A word from El Vez New York
Tradition and innovation collide in a whirlwind of sight, sound and sabor at El Vez, STARR Restaurants’ exciting and inviting contribution to Lower Manhattan’s Battery Park City community.

Casual yet contemporary, El Vez celebrates the festive soul of Mexican and Mexican-American culture, a true south-of-the-border spirit that manifests itself in the restaurant’s attitude and atmosphere. The breathtaking space is a feast for the eyes with imaginatively designed dining areas, a large bar outfitted with a photobooth, a wrap-around landscaped patio for dining al fresco and a burrito bar for food on the go.

With deep roots in regional Mexican cooking, the menu is built around guacamoles, fundidos, ceviches, tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas made from scratch with authenticity in mind. Meanwhile, the bar offers a large selection of creative cocktails, signature margaritas and staggering selection of 150 mezcals and tequilas.

I went in with low expectations. Im originally from TX, and I currently live in California so needless to say, I've had my fair share of Mexican cuisine. I wouldn't call El Vez authentic, but I will say it was pretty darn good. Great flavor in all dishes we had and we left feeling satisfied. The bar scene appears to be pretty "happening" here. I could tell a lot of the suit types stop here after work. All in all, I would definitely come back here when I'm back in town.

El Vez is right in our neighborhood so we tend to go at least once a week. I recommend using the Open Table app and make a reservation ahead of time otherwise, you will wait anywhere between 15-mins in the loud noisy crowded bar area. This area right up front is crowded and often you will see servers holding huge trays of food over heads because of all the people. Service is alright. A few times our server came after 15 minutes of being seated. Other times there was a long wait for food. I'm sure this has to do with the fact it is prime dinner time, but it just seems like there are not enough staff to cover the tables thus a perfectly reasonable assumption that you can wait some time before being greeted by server. As stated before, the guacamole is sooo good. They bring a ton of it and a small basket of chips, so I suggest you ask for extra chips. Our favorite is the tacos for 2, we get grilled steak &'chicken and served with red, green sauce and tortillas. Such a good combination! You should try it!

I called El Vez twice to add to my reservation and they changed it without a problem. Group of 8, service was fast. Loved the cucumber mint margarita and the food was all delicious! Three tacos per order, great to share! Had a spacious rectangular table, would have preferred a booth but now I know for next time! Our waiter was friendly and even patient enough to take a group photo for us.

Really enjoyed this spot with some dinner with friends. Had several margaritas and shared many snacks. The Chorzo nachos were awesome, will return just for those. Fun spot and the food is tasty (especially for this area of the city). We will return frequently.

After agreeing that my party could have a drink at the bar the head hostess refused to give us a table as she decided that the drink at the bar had taken too long and she objected to us asking to be seated to eat. She was overtly and unecessarily rude to us. Hospitality is not the buzz word at this restaurant. We left and had a much more pleasant experience in the restuarant next door.

El Vez is a neighborhood gem! Very good service and the food is great. There are a few negatives: they charge for chips and salsa, guacamole is $14 and they offer only one type of frozen margarita (good luck detecting any alcohol in it). Overall I do recommend it!

Came with a group of five and we all enjoyed our meals (shrimp tacos, pork belly tacos, and fried fish tacos). Great, distinct flavors for each dish and an addictive salsa. Not huge portions but I would pick flavor over volume any day, and we weren't left hungry or anything. Very cute and comfortable seating, no wait on a Thursday for peak lunch hour. Friendly service.

  • Great Birthday Celebration

Our daughter has special needs and loves coming to NYC to celebrate her birthday. She loves Mexican food so we chose El Vez. She was given special treatment by the staff. Being from the Philadelphia suburbs we are familar with Steven Starr's restaurants so we expected a quality experience and we were not disappointed. The appetizers we ordered were fantastic. The entrees were excellent and arrived quickly after we informed our waitress that we were on a time schedule to get to a Broadway show. We would have left without dessert but were treated to a trio of ice creams with birthday candles complimentary from the manager. It was a wonderful evening. The food and service were first rate. We would highly recommend this restaurant.

I actually have been to the original El Vez in Philadelphia (all of Steven Starr's restaurants started in Philly, and all are excellent). I like the decor of the Philly restaurant that isn't carried through here - the decor is kind of "Mexican Elvis" in the Philly restaurant (get it? Elvis - El Vez?). Anyway, the decor here is fine friendly atmosphere. Food is excellent and pricing reasonable. The tortilla soup was excellent.

Food was fine -- oxtail enchiladas were quite good, but the guacamole and the chicken tacos were forgettable -- but the drinks were not good. The classic margarita tasted like it was made with well tequila, the guava margarita had barely a breath of alcohol, and the mezcala martini tasted off. For the price, definitely not worth it.

I've probably been to El Vez 20 times and it is hands down the best resturant in BPC. The food is very good, great ambiance and top notch service. Besides all that, it's one of the best priced resturants in the area. The nacho mama is awesome so are the tuna tartare tostadas. My wife always gets the Mahi Mahi tacos and loves them. I like to try different things but my favorite is probably the chicken dish that comes with the watermelon salad (can't think of the name). The house poblano hot sauce is soooo good. If you're a couple and looking for a go to date night spot this is the place. When the weather is nice they are always helpful in seating guests outside or wherever you'd like inside.

El Vez New York was terrific, but not quite what we were expecting. Having lived in Philly and dined at the El Vez there many times, we're accustomed to its slightly quirky decor/ambience and the menu's emphasis on shared plates. That said, the decor/atmosphere at El Vez New York is great (loved the wine glass trees behind the booths in the main dining room) in its own way, and the food was delicious. The classic margarita and guacamole are a must!

First We did arrive for our reservation but late cause my boyfriend had to work. Everything was great until the waitress came over and asked us if we something to drink or water. When my boyfriend refused she has such an attitude, she took forever to bring us anything. The guacamole was tasteless and we needed salt. She never came back, but I guess the manager saw us sitting not it, asked if everything was ok and I said it needed salt. He brought salt over and took it off our bill, after the food came and it was not the best. The rice and beans were under cooked, food just did not taste the best. I had better and a much cheaper place. My boyfriend asked for a refill and once again the waitress out of site. I had to force him to leave a tip.

Food very good; service a little wobbly with lots of misfires. Asked for second drink during dinner (after waiting 2 long for follow up). Received drink after dessert. Listed 2 birthdays when reservation was booked. Hostess asked about this when we were greeted. Nothing came of it after that. When finished with entrees, 3 separate service staff stopped to clear our plates; each time we asked to wrap 2 unfinished plates to go. The 3rd to ask was told she was the 3rd person asked to wrap up food for us. She did, w/ no other comment, though. Servers are appropriately friendly enough and somewhat attentive, but just seem to be distracted or not aware or alert.

Overall, good experience and food was ok. Wish the food had a little more flavor and kick for a Mexican restaurant. Once we sat down the waiter asked us if we wanted guacamole. We said yes but after we realized there are 3 kinds of guac on the menu and we weren't asked which kind. We were brought the standard which would have been fine if they had options to how spicy to make it. It was fresh but zero flavor. No kick, just avocado. Dos Caminos still wins. It was brunch, had the veggie scramble, again fresh but no taste. Should have asked for Tabasco or something. I piled on their salsa sauce that came with the chips. My friend had the chorizo scramble and loved it. Cocktails are good, but wish had been stronger for the price.
