I'm of Mexican descent, and the food here was very authentic. I had the enchilada with green sauce, and it tasted home-made. My cousin had the red enchiladas, and she felt the same. I had a mango margarita, and it was delicious, but could have been a little stronger.

Excellent food and drinks. I highly recommend the margaritas as well as trying some tequila from their pretty lengthy tequila list. We had a reservation for 6:30 where it wasn't too crowded but filled up soon after getting our drinks so I recommend getting a reservation. Our server was still very attentive after the restaurant filled up. A definite gem! No complaints :)

I met a friend for lunch at noon on a Thursday, so it was pretty quiet in there. I've also been there for dinner, and it's usually bustling with activity. I really like the food, they use fresh ingredients, and it's not heavy, as some Mexican food can be. Stand outs for me are the spinach empanada, and the ceviche salad. My fiance likes the carne esada. Overall,it's a great place to go with just about anyone, as they also offer Vegan and Gluten Free options. I also appreciate the attentive, but not hovering, servers.

We enjoyed El Nuevo Mexicano very much. My wife ordered a dish that was too spicy for her, but that happens. The chips and salsa were fresh and perfect, the margarita's potent and the food of good quality and flavor. What more do you need?

A simple, comfortable Mexican restaurant that really delivers. Tried it on a whim because it was near a movie destination, and it really paid off. Service was great. When asking about difference in molés, the server brought a taste of each for us to decide. Quality of food was great, and service was wonderful. For this 'tier' of restaurant, I'm very impressed and it goes on my list of regular meals out.

With a rare weekday off I decided to check out El Neuvo; as they had recently appeared on Check Please (and seemed appealing to me) I knew they likely would be swamped for a while on evenings and weekends - so this seemed like perfect timing. While this was not by any means the best Mexican fare I have consumed in Chicago it was well above average and definitely the best option within a short walk of my condo. Nice ambiance, decent service and a very nice menu. Plenty of tacos, burritos and expected fare, but also a lot of far more interesting items to choose from. I loved the chipotle sauce served with my carnitas. While a bit pricier than other nearby Mexican venues, the superior food quality makes it money well spent.

I happened to stumble upon this restaurant on the Internet and I'm so happy I did, the food is amazing and I can't wait to go back!! The chips & salsa are to die for and so is the Agave Margaritas our server recommended :) we also enjoyed some Tequila it had a light vanilla & cinnamon flavoring, it was awesome. Overall a nice little restaurant with great Mexican food!!!!!

We made our first visit to celebrate a birthday on a Sunday afternoon. We had a great meal. The service was excellent and the food was terrific. The menu has great variety. In addition to the traditional items you would expect on the menu of a Mexican restaurant there was a nice selection of other items. I had a chicken breast with peaches and raisins that was outstanding. Our entrees were spicier than we had expected (which we enjoyed), but if you like something milder I'd alert the waiter. We are definitely planning to return.

This place is simply great. Service is always so friendly, it is cozy and it is cute. You never wonder where more chips or salsa are, they always have them coming. We have been here before they were featured on Check Please and they never change. Always great food, always great service, always a great feeling in this restaurant. This is a regular on our list -- brought a new couple with us and they of course loved it. Would highly recommend and will be back again soon.

Phenomenal food! I especially love that you have the option of white rice or quinoa as a side with entrees--the quinoa is amazzzing. Their vegetarian/vegan options are really impressive, and the servers are always thoughtful, quick, and helpful. My favorites are the vegan enchiladas, the guacamole, and the vegetarian platter. The Cadillac Margarita is also really delicious!

Interesting menu with several vegetarian options. Seafood offerings included a glazed salmon fillet that my husband enjoyed very much. I had a vegetarian enchilada plate with quinoa instead of rice. The portions are a bit small for the price. Jorge gave good service. If you are in the neighborhood it's tasty. It's pretty good Mexican food, but nothing to write home about. Wish there were more options (such as black beans, soups, salads, a la carte items) and that the prices were a tad more reasonable. Other than that, a fine go-to Mexican joint. Still trying to find our favorite go-to, but for now, we will probably be back!

My wife and I re-discovered this place after a long time. The fact that it is still there is a testament to the quality of the food and experience. The menu is fairly standard Mexican fare, but at a quality level that is above most of the Mexican options in the city. ambiance is a big step above with exposed brick, nice artwork and decorative tin ceiling tiles. Margarita was very good and chips/salsa is one of the best I've had. Location is so-so, but that doesn't really matter. Will be going back.

A great find with some of the tastiest food in a cute but not cheesy Mexican setting. $22 pitcher of margaritas a great start. I look forward to the outdoor patio in the warmer months here in Chicago. crispy chips served with flavorful salsa that has a kick but not to spicy starts the meal off. The have a more standard taco burrito page on the menu but then also a little more unique dishes too. We started with the queso fundido with chorizo it was a big serving more then enough for 4 and had good flavor a nice app. For our entree we had the steak burrito it had a great beef flavor and served with beans rice and a side salad good portions so we shared. Awesome service.

We were very pleased with everything at El Nuevo Mexicano! Everyone enjoyed their meals, and the menu was good in that there were some traditional favorites (enchiladas, burritos, etc.), but also house specialties that were unique and delicious! The margaritas were great and a pitcher is enough to share for 4. The guacamole was outstanding, though could use a pinch of salt. This restaurant is in a neighborhood with lots of other unique restaurants--one could spend a week there and dine at a different place every meal and not be disappointed! The place is pretty small, so reservations are a good idea. If you like Mexican food that's a cut above typical Mexican fare, this is the place to go!

Everything about the place was superior. The food was superior to any Mexican dining I have ever had. The lettuces on the platter were mixes of fresh California greens. The mole sauce was pure Heaven. The VERY BEST HOME MADE Guacamole I have ever had anywhere. Lovely wait staff who didn't rush us to order. Beautiful presentation on a huge platter. Good value. They offer a discount for diners attending a nearby theater. I'll be back and bring bring friends. Charming decor.

The food is great, service is great, ambiance is nice. My problem with this place is that for what you pay, you don't get the amount of food that should be expected. I know it's a nice place, I know it's Lincoln Park/Lakeview. But I get a lot better value at other nice restaurants in the neighborhood than I do at this place. The portion size is pretty comparable to other Mexican restaurants, but I end up with a plate full of filler that I don't eat. The enchiladas are super tasty, and I love the rice, but there's not enough for me in comparison to what I pay. If I am going to spend $20-25 on an entree, I better have some leftovers for a second dinner. That's the way it is at other places. If they lowered prices, this place would be perfect.

Our table was ready right at our reservation time and even though all of our party hadn't arrived yet, they seated us gladly right away while we waited for them. The food is unique, vegetarian friendly, and delicious. The margaritas could be a bit stronger given their cost, but they still tasted good. The tilapia fish tacos are absolutely fabulous. We love the chicken enchiladas with tomatilla sauce. They have huge chunks of chicken, not that stewy stuff. The food is fresh, well prepared and the staff have just the right amount of attentiveness. Be sure to have a reservation, they can get busy. It's any easy bus ride, #22, stops a half a block away and there is parking on the street. Bus is a great option in case you drink too many of their great margaritas.

We've gone here many times and are never disappointed. My favorite dish is the coconut shrimp, and the chipotle mashed potatoes that come with it are the perfect compliment. Their chips and salsa are decent, the chips are tasty and the salsa is perfectly spicy. My only complaint is their frozen margaritas seemed pretty low on tequila, almost virgin the last time.
