I always get the Short Rib Chili Colorado. The meat is very tender and there is plenty of food. Sometimes the service can be a little slow, but they are friendly.

We ordered off the menu, although the buffet looked good. Great chile relleno, rice and beans the usual. Carne asada quesadilla was excellent. Bean dip to start was tasty. Server was terrific.

My friends and I went to El Patron for lunch, as we were craving Mexican food and I've enjoyed El Patron before, but our experience this time wasn't up to par. The restaurant ran out of avocados (not joking) so we couldn't get table side guacamole service. Then they forgot to give us silverware. Then they brought my friend the wrong tacos. And finally, after offering to comp the tacos, they initially still appeared on the bill. The staff couldn't have been nicer, and the food was good, but there were way too many mistakes. How do you run out of avocados at lunchtime when you're a restaurant known for table side guacamole? Someone was asleep at the helm.

We had reservations for 8:30 and checked-in at 8:25 when the hostess found our reservation and told us to just hold on a few minutes. We checked in again at 8:50 about ready to leave. The other hostess found our reservation again and said just a few minutes. 5 minutes later the hostess called another name for 2 (we were for 2) and I stepped in to ask her what was going on. She seated us immediately at least. The service was slow and food was fine. The price of margaritas is the only positive aspect I can find about this place.

Menu was very interesting and had a lot of items that we want to go back and try. The food came out quickly, hot and flavorful. The homemade tortillas were delicious. The server was way too busy and the restaurant wasn't even full! We will be back to try the food and hope the service was just an off night.

We were in the area to go to another restaurant that had a long wait so we ended up here. We were glad we did! The menu is not traditional "Mexican" food but has some interesting and elevated choices. We were happy with our meals, were seated promptly and the margaritas (also interesting) were great. We will definitely be back!

we came to the restaurant in december for the first time and were happy to find a new mexican place to call our own. we brought a friend this weekend and saw that the menu had changed considerably. it seemed much smaller, more limited and not as appealing. it is apparent that they are going for a different look and feel. i believe they have missed the mark. it no longer has the appeal of a family restaurant.with familiar options. they fancy themselves to be more upscale and current with dishes such as fried pork skins as an appetizer. good luck. with poor service and the menu changes...we will not be back any time soon. too bad though...the chips are freshly made and delicious. but chips alone does not a successful restaurant make!

I'm from AL, and we don't have many places with "authentic" Mexican, but this place hit the spot! Our waiter was very friendly and helpful, as was the rest of the staff. The food was delicious; everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Their margaritas were great too! If I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely go back!!

We hoped to have a great New Year's Eve, but instead we spent $220 for a very unpleasant experience. We were told they had a "New Year's special" for 4, 8 or 12. It was six of us so we got the special for 4 and two of us ordered from the regular menu. It was $130 for the special. which consisted of two appetizers, a dessert, and a glass of cheap champagne. $130 for this! The appetizers were supposed to be a choice of beef, chicken, or potato taquitos, but they did not have any potato or another choice. The menu had a "vegetarian" section, but when I ordered the vegetarian soup, I was informed their menu was changing the next day, so they didn't make the soup any more. The fish was dried, the meat hard, the service bad! Left by 11.

my husband and i have been looking for a new mexican restaurant... and i do believe we found it! i had noticed el patron recently and we went there on sunday night. it was very good. the chips are freshly made...you can see it for yourself at the women hard at work making fresh tortillas! they offer vegetarian bean dip along with the regular one which has chorizo as an ingredient. very delicious! there is a vegetarian menu as well . the only downside was the margarita which we ordered... it was a strawberry blended cocktail and we sent it back as it was bitter. we stuck with water and ice tea. i would try a drink again next time though. hopefully it was a fluke! the place is clean and bright and open and welcoming. enjoy!!!!

There were 4 of us. We had 2 pitchers of margaritas (rocks) & the pitcher was 90% full of rocks(ice). So they tasted strong but had little flavor other then alcohol. I asked for the "grilled" fish tacos and two were fried. And they served white rice. Huh? And I had maybe 1 tablespoon of black beans. Such small amounts of the cheap sides was not expected. The chicken fajitas had very little flavor. The chili Colorado had good flavor but grisly. Our waiter even told us he didn't want to bring us our 2nd basket of chips cuz he didn't want us to fill up and not eat. ?? Surely with $50 of margaritas alone we shouldn't have been told this. And lastly, if you come Friday night you need to leave by 8:10 or you won't hear a word over the band.

El Patron has become our Mexican restaurant of choice. The menu gives a wide variety of choices and everything we have had on the many occasions we have been there has been very good. The margaritas are excellent and there must be at least 20 varieties. We usually make an Open Table reservation and it is always honored on time no matter how many people are waiting.

El Portal returned to Tarzana with a totally redesigned room but retained the very high quality of its offerings. This iteration has integrated the bar into the restaurant rather than treating it as an outpost or service bar. The range of offerings will satisfy most tastes and their prices are quite reasonable. Service was excellent but perhaps a bit too fast. We were in and out in less than one hour and, although we wanted to relax and sip our margaritas the food came out very quickly.

I must have gone on screaming kid night, because there were several kids with ear piercing shrieks, which were disturbing to say the least. That aside, I have been here twice and both times were just okay. The vegetarian fajitas had lots of veggies, but at least a third of it consisted of potatoes which I don't like in my fajita. Yes, the fajitas were reasonable at $13, but I have had much better at Sol y Luna. The decor is pleasant, but not as nice as Sol y Luna. Most of the items on the menu are reasonably priced, but they do have several specialty dishes which are pricey.

We went the first week of this restaurant's opening, and we did not like it. We decided to give it a second try a day or so ago, and we were delighted. We made a reservation through OpenTable without a hitch. Seated outside in front of a TV (Dodger game), which was great. True, the whether was just great, but so was the good and service. They served us two separate packages of corn tortillas and they stayed hot throughout our dinner, and we even took it home. Best tasting tortillas I ever had. The fajita was as good as I have had and the portions of everything were too much -- I will order less in the future. Come enjoy a nice evening of service and food.

The food is great, although every time I order a virgin piña colada they always serve it differently. The last time is was more watery than usual and no cherry :( but still a good restaurant. Just beware that since the bar is the heart you might hear a lot of profanity from the bar clients, hard to enjoy dinner with them. Go with groups of friends to have fun but not much as a dinner spot for couples and families.

Our second visit to this Tarzana Mexican restaurant, and I enjoyed the food. We had guacamole made at our table to start--very good-- and I had chicken mole enchiladas, which were excellent. Large portions, too. My wife had a beef tostada, which she thought was good. She ordered flan for dessert, which I liked more than she did, but we weren't very hungry at that time. I also like their horchata drink; I would try this restaurant for some very good Mexican food.

The restaurant looked great upon arrival with outdoor patio dining and mariachi band playing. However, food was not good. The chicken in my chicken taco was so chewy and tough that it tasted like it had been microwaved many times. My son's steak burrito had very little steak, and massive amounts of rice (filler) that had a strange flavor. My daughter ordered the taquito appetizer with everything on the side. Nothing came on the side so they offered to fix it. It took over 15 minutes before her food was returned and my son and I were done eating. Hate to say it, but it's hard to mess up Mexican food. We won't be returning despite the fun atmosphere and great patio dining.
