A word from Ela
In November of 2011, chefs Jason Cichonski and Chip Roman partnered to open Ela, an inventive new American bar and restaurant in Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood. Ela showcases 27-year-old Cichonski, who Philadelphia Inquirer’s Craig LaBan called “one of our most exciting young chefs,” is combining an approachable menu of innovative dishes with an extensive wine and craft beer program and inspired cocktail list in a rustic-modern setting.
“Creatively, it’s wonderfully freeing to prepare food that doesn’t fit into any one genre or style; this is seasonal food, using exceptional ingredients, prepared perfectly,” says Chef Cichonski. Ela is a serious-yet-comfortable restaurant with a menu that that changes frequently throughout the year, to reflect the latest offerings.

Diner Reviews
  • "This was our second wonderful brunch at Ela (first was 12 people family outing). It was a special prix fixe three-course menu for Easter. After enjoying Kale salad and deviled eggs, all three of us chose the breakfast gnocchi. None of us had eaten gnocchi as a breakfast/brunch food, but this is an idea that should stick around. The crisp bacon and coddled egg really tied the potato pasta together and made for a smooth and delicious entree. We finished off with panna cotta with a root beer gel sauce and cocoa nibs. Fresh takes on familiar dishes, while pushing it to another level. These guys know how to be innovative without losing you. You can taste thought and energy in each bite. An added bonus was meeting Chef Jason . We will be back !"

  • "The service was excellent. The food was very good, and interesting. It is a foodie sort of place. It was definitely 4 out of 5. The kale salad tastes like parsely, and was delightfully balanced. The use of powders in the scallop noodles and soup were a plus. The duck was good, but not amazing, as was the lobster pasta. Dessert was ok. "

  • "Met 4 other women on a fridAy night. Not very busy. All of us have pretty good appetites so we ordered many small plates and opted to see how we felt after that.. Still hungry. We ordered some entries and ate some more. The portions are SMALL. Very good but small. We had a great time catching up and having some wine. We all needed to eat when we got back to our respective homes. Oh well. I don't thing I will be going with my husband - that's for sure"

  • "Havent been here since it was Judys, Got there early and requested nice corner table. Hostess did not know what to make of my request since it was a table for 4 but we were only 2. She had to go ask another hostess finally sat us where I wanted. Order sparkling water and drinks. No Bombay Sapphire no Tanqueray 10. You have to have one of them as a bar. Had to order double of Bluecoat cuz first glass was a thimble. Waitress thinks there are 4 of us so menus are a little delayed. 1st bite very good- roasted beet tartare excellent,, 2bd bite- diver scallop “noodles” stir fry yum yum. 3rd bite - rohan duck thigh “steak also good. 4th bite - vanilla-bay ice cream warm cookie dough gooey and sweet.. Desert wine and espresso. waitress was gr8t."

  • "Ela is a nice venue and the food is creative and good, that being said the prices are somewhat higher than expected/normal for the portions but if you go in knowing that, you should be fine."

  • "Great food, great staff Have already told a few friends that they should go there"

  • "My husband and I loved Ela! It was not crowded when we arrived, so I was a little skeptical. But this place is great! We had a drink at the bar. The bar menu is creative & innovative and the bartender was very knowledgeable. Our plates were delicious and creative! The scallop "noodle" was yummy & so interesting, the beet tartar was phenomenal, and the salmon shoulder was tender & flavorful. My husband has the short rib dish and said it was fantastic. I do not know why it wasn't more crowded because it is fantastic!!!"

  • "First tried this place a few months ago after recommendations from a friend. We tried the $45 tasting menu ( 4 courses) and took advantage of the half price wine avaable in Monday nights. This time I returned with work colleagues and had the delicious lobster tagliatelle and revisited the tender duck breast. The Malbec we tried was a great accompaniment.. The dishes are sized nicely, I wasn't very hungry this time and was perfectly happy with one appetizer and one main .. Sharing some dessert. Highly recommended. Our waiter was impeccable too."

  • "Charming atmosphere for Sunday brunch. The service was superb! Food was very good and not long of a wait. Those who are vegetarians or vegans must check the menu prior to visit- most choices had meat."

  • "Our wait staff team headed by Jonathan were exceptional. The food was wonderful-interesting combinations of flavors, presentations and the portions were perfect for sharing. Reasonably priced and very nice wine list. We go out to eat often so we enjoy discovering places especially those that are neighborhood gems - grear experience."

  • "Food was well prepared and interesting and delicious. Space a bit crowded, so was noisy and waiter kept bumping into us as he served other tables."

  • "I really expected to hate the scallop noodles. In fact, I kind of wanted to hate them. It seemed more like a concept than a palate pleaser, but I was completely put in my place after my first bite. They were absolutely delicious. We ordered the chef's tasting AND half the menu. It was really early, so it was really slow, so they didn't mind that we did not all order the tasting. Go. Be adventurous. Enjoy."

  • "It Was a slow Monday but out of five items only one was very good. The rest were inventive i suppose but not especially tasty. There are so many places to have dinner in Philly that have great food. I'd never go back here."

  • "The short rib with chestnut faro is a game changer."

  • "I really wanted to love this place. The ambience is awesome and the bartender is very knowledgable, but the food was just good not great. It was also a little pricey. We did the tasting menu and I really liked two of the choices I ordered but not the other two. The salmon collar was really fishy and didn't have much meat and had a very floral orange taste. Overall, we had a nice time, but I do not think I would go back."

  • "Overall this dinner was great. Nothing special on the wine/cocktail list Huge hits with the sweetbread, lamb meatballs, scalloped noodles, gnocci, and noodles in lobster sauce. Not to mention the amazing cookie dough dessert. Misses: the octopus(from someone who regularly eats it) was SO TOUGH and chewy it was almost inedible, the same for the wagyu beef, completely to tough to eat. the duck was fine just nothing special either. Overall this place is a define try!"

  • "Our experience was excellent all around. We started with some very tasty cocktails, and then had the 4-course tasting menu, which was just the right amount of food. Our server was very helpful and attentive, helping us choose the right drinks and explaining the menu thoroughly. And the food was just great, especially the gnocchi, scallop noodles, duck breast, and the very decadent cookie dough with ice cream dessert. We will definitely go back."

  • "The food and service were spectacular, as always. I am, however, concerned that with Billy Riddle leaving the quality of the food will drop. Only time will tell"

  • "I loved Ela!! Amazing! Awesome! Great service and awesome food!!! Loved the diver scallop noodles, the kale salad and my fish dishes!!"

  • "The entire experience at Ela was outstanding. The service could compare to the Four Seasons Fountain Room. The prix fixe was well worth it. Each plate was beautifully presented and the tastes diverse but fit together nicely."

  • "I'm a Chip Roman fan, but this restaurant needs help. It's been revamped since I was there last. Now, they have a somewhat confusing selection of little plates, special plates, entrees. I ordered their special fish cheeks and they were dry and tough, scallop noodles were fishy and unpleasant. Uninspired short ribs. We ordered their special bourbon old fashioned. Unfortunately, the cocktail was just too sweet. I asked if they could mix in a little more bourbon. Instead they took the drink, made me wait for a new one and finally brought me a new old-fashioned with NO sugar. Didn't get the new cocktail until the appetizers were finished. It was downhill from there, you just can't recover from that type of dining experience."

  • "Great food with unique dishes. All menu items were delicious.. Even the ones with (what seemed like) odd pairings. The restaurant itself is very cool inside, sort of dark with interesting lighting. Cocktail list has some unique offerings but all were delicious. Ela is definitely a foodie's dream"

  • "Possibly the best overall meal I've had in the past year. Our server, Jess, couldn't have been better. Loved the restaurant itself, elegant and homey. My friend (a chef from another city) and I ordered the $45 tasting menu, and ordered one of their Monday 1/2 price bottles of wine. I had the monkfish, lobster tagliatelle, and the duck. The duck was a bit underseasoned for me, but otherwise spot on. I tried some of my friend's dishes, the whipped foie gras, the meatball, and a striped bass dish. All were very good. Perhaps the best part for me was a throwback to something I used to eat long ago. They had a bowl of warmed cookie dough with ice cream on top, and it was fantastic. My friend remark "Amazing". Can't wait to go back."

  • "The food was fantastic and the service couldn't have been better. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, there are serious food and drinks being served here. Wait staff is accommodating, incredibly knowledgeable and take great care in structuring your meal. Would highly recommend."

  • "The food was amazing! We got the 4 course tasting menu and were so full. Loved this place. The scallop noodles were very good I've never had anything like that before."

  • "The menu is very complicated with the result leading to a $165 bill for two people with 2 drinks each AND leaving hungry."
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "The portions were small, but after 4 courses, we were quite full. The food was inventive, but still very tasty. The staff was incredibly attentive. I would rate the service as the most notable feature."

  • "Food was very good from start to finish, chef and staff were very accommodating."

  • "Interesting menu. A couple of dishes were lacking in flavor but the bartender makes the best old fashioned I've had in Philly yet. Great service. Try the beet tartare...I know, just try it."

  • "Be ready for "urban" crowded dining - not much space between or around the tables! The menu is known for creativity and does deliever. We tried a lot of "seconds" and all were tasty. I have to admit that none quite achieved the amazing brilliance of Jose Andres at the Bazaar in LA which was what it felt we'd get from these other reviews. A few came close however. But what is served is fun and great and worth a visit. One note of concern - their Wine list is way too small and lacking for a high profile restaurant!"
