A word from El Vez New York
Tradition and innovation collide in a whirlwind of sight, sound and sabor at El Vez, STARR Restaurants’ exciting and inviting contribution to Lower Manhattan’s Battery Park City community.

Casual yet contemporary, El Vez celebrates the festive soul of Mexican and Mexican-American culture, a true south-of-the-border spirit that manifests itself in the restaurant’s attitude and atmosphere. The breathtaking space is a feast for the eyes with imaginatively designed dining areas, a large bar outfitted with a photobooth, a wrap-around landscaped patio for dining al fresco and a burrito bar for food on the go.

With deep roots in regional Mexican cooking, the menu is built around guacamoles, fundidos, ceviches, tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas made from scratch with authenticity in mind. Meanwhile, the bar offers a large selection of creative cocktails, signature margaritas and staggering selection of 150 mezcals and tequilas.

Diner Reviews
  • "Food very good; service a little wobbly with lots of misfires. Asked for second drink during dinner (after waiting 2 long for follow up). Received drink after dessert. Listed 2 birthdays when reservation was booked. Hostess asked about this when we were greeted. Nothing came of it after that. When finished with entrees, 3 separate service staff stopped to clear our plates; each time we asked to wrap 2 unfinished plates to go. The 3rd to ask was told she was the 3rd person asked to wrap up food for us. She did, w/ no other comment, though. Servers are appropriately friendly enough and somewhat attentive, but just seem to be distracted or not aware or alert."

  • "El Vez is a good new tex-mex restaurant in the battery park area. The food was better than average for this type of low key relaxed place. Kids and young professionals were equally represented. Margaritas were good although our service this time was a bit slow"

  • "The food was good preferred the appetizers to the entrée I had the black bean enchiladas it was ok the nacho mama and the classic guacamole were fantastic though. And the drinks were really strong. Some of my guests had a problem with the heat so read the menu carefully. Definitely left full though and had a wonderful experience!"

  • "I love El Vez, it never fails to be an outstanding dining experience! El Vez makes the best margaritas, the guacamole and house made tortilla chips are delicious and the food is flavorful and exciting. The staff makes you feel so welcome and truly care that you are having a great time. Well done El Vez!"

  • "Overall, good experience and food was ok. Wish the food had a little more flavor and kick for a Mexican restaurant. Once we sat down the waiter asked us if we wanted guacamole. We said yes but after we realized there are 3 kinds of guac on the menu and we weren't asked which kind. We were brought the standard which would have been fine if they had options to how spicy to make it. It was fresh but zero flavor. No kick, just avocado. Dos Caminos still wins. It was brunch, had the veggie scramble, again fresh but no taste. Should have asked for Tabasco or something. I piled on their salsa sauce that came with the chips. My friend had the chorizo scramble and loved it. Cocktails are good, but wish had been stronger for the price."

  • "I had the watermelon and cucumber salad...awesome. as was the sunset guacamole. could have eaten anything on the menu. innovative combinations, all very tasty. Not your average mexican restaurant. Upscale and very large but multiple rooms so not overwhelming."

  • "The place is nice and all the staff was friendly and attentive. They answered all my questions and even gave me an earlier reservation. The Macho nachos were excellent as advertised. The rest of the meal was also enjoyable. I would certainly return for nachos and margaritas."

  • "Bar is separated from dine area which is all you need to be able to order your food. This is bc energetic and loud people also go there for dinner. Bar is the live pic of nyc. People chatting in the island sipping their margaritas, eating chips and lol. I was pleased to visit this place which ends to be around my place. It will place my happy hours"

  • "I wasn't blown away by the food but it was ok Chipotle style Mexican food (i.e., not real Mexican food). Sangria was watered down."

  • "I ordered the Holy Mole while my friends shared the Taco for 2. After the appetizers, which were very good (kale salad, bazooka guacamole), our entrees arrived and were all placed in the middle, with no explanation of what each plate was. Since my entree was hidden by the taco platter that my friends had ordered, I waited for my order thinking it was delayed. My friends thought the Mole dish was part of their taco platter so we were really clueless until the waiter finally showed up after 5-6 minutes to see how things were. When I mentioned I hadn't received my entree, he reached over and moved the mole dish from the other side of the table to me. He never asked if I wanted another beer. Very poor service overall."

  • "We had heard this place was good from others who lived in the neighborhood and it did not disappoint. The food was great - guacamole was some of the best I've had. Fish tacos too - grilled not friend which I love. Im pregnant so I especially appreciated the mocktail menu - never see that, and the drink I had was delicious (something with cucumber and mint - sort of like a virgin mojito). The kid's menu was better than most places - I gave my daughter the mahi bites and she loved them - I tasted them too and they were great. Service was wonderful - our waiter was so attentive. The place is big and loud, but it's a fun atmosphere."

  • "I do not normally get heartburn, but I had heartburn for 2 days after having the grilled fish tacos. Way too spicy and rough on the digestive system."

  • "I am not an expert on Mexican food, but the food was delicious, good sized portions and reasonably priced...service was attentive."

  • "We ate here with a our young child and friends. The service, seating and food are all five star. They were kid-friendly and treated us like royalty. The food came out quickly and was hot and high quality, very tasty; however, there was not much of it. Had we been advised by our server that sides are recommended we would have ordered a bunch of them and been fine."

  • "As a recently relocated Philly resident I was excited to try the NYC El Vez and my husband and I were impressed with the menu, food, staff, and atmosphere. The multi-room restaurant had so much energy and life when we walked in. We were surprised by the menu since it differs from the Philadelphia location, offering more small plates then entrees but still filling and delicious and so reasonable in price! Try their drinks too because they are super tasty."

  • "The food was great and the service was wonderful. However, it seems that some of the authentic part of Mexican cuisine was left off the menu. Perhaps the audience prefers Tex Mex."

  • "Great service... Room for improvement on the menu: 1. Add more mexican "classics" like fajitas, arroz con pollo, etc 2. Improve the dessert options... Add more chocolate 3. Wine List - Add more Spanish/Mexican/Latin American wines by the glass, rather than U.S. wines 4. Give a better wine pour... Seems like you are targeting 5 glasses per bottle... Charge another $2-$3 and make it 4 glasses per bottle."

  • "Our second time at El Vez. When we go again, I'll have to request a table outside. It's been 3 days since we were there and my ears are still ringing from the noise, especially the volume of the music (which the restaurant can control) and the conversation of excessive drinkers (which the restaurant cannot). The food is good but not better. The guacamole should be ordered but everything hot tastes prepared and reheated. I'll try a salad next time, but not anytime soon."

  • "So happy to have a Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood. El Vez is a fun, casual spot with great food and great drinks. Love their sangria! The servers are well versed in special dietary needs, for which I am grateful with respect to a gluten free diet. The food is very fresh and delicious. It is my "go-to" Mexican restaurant in BPC/Tribeca area."

  • "I came here with my husband and daughter for an early Sunday dinner. I heard good things about the restaurant before making the reservation, so I was looking forward to trying it. When I showed up, I was excited to find out that this was another kid friendly spot in the neighborhood with designated stroller parking and changing tables in both the women's AND men's bathrooms. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful with recommendations, and the food and drinks were great. We will definitely be back soon!"

  • "The food and drinks at El Vez were great which I expect at Stephen Starr restaurants and the menu had a good selection. The restaurant is super nice inside and service was very good. It is certainly not the Philly original, that place is much more fun and unique but I guess it goes with the areas they are in. I wish it just wasn't so far downtown!"

  • "I had a family group of 8 and we had a table in the back of the restaurant where it was a bit quieter. We had a great dinner and the service was very good. The noise level is intense though."

  • "El vez is a nice place in terms of the atmosphere however they need to offer more appetizers. The drinks seemed to be reasonably priced for the area but were a little weak on the alcohol."

  • "The ambiance and scene was fit for my birthday. It is really good for large groups (and if you're lucky enough you'll get a cool circle table)! The only bad thing I could think of to say for El Vez is that some items are a complete hit or miss (in regards to the correlation between price and portion size, all the food was stellar on it's own). For appetizers the Nacho Mama is huge and amazing as well, no need to add the chorizo. In regards to tacos I felt that the ones with seafood were lagging and barely had anything in them. My friend's mahi mahi taco was delicious but for $16 you expect a bit more fish. Overall, still with the meat for this place- in particular the steak for two. We didn't have room for dessert unfortunately."
