Diner Reviews
  • "Food was expensive, small portions and nothing to talk about"

  • "Elaia was a food experience that my friend and I will not soon forget. The service was great because the server provided good info on the food and the wine pairing. Not a place that I could afford to frequent, but an occasional visit is something I can anticipate. Clearly it is not a place for everyone because of the cost, but a wonderful experience!"

  • "Elaia could be St. Louis' best restaurant...if only it reached it's full potential. The atmosphere is lovely, the details shine, the menu is adventurous yet simple. And the history lesson with each glass of wine is a nice extra touch. But the service needs to improve, and quickly, if this restaurant wants to survive. Part and parcel of that: ask customers their temperature preference; don't error on the side of overcooked entrees. By and large, this place has the potential to be big and to last. The flavor choices were particularly impressive. But it needs to focus more on the basics."

  • "Amazing! The "prix fixe" four course meal with wine pairings for the first three courses was as good as it gets. Our servers, bussers, and sommeliers were attentive, knowledgable, and friendly without being intrusive. Perfect for a birthday, anniversary, or special event. My only regret was no wine pairing for the dessert course. Thank you!"

  • "The food was of high quality but expensive and missing that little something extra. Service was excellent and the wine was some of the best I have had at any restaurant but the food was just not that good. I mean it was good, but not that good. Not good enough, especially at the price point."

  • "One of the best restaurants in St. Louis. A little bit on the pricey side, but food was very fresh, flavorful, and beautifully created."

  • "Went to Elaia for our anniversary, and had a wonderful experience. We had already been to Olio several times, but this was our first experience with Elaia. The restaurant is quaint and intimate, the staff was knowledgeable about both the menu and wine. We went with the four course prix fixe, and the meal really delivered both in the beautiful plating and the flavor. The highlight for me was the smore's chouquette, a beautiful flaky pastry filled with chocolate and marshmallow, yum, and perfect end to the meal! For your next special or romantic occasion, I would recommend Elaia."

  • "While many say that Chicago is a "foodie" paradise, St. Louis has many wonderful chefs that are plating excellent and creative selections for food lovers. None is better than Elaia. The care taken with each dish, and combinations of flavors, were beyond compare. We chose the ala carte 4 course menu with wine pairings, and loved the creative wine selections (from places such as Slovenia and Morocco as well as France and Italy). Sweetbreads, lamb loin and beef courses were cooked perfectly, as was the sea scallop poached in a frothy corn and black rice broth. Perhaps the highlights of the evening were the mousse and pate, served with various fruits and herbs including passion fruit beads, plum sauce, and fresh cherries. Dessert a must."

  • "We had the tasting menu, and it was impressive. We live in Europe and have dined in fine dining establishments all over Europe and major cities of the U.S., and we weren't expecting to find food of this calibre in St. Louis. Highly recommended."

  • "The service was excellent, the food was excellent, the presentation was excellent, the wine choices were unique and extensive. Elaia is the place for a special evening with your significant other or an intimate meal with another couple."

  • "new flavors and pairings never tired before, good wine pairings too. enjoyed every course. portions a little on the small side, and overall rather expensive, but still good"

  • "This is one of my favorite places. You will find choices here like no other in St. Louis. This is a place that any foodie will enjoy. Outstanding wine list with unique options from countries you would never connect with fine wines. Each course of the meal was perfect. If someone asks me for my favorite place in St Louis...Elaia gets my vote."

  • "Having grown up in St. Louis then moving away to California over 20 years ago and living in the food mecca town of Yountville, my husband and I were thrilled and somewhat surprised with Elaia. This restaurant can go head to head with any of the top names in the Napa Valley. Kudos to Ben and his staff for an amazing, wonderful meal, excellent presentation, and an outstanding sommelier! Best wishes for continued success. It was a pleasure that I hope we can return to in the future when we visit again."

  • "I heard rave reviews from Friends who had been and I was excited to go. The wine list is very impressive and the service was great. However I thought the food was just ok. The portions are incredibly small and overpriced. In a city with so many options I would not go back."

  • "Second time visit was as amazing as the first! Truly a dining experience..from the service to the wines and pairings with the mouthwatering food. Our new favorite restaurant!"

  • "Great food, great atmosphere! Recommended by a business associate. Visiting from New Jersey, and this restaurant rivals anything we have here, or in NYC!"

  • "We went to Elaia based on the Bon Appetit write-up while visiting St. Louis. This restaurant had awesome ambiance, amazing service and delicious innovative food. We did the 4 courses - and there was not a mediocre dish on the table! I had Diver Scallops which truly made me want to lick my plate! I highly recommend!"

  • "This was my second visit - I had to try it again to know if this restaurant was that amazing. Well, it is. The food selections are nothing short of elegant, and while you can byob, Andre's selections by the glass with each course is innovative and a great learning experience for those of us who are into the pairing. Smaller portions so you can try more courses, with unique flavor profiles. Limited spirits available - the focus is clearly on the wine. Expensive, so not my regular place when I am traveling to St. Louis, but have found nothing better than this. Well done!"

  • "Service was impeccable. Friendly abs welcoming staff. Very knowledgeable about good prep and wine pairings. Beautiful intimate restaurant. Food was exquisite- the best we've had in St. Louis and we dine out often. Truly a total delight ---we did of the price fixe menu w the wine pairings and would do it again. Thank you for making date night w my husband relaxing, romantic...we will return."

  • "Food for foodies and drinks to match! It's always a lovely meal when you go to Elaia, but can be a shocker if you haven't looked over the menu prices prior. The staff is great and very proud to provide high quality service. If you have a chance to talk to the drink-expert (I know he has a fancier title...) definitely do this, you'll likely learn something you didn't know. He'll give plenty of recommendations for you if you can't decide. "

  • "The food was delicious, but portions were quite small. Noise level made it difficult to converse."

  • "Really enjoyed brunch especially the tomato salad with feta. Very nice service as well. Look forward to returning on my next trip back home to St. Louis for dinner. Congrats Elaia!"

  • "Everything was perfect and I am glad I went, but it is not my type of restaurant. A bit pricy and small portions. Andre, the wine guy, was great, the food and service fabulous, but I was hungry when I left."

  • "Way to expensive for what it is. Tasty but it's not the French laundry"

  • "Elaia is pricy, but it is worth every single penny! Every single item we ordered was delicious and the spring was exceptional! We really had time to enjoy the food where each hate just has so many different flavors that you have to pause to identify all of them! Of the four courses we had, they were all delicious, perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned and perfectly paired! I recommend this restaurant for special occasions and those of you who want a real gastronomic experience!"

  • "Navigating the menu was as challenging as trying to find the restaurant. Both are somewhat complex, and at first seem to be more trouble than they are worth, but perseverance pays dividends with some terrific food. The bizarre setting prepares one to expect an excellent value ahead, but you'll be quickly disappointed with a look at the prices on the menu and on wine list, where wine comes by bottle, glass, and half-glass, and can be paired with courses, which are small. With help from the waitress, we were able to decipher the menu, ordering only an entre and starter course, and found a Sicilian red not too overpriced, and enjoyed the evening after simplifying things. It was just more work than we planned."

  • "We celebrated a friend's birthday here on a Saturday night. It was our first visit and we'll definitely be back. The food was exquisite with unusual pairings. The flavors were subtle, not overpowering, and we savored every bite. We enjoyed the commentary on each course from the server and on the wine flight from the sommelier. A very mild criticism their talks made our dinner table conversation a little disjointed. I'd love to come back to visit the sister restaurant, Olio, and to enjoy an evening on the patio."

  • "The food was excellent, possibly the best food in St. Louis. This is also the most expensive restaurant in St. Louis. Be prepared to pay a large bill."
    Dined on 4/25/2014
  • "While the food is stunning, the wine here takes the prize. Andrey, the nationally acclaimed sommelier, has compiled the most notable, interesting, and fun wine lists in the midwest. This place is a must, if for no other reason than the wine pairing."

  • "Went for my birthday and had the chef's meal with wine paring. Everything was so very special."

  • "Terrific wine program with knowledgable staff. Menu standouts include the cobia and the burrata. We ate in the Elaia dining room, which is quiet and refined. A swinging scene abounds in their connected wine bar, with different food menu, open garage doors (the wine bar is a converted service station,) and energetic crowd."

  • "My wife and I were very impressed with the knowledgeable, friendly staff. The service was excellent. I did the 4 course menue and I found multiple items for each course that looked excellent to me. The food was beautiful and the preparation spot on. The food tasted exceptional, the only weak link was the beef filet which was was average. The scallop and burrata were my favorite courses. The wine service was excellent, they focus on unique wine varietals from unique regions. I did the matched wine tasting to my 4 courses. I have to admitt the wine was fun and all the wines were nice, but none of them were exceptional and I would not purchase them or select them instead of the wines I buy for my cellar."

  • "The chef, Ben Poremba, is amazing. I eat often at Olio, the place next door. This was my first time at Elaia. It was excellent for a small group (there were 8 of us). Outstanding food and atmosphere."

  • "Definitely one of St. Louis' new top restaurants. You have to try it at least once. We were there on a Wednesday night and after 7pm, it was packed in the restaurant and down in Olio. They serve traditional courses (salmon and filets) as well as unique creations (goat cheese mousse), but the menu changes daily, which is an amazing feat. As we were celebrating a birthday, we really appreciated Chef Ben taking the time to come over and meet with us."

  • "This was a great learning experience with Andrey Ivanov, Advanced Sommelier.More information in epth on the sparkling wines of Franciacorta, their grapes, vinifying methods, ears in the barriques, steel vats and bottles, whether they were machine or hand riddled anmd all the info that a wine geek needs to put his friends to sleep. I hope I don't start quoting him during dinner parties. Andrey never makes you feel stupid when you ask questions about wines, vintages or bhargains. He understand that the important thing is that you should come away smarter not that he should show how smart he is. That is the mark of a great teacher."

  • "Second visit, with a special beer dinner. The food was excellent, though not as special as the tasting menu previously. The beers (from Perennial) were good. The service was off. Way off. Slow, inattentive, cold, and sloppy (stacking dirty dishes on the table?). A massive contrast from our previous meal, but it makes me nervous about recommending Elaia. Our out of town guests were badly underwhelmed. I don't want that to happen again."

  • "Aside from the outstanding quality and great presentation of the food, Elaia had the best service I have experienced in the St. Louis area. From the Valet, to the hostess, the server and the chef himself, we were treated like royalty. Our every need was met without being bothered. We were called by name, and as we were there for our anniversary, we received wonderful wishes and comments from not just one, but most all of the staff. They made it a point to know their customers and cater to their needs. It was a delightful evening. Thank you, Elaia!"
