restaurant many times for special occasions and always appreciate the attention to detail. Unlike many restaurants, the noise is moderate even with a full house thanks to absorbent decor on the walls. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable without being intrusive. Dessert is always special."

  • "Elaine's is a fantastic restaurant with excellent food and a really nice staff. Every dish that came out (we had a salad and an appetizer to start, two entrees, a piece of chocolate cake with ice cream and decaf coffee) was perfect. I highly recommend anyone go to Elaine's for a special occasion. Very well thought out dishes with excellent flavor."

  • "We've heard and read the hype about Elaine's since we moved here from California 7 years ago.........finally stopped by and ......... Elaine's pretty much lived up to the hype.........nice evening...........good food and ambiance........great service from Brian..........we'll go back!"

  • "Elaine's is the perfect blend of elegant dining and living room cozy. If a party of 2-4, ask for the tables up in and by the windows. The perfect place to watch people, have quiet conversation and feel down-right comfortable. That with creative and tasty dishes and a wondrous array of libations--the perfect place for any special occasion."

  • "I thought that the selected menu gave you many options to choose from. Also, the wine pairing was great with each course. It was our first time to dine at Elaine's, but it will not be our last!"

  • "This restaurant is spectacular. From the ambience, to the unique blends of idealistic cuisine, to the tremendous wine list, Elaine's is a MUST when in Chapel Hill."

  • "With the menu changing with the season, Elaine's offers delicious food with portions that are just right"

  • "The title says a lot! How many restaurants take care of the smallest details like house made crackers for their cheese plate, and include an amazing cheese like Humbolt Fog in there 3 fab cheeses? If u r a fan of Lemon Drop martinis....order it here..... Perhaps the best I've ever had and it is my favorite drink! the pork chop dish had a tittle heat and was nicely balanced. Fantastic wine pairings. The sweet potato pound cake is just sinfully good. This is a cute, unpretentious restaurant on Franklin St in downtown Chapel Hill where the quality of food and the attention to service and detail excellent, one of our favorites spots when we are in the area."

  • "I have not been to Elaines in a few years and was so excited to eat at the wonderful restaurant that I had remembered. While the ambience and service were perfect, our food was just so-so. The bread was delicious and the wine and drinks were very good. Our entrees were mediocre. My pork chop was tough and the sauce was just non-descript. Same for my husband's tuna...good tuna with underwhelming accompaniments. Must have been an "off" night for the chef."
    Dined on 11/30/2013
  • "My wife and I went to Elaine's on Saturday night before going to see a movie. I had the bison and my wife had the tuna, which were both fantastic. Our waitress recommended two really good wines that paired perfectly with the meal. We shared a dessert before heading. Following the movie, we came back for drinks at the bar and dessert #2. The only thing that could have been better is if the waitress would have told us what was on the pre-theather menu."

  • "My husband and I have gone to Elaine's for greater than 10 years and never been disappointed. It's consistently good and we are able to take our out-of-town guests there knowing that we're going to leave a very good impression. The food is unique, varied and draws heavily from local sources. The desserts are equally as good which as someone who has a sweet tooth is totally satisfying."
    Dined on 11/2/2013
  • "We had to wait at least ten minutes before we were asked if we wanted order drinks and apps. The waiter was hard to find sometimes and very un-attentive. They took our bread plates without asking if we wanted more. One of the cocktails we ordered was wrong. Now to the good stuff...the apps were delicious, especially the lamb sausage and the froie gras. The entrees were very good...the Bison was wonderful with the greens and sweet potatoes. This is a great place to eat when it comes to the food. Maybe the wait staff was having a bad night. I can see this place as being very good, even excellent when the wait staff is on their game."

  • "This was by far the best 3 course I've had. The cheese and fruit tray was shared by me and my friend. Amazing. The same applies to the vegetable goat cheese napoleon. My my my!!! I had the pork chop as the main course. It was grilled to perfection. The wait staff was stellar. This was an awesome dining experience. I will be back!!!"

  • "Elaine's on Franklin has always been our preferred haute cuisine restaurant in the area. For the quality of the food, and the reasonable prices, you won't find much better good/service in the area, and will pay 3 times more in places like Washington DC, New York for comparable food. We are leaving for Portland/OR and will miss Elaine's."

  • "2 of us dined at Elaine's during a recent trip to Chapel Hill. The table was ready at our appointed time; the food was excellent and served with inventive sides. The chocolate dessert was a big hit. This is a restaurant we will return to next time we are in Chapel Hill!"

  • "Elaine's is one of the best restaurants we know of, including those in New York and other major cities. Chef Brett takes great care in creating his menu, choosing ingredients and preparing/presenting the food. The wait staff is professional and knowledgable and makes a real effort to make the meal enjoyable. Brett is particularly diligent in finding combinations that avoid my wife's allergies. Thanks, Brett. We will be back soon!"
