A word from El Parador
El Parador Café was founded in 1959; it is the oldest and most authentic Mexican restaurant in New York, celebrating its 50th year in business. Carlos Jacott launched the original establishment, first located on 2nd Avenue and 31st Street. The restaurant has been lauded for having the best Margaritas by The New York Press and the best Ceviche by The New York Times. The torch has now been passed onto Jose "Alex" Alejandro, a 1994 graduate of The French Culinary Institute, who continues to grow the restaurant’s following by offering an excellent menu, world class bar & lounge and warm atmosphere. El Parador is dedicated to culture and hospitality. Many of the customers, dubbed “El Paradorians,” first met each other at the restaurant. The wonderful ambiance and cuisine has made El Parador Cafe NYC's favorite Mexican Restaurant, voted #1 by Open table and, once again, named a Bib Gourmand winner by the Michelin Guide for great value. Diner Reviews
  • "My boyfriend and I come here circa 4 times a month, both together and to entertain friends. Why? Great guac and chips, perfect simple margaritas (and frozen margaritas!) and the best value lobster salad you'll find in Mahattan. It has a wonderful, local restaurant atmostphere and laid back style. I love it. Pedro served our group of four on Saturday and he was by far our favourite waiter so far: very attentive and entertaining, thanks Pedro!"

  • "We had a delightful dinner. They gave us a corner booth which was very romantic. We had fish and shrimp. Excellent salsa and warm chips to start. The flavours of each dish were amazing. Everything was cooked perfectly. I tried two of their premium tequilas after dinner. I was amazed at the complexity and layers. The service was very good as well. Good wine list with modest prices. We had a truly outstanding Argentinian chardonnay. The restaurant was packed and I can see why. Highly recommended."

  • "Very good restaurant! Much better than expected. The portions are large. With an appetizer, we could have easily shared! It is not your average Mexican restaurants. Favors deliciously different, pleasing presentation."

  • "I had eaten at the restaurant on a less busy day but came there on Saturday night. Very packed. Waiter took a year for food and never came back to the table. Probably just a bad night. Liked it before."

  • "After reading the review in the Zagart for this restaurant, I travelled all the way from Connecticut to enjoy their food. It was a wasted evening, since the food was nothing special."

  • "We love coming here most Friday nights. The margaritas are great and well priced, as well as the food. The small taco tray is a good share dish. I had the BBQ spare ribs that were a delicious surprise and the wife had the chilean sea bass special that she loves. Had lunch too recently and the enchiladas were very good. Go!"

  • "I really enjoyed this spot! I stumbled upon it as my friends and I wanted to go to a bar in the same area and also wanted Mexican for dinner. Honestly, having dinner here was the highlight of the night. The ambiance was great -- romantic and soft decor that both groups and couples can enjoy. We tried the "house" margarita and it was decent, they have a full bar so if you aren't a fan of tequila, you can still get a drink. Their SALSA was delicious, and it stole the show with it's freshness and a hint of spiciness. They had a separate vegetarian menu with limited options but the best part was that you can order anything off the menu [Mexican] and they will whip it up for you. Overall, a great experience. I will be going back!"

  • "We've been dining here for well over ten years. El Parador have never disappointed us. This is sophisticated Mexican cuisine that is served in a sophisticated yet relaxed manner. The dining room has a rustic charm that transforms to the diner to a quieter, calmer energy than that outside the front door! Go."

  • "This is a good Mexican place but not great. He atmosphere was the best part. It was packed and lively but not suffocating. Well appointed and loud. This isn't the place for a quiet, romantic dinner. There was a good food selection but I wouldn't call it "traditional Mexican" at all. Still, great choice for dinner."

  • "Had a wonderful time the other night at El Parador! Not only was the food delicious but the staff was outstanding. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "El Parador never disappoints. First, the chicken mole is on a par with that of Oaxaca! What else is there to say. Deep, dark, with a blend of low key spices -- wow. Second, every type of enchilada is perfection. Guacamole is lovely. Chile relleno so tasty. Frozen and traditional margaritas are also great. The service is elegant yet at the same time friendly. It is worth the trip to this neighborhood. You will not find this level of Mexican food anywhere else."

  • "This slightly out of the way, authentic Mexican hits all the right notes! The service is warm and friendly, the food is exceptionally good and the ambience is sublime! We loved it and will return!"

  • "We went to this place because it was the oldest mexican in NYC and had a Bib Gourmand, but it was disappointing. The free dip that came along with the nachos at the start was stale, the guacamole had no garnishing and was little more than mashed avocados. The chicken in mole sauce was also underwhelming - the only good dish of the entire afternoon was a sea bass with pasilla chile. The Margaritas were really tiny. The bill, for lunch was enormous. I have no idea why this restaurant is on Michelin's Bib Gourmand list."

  • "The maduros were exceptional and the ribs were a real surprise and very tasty. Very friendly staff. We spent 3 hours visiting with long lost friends on a very busy night but were treated with great courtesy. Loved the restaurant."

  • "Food was great, although two entrees were switched. After cocktails, we didn't notice, but reconstructed the next day. Lively bar scene, so sit in the back section if you want to converse."
