  • "I went with 5 friends for Sunday brunch. The group found the french toast and huevos rancheros were delicious, as was the hibiscus drink (which we call sorrel in the Caribbean). We sat in the back area and it wasn't crowded or loud for Sunday brunch. The staff was very pleasant. It would have been nice if there was an outdoor area, as the weather was summery."

  • "The food was better than most Mexican restaurants. The staff is attentive, it's a cozy restaurant, and the prices are reasonable."

  • "Great neighborhood find with authentic Mexican cooking. I brought a colleague here twice - she is originally from Mexico but lives in Europe now and can't get authentic Mexican. She is really impressed with the cooking - especially the tacos al pastor! - and now looks forward to visiting again on her trips to NY."

  • "Excellent service from the start. Manager called to info us it was going to be noisy that day due to world cup events. Accommodated us the entire time we were there and everyone was very friendly. Excellent choice!"

  • "We went here for a celebration. The food was delicious, but the loud music made it hard to carry on conversation."

  • "Delicious food and great service. Restaurant is a little small and needs some updating but waiters couldn't be nicer and food is plentiful and reasonable. "

  • "A great Mexican restaurant. I live about 15 blocks south and figure that I would give it a try because it had 1000 points. The brunch was great. Thank you. "

  • "This restaurant isn't your typical Mexican restaurant. No refried beans, rice and heavy sauces. Very creative menu and cooking. Great daily specials, one of which is always a fresh fish. Excellent cocktail choices. The smoke cucumber margarita was a standout. I've eaten there three times now and as I continue to explore the menu I keep finding pleasant surprises."

  • "You feel as if youre in some little mexican town. The decor, the music, the waitstaff all have that flavor. The food is not your typical Americanized Tex Mex type of food - it has authentic Mexican quality and flavor."

  • "This place is the re-incarnation of a small neighborhood bistro with classic Mexican food. There is a lot more decoration and it is bigger, as is the neighborhood is becoming gentrified, but the food is still the same. Very good, very classic, with gems hidden between the normal taco and enchilada favorites."

  • "I needed a place for a celebratory business lunch in East Harlem. It had to be in the low 100's. Not so easy. I came upon the reviews for El Paso and took a chance. It was great. Everyone ordered from the prix fix lunch menu. The food was excellent. Very fresh ingredients. The service was attentive and quick. I would make a trip to this neighborhood again, just to go back to El Paso."

  • "The food and service were a nice surprise. The neighborhood used to be predominantly Puerto Rican, so it was a surprise to find other ethnic restaurants in the area, but this Mexican restaurant was a real treat!"

  • "It seems I made a reservation at the wrong El Paso. I thought I was making it at the restaurant on 116th Street, between 2nd and 3rd. So, this review is for that restaurant. I always enjoy it there. Only have had lunch as I work in the neighborhood. In the warm months, I eat at the back in the "outdoors." Always good food and service."

  • "My boyfriend and I had plans that fell through and we had to scramble to find a spot for dinner in the Harlem area. The food was very very good, we got steak and I got the salmon dish which was very flavourful. The front room was very loud and lively, but they sitted us in the back room which was so so so quiet. We LOVED it."

  • "My sister and her family came to visit and it gave me a completely different take on the experience of eating out. Had I been with only adults, I probably would have given this a higher rating -- except in the area of service which was painstakingly slow on any scale. The food was actually VERY good, but there were only spicy options. We ordered chips and salsa for the table and the salsa was spicy. We asked for a non-spicy salsa, there was nothing available. My 6-yr-old nephew ordered chicken enchiladas and the tomatillo sauce was spicy, though he did like the rice and beans. At least when I ordered queso for the table the waiter was able to get the kitchen to leave out the poblano peppers. All said, I would go back with grownups!"

  • "Duck was yummy. Steak was very good. Generally, I'm not a fan of tamales but theirs is very tasty and I totally loved it! The mango margarita was good to. Topped dinner with lava cake. Yummmmy! Other times, we tried the octopus soft taco. Also a very good choice!"

  • "Terrible bland brunch. The lunch entrees at other tables smelled great and people looked like they were enjoying, Sangria had no fruit. Instead it was lemon rind in wine punch. Regrettable experience. Will not be returning."

  • "El Paso is a destination spot. Beyond being in a no man's land and not having much competition, the restaurant is a go-to place because the food is so good. Based on authentic Mexican recipes, the ingredients and ultimate taste are on the gourmet side. The cocktails feature a subtle and creative touch. For instance, there's one drink that features fresh watermelon (out of season & it was still good), coconut-infused Herradura and chile piquin. Not too spicy, but just enough to offset the sweetness of the melon and the under taste of coconut. The guacamole was perfection -- and at the level of spiciness that we requested. And, speaking of spice, there are some pretty hot entrees, but the waiter gives fair warning."

  • "We really enjoyed ourselves. Restaurant is creatively appointed with ethnic artwork, and the music chosen really enhanced the ambiance. Passion fruit Chihuahua Margarita wowed me... just had to order a second. Entrees were delicious, and the dessert flan absolutely rocked. This spot is a Harlem gem. Can't wait to return."

  • "My fiancé and I made reservations here to have our mothers meet for the first time. They make great cocktails, the chicken soup appetizer which most of the table ordered thought it was bland. The main course everyone loved. Nice bar area and dinning area as well. I would definetely come here againand recommend it to others."

  • "My foodie group did not know what to expect. After waiting hours literally for a game show and being exhausted, this was a VERY welcoming experience. The staff was friendly, service was excellent and the food was one of the BEST Mexican cuisine I have ever tasted. I don't like burning hot food and informed the waiter. He made an ample suggestion of a divine dish with huge shrimp and black beans and rice that was DIVINE with superb seasonings. It was served with delicious warm flatbread Top if off with a mango margarita, and all is right with the world......LOL!!"

  • "I have often gone to the smaller El Paso across the street and have now tried the restaurant three times. It's been with mixed results. This past Sunday 5 of us had brunch. I was the only one that was very happy with my food - chilaquiles with tilapia - which was excellent. All others in my group were "meh" or in one case, the quesadilla dish actually tasted stale to her! The service wasn't the best. Our waitress said she'd "had better days" and it wasn't easy to get her attention. They still have the best flan, and I will be willing to give them another visit. But the other four guests, I fear they won't return."

  • "went for lunch, very slow service. it took over 45 mins to make 3 tacos. the waiter forgot/did not put in one of our orders. there was only 5 people in our group and we all ordered the lunch special, you'd think it would be a quick affair but it dragged on for an hour and a half. it took 45 mins for the food, and i had to ask 3 times for the check when we were finished."

  • "We had several great experiences at El Paso. Newish to East Harlem, we keep finding all kinds of wonderful places to eat and discover. The wonderful Poet's Den Theater is nearby and we have a bite before or after. El Paso Restaurant is one of the few places I've been in NYC where you are greeted with smiles, the water glasses are refilled constantly, the waitstaff is present during the entire meal. Service in NYC's moderate priced restaurants has gone down the tubes, but you can be assured El Paso is on top of it. Authentic South of the border food with a splash of creativity makes it a place we will visit again and again!!"

  • "Was looking for a fun authentic Mexican restaurant to celebrate Cinco De Mayo with my boyfriend, and decided on El Paso based on the open table reviews. So glad we came! The atmosphere was fun and festive. The restaurant is bigger than it appears and although it was extremely crowded because of the holiday, we were seated promptly at 7:45 (which was our reservation time). Our server was extremely pleasant and kept the drinks coming. The menu looked amazing so we ordered 4 different appetizers to try a little of everything-- and they were all delicious!! especially the suckling pig..YUM! Dinner was the chicken mole & red snapper--both were fantastic! And before we left we were given free shots of tequila to toast the holiday! Loved it!"

  • "My experience at El Paso was more then stellar. My bestfriend and I were in desperate need of good food after moving into our new apartment all day and El Paso, was what the doctor prescribed. The cocktails are delicious, tacos were authentic, and the service couldn't have been better. If you live uptown stop missing out and go to El Paso."

  • "Only the food works here. We ordered a drink and the bartender chose to schmooze with a couple at the bar so our order took about 10 minutes. The waitress kept trying to take our food order, but we wanted the drinks first. When we ordered, I asked the waitress about a particular word that described the dish I was ordering. She said it was how the food was prepared. I knew that, I wanted more detail. She didn't know. The food was fantastic. My husband had the pork carnitas and there was so much pork leftover he asked for a to-go bag and also asked if the chef could put a little more sauce with the leftovers. He was told he would have to pay for another whole entree to get the sauce. Really?????? We will never go back."

  • "Though we had previously eaten at this establishment about three times, our latest experience will be our last. Many years since we have felt this unwelcome at a NYC restaurant. My wife, arriving first, was ignored at the door. While the patrons seated on either side of our table were afforded the usual, standard attentiveness, I and my wife waited 20 minutes to put in our main course order. We were surprised to hear other patrons being told that there were specials; no such info was given to us. We will not be back. If El Paso does not want our money, then fine. We hope the management understands we will be telling all our friends & colleagues to avoid El Paso's retro attitide."

  • "Interesting place. Good for groups. I would say that the food was a little bland for what I think of as Mexican food in NYC but it was def edible. Drinks are strong."

  • "Met up with friends that brought their baby out and they were able to give us a table where we could park the stroller...awesome. I expected chips and salsa on the table but they don't do that...what gives? We ordered guacamole and asked if we could get a little salsa and were then charged $3.95 which I thought was just a silly upcharge for a Mexican restaurant. The chicken enchiladas were ok, my husband loved his duck dish, and our friend got the fish tacos that looked amazing but should be paired with rice and beans or something to make it look more like an entree. The boys said the margs were good and had a couple rounds. Overall, it was good but I still will call Maz Mezcal my go to for Mexican on the UES/"
