Diner Reviews
  • "I've been here a couple of times on lunch dates, and loved it both times. The food is spectacular (coming from someone who doesn't usually love Spanish food). The restaurant itself is really nice too. The service is good too. The waiter who helped us the first time was super awesome. I don't know his name but he responded well to a weird request we had, also did the desert bday candle thing. The woman the last time was good. Drinks took a little while to come out to us. But other than that she was really nice and on the ball. I know I'll be back again soon."

  • "Came here for dinner last weekend. Everything on the menu looked amazing, but we ended up going with guacamole to start and the scallops, shrimp, and enchiladas for the mains. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who is looking for delicious and interesting Mexican food at a trendy (yet unpretentious) spot! Can't wait to come back and try the brunch as well as the tacos!!"

  • "The chilaquiles were delicious and incredibly filling."

  • "Our experience started by having to wait 30 minutes past our reservation time to be seated. Our waitress got distracted by other servers dancing around in the bar and never returned after taking our appetizer and drink order. This put us at the mercy of food runners for any service. In the end we had to get up to grab a manager so we could get a check in order to go to another restaurant to complete our meal. The food we did have was fine, but it was the worst service experience I have ever had. I will say that once the manager was informed he was very helpful and nice."

  • "We booked a 5person table at 7pm on a saturday for my dad's 60th birthday. After arriving half an hour early, the hostess worked to seat us immediately (thanks!). We started with the large guacamole, with 3 salsas and bottomless bowls of chips. The open face quesadilla was a hit, served on a pizza tray and balanced by strips of mild chile and creamy cheese. Tacos were small (2 tiny soft corn tortillas) but well constructed, including octopus, stewed chicken and shrimp varieties, and the chicken enchiladas offered a more substantial plate. Drinks were a bit pricey, and the michelada was too smoky, but the wine was reasonable and the overall experience was a delight, including the attentive service."

  • "We were visiting Coral Gables for the weekend, and this was a truly spectacular find! The food is reasonably priced and excellent quality! The service was perfect. The atmosphere is great - the lighting, decor, ample room to move around, views of the kitchen, all is ideal. We will definitely return and highly recommend this to anyone out there"

  • "I will definitely be back once it gets warmer out to drink ALL the chile-rubbed mango margaritas I can handle. Other than that, I wasn't blown away by the food. Everything was good, but not amazing. The drinks though- THEY were the best."

  • "Classic Mexican dishes with foodie twists. The charred octopus tacos were incredible, as we're the lobster tacos but the sweet and delicious tamales really surprised me, as did the flavorful and yet understated tres leches desert. Delicious! Don't even get me started on what appears to be the largest selection of tequilas - and rare tequilas - in NYC. Well played, sir, well played!"

  • "great food! i love mexican food but nothing is worse than when the food is too heavy or greasy. Each dish we ordered was very well prepared, light, and (most importantly) very flavorful."

  • "Found El Toro Blanco on Open Table and it was only a short walk from Hampton Inn SoHo. It's a quaint neighborhood gem. Noise level is a little high - but it makes the place what it is and the atmosphere and ambiance are really nice. The food was wonderful - from lobster ceviche to charged octopus tacos to the chroizo fundido. If you are in SoHo, you should definitely give El Toro Blanco a try for lunch or dinner. Wonderful - and will go back!"

  • "On a cold night this place did very brisk business. The margaritas were exceptional, and while the noise level was very steep, that was due to the busy schedule. The service was great, not overwhelming at all and very attentive to our group. I'd highly recommend it."

  • "i loved it. they were friendly when we arrived because we were 15 minutes late. the service was great and most important, the food was fabulous. i can't wait to go back."

  • "Went to El Toro Blanco to take advantage of restaurant week brunch. Arrived about 5 minutes early for the reservation and was asked to sit at the bar while waiting for our table which would be ready "asap". Two drinks and about a half hour later we were seated. Appetizers came relatively promptly but then waited another 20 minutes for the entrees. In total, spent 2 hours and over $150 (including tip) for brunch."

  • "I can only speak for brunch but the food was just okay. We were seated almost half an hour past our reservation time and squeezed in this tiny corner. The waiter seemed confused and asked us several times to verify our order. Maybe this was all related to restaurant week so maybe we will try again when it's not restaurant week."

  • "I went with three friends during restaurant week. I had the pan roasted snapper. It was not fresh. I've had snapper at other restaurants and this was the first time that I found the snapper to be horrible. No one at my table raved about their food. Only I was completely disappointed. We all agreed the chocolate cake was on the dry side. The service was great from the time we showed up until our departure. We won't return to this restaurant because there are so many better places. I've never been disappointed at Fonda."

  • "We were treated to a tequila tutorial with our tequila flight and were treated to sample extra tequilas after our meal. The food, the tequila, and the service amounted to a great night with a friend. Highly recommended"

  • "Excellent customer service, we were inform of how soon our food was coming etc. Service was fast and efficient, they gave us enough time to talk w/o being rushed. When we asked for the check...it was there promptly. Will visit again,"

  • "I love quality Mexican food and this is it. Margs are absolutely delicious, interesting twists and not all ice with little liquor. Guac is great, love that they give the option of Veggie Sticks! Shrimp and Octopus tacos were perfect and ceviche was so fresh! I have found a lot of great Mexican in this city but El Toro Blanco is at the top of my list."

  • "Some of the best Mexican food I've had in NYC. I've been frequenting a wide array of Mexican restaurants from fine dining to wholes in the wall in NYC and this is by far one of the best I've had. The guacamole and chicken tacos were amazing!"

  • "The drinks and dessert were great!!! The chef catered to my gluten allergy which was great. I wish the portions were larger. Our waiter was very helpful and knew what he was talking about. I would def go again."

  • "Don't expect Mexican food or you'll be gravely disappointed. Not even a credible dulce de leche (condensed milk briefly heated is NOT dulce de leche! The light beige color should have given the cooks some indication.) Greasy churros put an end to an insipid, uninspired meal."

  • "Waited 45 minutes for a table that was reserved. No real apology. Forgot drinks/orders a few times. Much better places to spend your money."
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "Had a selection of small tacos, chicken was my favorite. The chorizo fundido is the best I've ever had."
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "This is not a funky ethnic find, it's a fairly mainline, moderate to expensive, popular destination in an upscale neighborhood that happens to have really good Mexican fare. The drinks are good, the guacamole is good, the octopus tacos are good. It's not adventurous or inventive or risk-taking, but it doesn't scream business model like so many of the soulless concepts around the city that trump anything authentic while passing for Mexican cuisine. 7 Iguanas."

  • "I enjoyed each and every part of my meal, from the appetizer to the dessert, and my drink that was recommended by the polite waitstaff as well. The person I was dining with also enjoyed his entire meal."

  • "I think this is a fun, casual restaurant and great mexican food with some interesting twists. Also priced very reasonably. The drinks were fantastic and I would highly recommend getting a special plate. The salsa trio and guacamole is also fantastic. The service leaves a lot to be desired- but didn't ruin a good time."

  • "The tequila selection is definitely one of the best ones in all of new York City. The food leaves some to be desired but it's a great place. Great atmosphere. Music was great."

  • "Food and service were both much better than they have to be. This is an excellent addition to NY's burgeoning high-end Mexican scene."

  • "A bit pricey for the portion size, but that is to be expected for the neighborhood. Great food, strong service, and nice soundtrack. Wonderful tequila selection. Try the goat tacos; you will not be sorry."

  • "I don't get it. Food is so/so at best. Scene is OK but not anywhere near what the buzz is. I can't think of many Mexicans in NYC with worse food."

  • "It took a while to seat us, but the second we sat down they brought over shots and chips with guacamole. The service was GREAT, the GF options were GREAT, and I look forward to going back again soon!"

  • "What a fantastic restaurant - one of the best on the NY food scene for sure. From the moment we stepped in when the maitre'd remembered our names, to the friendly server, knowledgeable barman and excellent food - this one is definitely one of the best finds I've made in years. The buzz was great and the food just terrific - I am a vegan and they catered for me superbly with the most amazing tacos and then a salad to die for whilst my guest couldn't stop talking about the great quality beef he was served. At the end we had a personal thanks from the manager. A winner!"
