Diner Reviews
  • "An excellent experience; best Mexican food outside of NYC!"

  • "I usually have dinner at El Vez, but last week , I met a friend for lunch. We sat outside, which was nice since the weather was not too hot. The guacamole was wonderful as always and I tried the mahi mahi tacos ,which were also very good."

  • "I have been here several times & it's always fabulous. Great food, stellar service & amazing blood orange margaritas!"

  • "The food was very good and the guacamole was the best either of us ever had! The noise level was high and they need some acoustic tiles on the ceiling. Decor nice. We had to wait for a table even though we had reservations but it was only about 15min wait. Yummy Margaritas and some creative options."

  • "You have to try the Guacomole and the Rojas Sangria!"

  • "We went here for my birthday dinner. Myself and 3 friends. It was delicious! It was a little loud but overall very good. Great margaritas!!"

  • "We traveled from Boston with our whole trip centered around going to El Vez for dinner! This is my 3rd time and my husbands first. It is now one of his favorite places!"

  • "El Vez is my go-to when I have friends or family visiting from out of town. I know the food will be good and it's a fun atmosphere. I definitely recommend one of their guacamole appetizers, and you won't go wrong with any entree selection."

  • "We ate at El Vez twice during our visit to Philly. I'd recommend reservations, even during the week. Seating at the bar is also alot of fun but it can even be a wait for that, depending on the hour. El Vez is a true experience, and not your average Mexican restaurant at all. The blood orange margaritas and the steak nachos are the best I've ever had. The guacamole is also very good, although it's a little pricey for the amount you get and just a little too creamy. Don't get me wrong, I'd still order it again, it's delicious. The decor is bright and the entire space is really energetic. Love the bicycle over the bar, it's the signature piece. Highly recommend eating at El Vez, for a fun, foody experience."

  • "The food is good but not really traditional Mexican. I would visit again- one day."

  • "Went here after the parade downtown and there were plenty of seats. I always get the chopped salad. It's perfect for lunch. You can't skip out on the guacamole either. So a perfect meal to me is a cocktail (i love the guava mojito), guacamole (share with a friend or 2) and the chopped salad. I know it might just seem like a salad but it's one good salad. I wish the chips weren't so fried. There is always too much oil on them. Definitely could be improved."

  • "Though a bit on the loud side, that's to be expected in a Friday night on a holiday weekend. The food is always great here, the drink selection is awesome, and the service is what you would expect from a Steven Starr establishment."
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "Loved the energetic vibes...very fun place...but the food did NOT live up to the hype... Everything I had was bland bland bland...guacamole, enchiladas, everything was bland. Even the sangria tasted watery...I'd go again but just for the atmosphere and margaritas, not the food... Also our server seemed very much in a rush...not only in coming(taking our orders) but also in going (rushing off before we could complete our sentence)..."

  • "Awesome place... Hint: You can always order the Tacos al Carbon for 2... for 1."

  • "My boyfriend and I came with another couple. We've been to El Vez before and enjoyed it- they hadn't been before and loved it. The food was delicious- we always split the Macho Nachos & then each got the Mahi tacos & the blood orange marg. (The Mahi tacos & blood orange marg are my go to). Everything was delicious as always. Our server was fantastic, helpful, animated and made some good recommendations for the couple who hadn't dined there before. The one downside is that it is VERY loud- to the point where you kinda have to yell to be heard- but the food is so good and then atmosphere is great so we always go back!"

  • "This is a fun restaurant. They have the best (blood orange) margaritas and fantastic guacamole. The dinners we ordered were good, but not as outstanding as these other things. Highly recommend!"

  • "Food felt authentic and well presented! There aren't many Mexican restaurants, but this one did not disappoint :)"

  • "The food was invariable. The guava mojitos were so good! The guac with mango has nice and buttery touch with a chunky bite to it. The tacos sampler was good. the sea bass one was delicious because it has this wonderful creaminess from the sweet potatoes puree that perfectly compliments the flakiness of the grill sea bass. The carne asada, chicken and pork did not stand out. We also had the enchiladas, both of us found the enchiladas to be on the saltier side so we just did not touch it after the first bite. My husband was very happy when I told him that I am taking him to El Vez on his birthday. He was disappointed with the enchiladas and the service."

  • "What a terrible experience we had at el Vez! Our reservation was at 830 for a party of 6. We got there and checked in at 7 for a table outside and they said they would let us know as soon as our table was ready. We waited and waited until finally at 9pm they sat the 6 of us at an extremely small table and told us the table next to us was about to leave and when they did would push the 2 tables together to gives us adequate space. Out of space here so I'll continue the review online elsewhere."

  • "Went with a group of five for lunch. We are a group of middle-aged women-not the typical El Vez diners. We ordered the shrimp tacos. It was great that they were served altogether so that it seemed like more. Everything was delicious."

  • "Fantastic everything. Not one bad thing to say about it."

  • "Margaritas are it but we enjoyed memorable wine The best item is guacamole There are about 10 choice The vegetables win Not for those on a diet"

  • "Love that is casual, however you are still out for dinner and it really feels they want you to get out. Hostess walked the table every 2 minutes with no discretion to update all " status" of the tables. Food was good, but deserts were not, do not go for a special occasion I wrote our friends farewell on our notes, told the hostess and still no one even acknowledge it. Great spot for margaritas and casual food to hang out with group of friends, but thats about it"

  • "The Guava mojito was amazing! The food was also decent, but one of the best bars!"
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "The noise level in this restaurant is almost deafening but the food is always fabulous which is why I keep coming back. I love the photo booth and the guac. They used to make it table side but that doesn't seem to be happening anymore but either way the bazooka Guac is the way to go, I dream about it, its so yummy."

  • "Make this a must when in Philly. Best guacamole in the US."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "I think we had a pretty good meal overall. The guacamole was very fresh. The taco portions were super small for $11-$12. They only give you two tacos as a part of that, but the mahi mahi ones were very tasty. The brunch chilaquiles were good, maybe a bit salty. I think overall the meal was above average but overall I'd expect more from Steven Starr."

  • "I took my girlfriend for a diner there and we really enjoyed it. The guacamole was very good with the crab. Im a big guacamole person and that tops any I have ever had before. I will recommend this restaurant and will return there zoo for dinner. I waited weeks for a reservation that fit my schedule and yes it was well worth it. Great for couples."

  • "If you love guacamole, you MUST try one or more of the offerings at El Vez! My friend and i enjoyed a sampler of three varieties and we LOVED all of them! We also shared a platter of two soft-shell crab tempura tacos (a special of the day) and the white sangria, which was delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal! The service was terrific and the decor is really fun. The ONLY negative is that the noise level is pretty high due to the hard surfaces everywhere in the restaurant. But I will still go back at my soonest opportunity!"

  • "The food was outstanding!!! We ordered the Nachos Mama, Flautas, Fundido and Chicken Tacos between 3 people. Quantity was perfect and the taste was phenomenal!!! I got the Guava Margarita and my sister got the Guava Mojito and we loved our drinks. The best part was that the drinks are really really strong!!! I loved this place!!! the only downside was that the noise level was too high for my liking. At the end of the night, we probably ended up paying $30-$35 per head and I thought that was really reasonable for the kind of food, drinks and ambiance! Will definitely be going back!!!"

  • "The food is excellent. We always get the guacamole with the goat cheese, Bazooka I believe it is called. Perfect for when you are going to a show. Fun atmosphere."

  • "Great time, great food and drinks, but the guacamole was outstanding! Photo booth awesome idea!"

  • "Guac is always excellent, pitchers are a great idea, and the food is good too. Gets a little warm inside in the summer but otherwise great."
    Dined on 6/16/2014
  • "Our last trip to El Vez was enjoyable and the food, drinks and service were on par with our previous experiences. The noise level is energetic, so it's not a place for romantic or quiet conversation but they offer traditional mexican food with a flair. Get the premium Margarita would be my suggestion."

  • "we celebrated our anniversary, but were sat way to close to the group of 15 loud girls next to us (we shared a booth with a tiny space in between) we were supposed to get something for celebrating our anniversary, but did not get anything or was not recognized. I didnt say anything b/c it was supposed to be a surprise for my wife. The hostess never told us that we would receive a text when our table was ready and while we were standing right next to the hostess booth we waited for a while before i heard someone else say they got a text saying their table was ready, so i checked my phone and there was the text from minutes earlier. Overall, our meals were very good, but the setting was not great"

  • "They honored our reservation even though we were stuck in traffic and arrived half hour late. Food and service was excellent, but don't expect to have an intimate conversation, especially if someone has poor hearing!"

  • "Great atmosphere that was fun and clean with an amazing view and close to other great night spots."
