  • "Excellent food and service. I had the Short Ribs and my wife had the trout - both were fantastic. The pomme frites were uniquely seasoned and delicious as an appetizer and the cardamom doughnuts were very tasty to end the evening. Our server Kelly could not have been more attentive or helpful when looking to order any portion of our meal or the wine. Another nice twist is they serve imported still and sparkling water at no extra charge. A very enjoyable experience and we will visit again next time we are in the area."

  • "This modest appearing restaurant is really fine. The al fresco dining on the back porch has the best view in town, and the staff attend to the details such as space heaters and lap blankets if needed. We ate in late June and needed neither. Weather was perfect. The menu featured local ingredients prepared with local, Spanish and Moroccan influences. Very flavorful without overbearing spices. Chef Fred has a very deft hand with his spices. The wine list is not large, but it is thoughtful and interesting. We had a very nice bottle of something Spanish (sorry I forgot what it was). Do not miss the cicharrones! They are worth the trip all by themselves. Be sure to eat here if you like great food--It was our favorite in Taos."

  • "All parts of my meal were outstanding, Grilled hearts of romaine, Posole soup and Enchilada in a green chile sauce with buffalo short rib as the filling. Each dish was a sublime combination of flavors that exploded on each bite. The wait staff and management were professional in every respect, right down to pairing the wines. When I return to Taos I going strait to Meze (p.s. I am an east coast snob and I am not one to take time to write glowing reviews, that's how good it was!)."

  • "Romantic setting outdoors with beautiful view of the mountains and a well manicured garden. Service was relaxed yet attentive. The ambience was perfect--not overly quiet but well chosen music in the background and easy to converse privately. Delicious wines paired well with fresh local food--my grilled trout was a revelation of how good a simple dish could be--salted and grilled with a finish of chopped herbs and olive oil. My husband had the ribeye cooked to perfection and savored every bite! Butterleaf lettuce salad with tarragon and blueberries was delicious, as were the fried, stuffed olives. Cardamom donuts for dessert are a must-served in a martini glass so you can drink the chocolate sauce (which the hubby could not resist)."

  • "We didn't expect to be seated al fresco, but it was a pleasant surprise. When the night cooled off, they provided blankets and gas heaters! The food and wine met our expectations, although the wine list variety was fairly narrow (representing mainly Spain and France, if I recall, and mostly high-end bottles). I chose this place for the excellent food reviews, knowing the ambiance had room for improvement. We had a great evening - just what we expected!"

  • "El Mese is a reason to go to Taos if nothing else there interests you. The grilled romaine, tuna carpaccio, amazing desserts and impeccable service are top drawer. From the moment you walk in and are greeted by the friendly ladies, given a selection of table waters (where in Taos do you get that?), and served as a personal guest by the wait staff you feel "special". Our waiter even advised us if we did not like our dish after we tried it he would bring something else to make sure we were satisfied. He could speak with confidence since all of our food was excellent! The ambiance offered a beautiful view of the mountains which was frequently photographed by diners. We look forward to our next trip to El Meze!"

  • "We went to this restaurant twice during our 3 days in Taos in June, 2014 and found it to be a gem. The menu is short, but everything is done very well in that you taste the flavor combinations described in the menu. We had, Chicharrones (pork bellies), buffalo short ribs adovada (you definitely taste the red peppers marinade of this classic northern NM dish), posole verde (soup), little green salad ( blueberries were sweet), truchas yerba buena (grilled trout). The pastry chef is also worthy of mention. We had,Dark Chocolate Souffle Cake with hazelnut sauce and chopped hazelnuts) ,Dried Apricots (with a wonderful jasmine ice cream and pistachios), and the best of all desserts mini cardemon yeast doughnuts with caramel/chocolate sauce."

  • "This was my first time at the restaurant based on previous reviews for my anniversary. I must say that all them positive reviews were spot on! The menu is simple but the food is delicious!! Our server Harley was so professional and attentive, my expectations were exceeded and I had high ones at that. We had the tuna carpaccio, chicharrones, and the asparagus salad followed by lamb chops and the trout! Holy halon batman, those entrees were perfection! The weather triggered a power outage while we were there but the place kept going and did not bat an eye lash. I would come back again and have been telling my friends about this restaurant. ***** 5 Stars"

  • "We ate here twice during our week stay in Taos. I chose El Meze because of the reviews on Open Table even though our hotel concierge didn't include it on his list of places to dine. And we are glad we did! The tuna carpaccio is amazing and the chiccarones are a wonderful and unusual appetizer. I had both the roast chicken and the lamb chops on our two visits while my wife had the lamb and the trout. Everything was wonderful and the service that Harley provided was exemplary. You must go to this restaurant."

  • "My wife and I travel extensively and have been able to enjoy some of the best restaurants in the country and we both agree this is one of the top five restaurants we ever had the pleasure to experience. The atmosphere is pure Taos, with outdoor dining that looks out at the beautiful mountains. The service is exceptional, attentive and helpful; but the food is off the charts. You have to try the buffalo short ribs and the lamb. Both are prepared to perfection. This was a fantastic dining experience, one my wife and I won't forget for a long, long time."

  • "We sat on the patio with a fantastic view of the mountains. The service was very good, and the waiter seemed to have a good knowledge of the wines, which were mostly Spanish ( and which were unfamiliar to us). We each had very fresh salads and split the roast chicken dish which was excellent and had enough for a small lunch the next day. There was no charge and no hassle about splitting the entrée. Very enjoyable dining experience. "

  • "We were visiting from out of town, found this place by chance and are so glad we did. Ordered a bunch of things we'd never really had before and everything was delicious . Our server was gracious and helpful. We had an Albarino with our meal and it paired perfectly. Plus, if you get to sit outside, you have an amazing view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Highly recommend this place. "

  • "With all of the choices in and around Taos, we wanted to make a thoughtful choice for dining. The reviews mentioned things that we were interested in- intriguing food choices, large wine list, an adult restaurant. We were def not disappointed! Kelly, our server, took great care of us. She knew all of the menu items so could explain things we had not had before. Everything was delish! It was an easy place to find on the outskirts of town. Reasonable prices too considering it is a tourist town and the start of the summer season. "

  • "We ate at several really great restaurants while on vacation and El Mez was our absolute favorite. The food, the view and the service were all superb and thoughtful. We ate outside on the patio overlooking Taos Mountain. As the sun went down the breeze and cool air kicked in. We were offered heaters and soft, fuzzy blankets to warm us as we continued to eat our delicious meals and watch the changing sun, shadows and clouds on the mountain. The food was divine and just the right portions. Truly our favorite meal in the Taos area. We will definitely come back and highly suggest that anyone visiting northern New Mexico make El Mez a must-do dining experience. "

  • "This is a lovely restaurant with extraordinary food. Each course flowed to the next with exciting taste and beautiful presentation. The ice cream dessert was out of this world-- jasmine ice cream with lemon brandy syrup, apricots, and pistachios! Service was impeccable throughout. We had previously dined on the patio last Fall with the mountains as a backdrop, and were inside this time. Either way it was extraordinary!"

  • "I dined at El Meze as part of a group of four, and that was important. It meant that each of us could order different dishes and share. Nothing disappointed. The peppers and flatbread with chevre kicked off the meal, the salads were fantastic, the tamale was delicious and the desserts–paired with a nice glass of sherry–were a wonderful close. We enjoyed the food, had a terrific server and met the chef at the end of the night. El Meze set the stage for a great evening with friends, provided a warm and casual environment and served really terrific food. Check it out!"

  • "El Meze fit the bill for our group after a full day of skiing....the ambiance of the old home is warm and inviting, the staff equally so....We chose this restaurant based on prior reviews and our preference for something a bit out of the ordinary run of New Mexico fare....and we're not disappointed....The starter " tapas" dishes were delicious, everyone's entrees were shared with enthusiasm as we had each tried different items, and the cardamon doughnuts were a fitting finale....I dined " light" with mussels and a grilled romaine salad...both prepared perfectly. Their version of a NM enchilada was phenomenal....a small restaurant, so suggest making reservations, especially if you are a group."

  • "We enjoyed our early dinner in this old adobe set off the main road heading north out of Taos. Excellent, responsive and prompt service that was very knowledgeable about food and wine. Only disappointment was the limited menu which just didn't have many choices that we found appealing. We liked what we ordered, particularly the buffalo short ribs adovada, but probably won't go back until the menu changes...which we understand it does from time to time. All in all, a very positive experience."

  • "El Meze is a great restaurant. The outside area was closed (too cold), so we could not sit outside and gaze at Taos Mountain. But the interior space was as quaint as it used to be when RC Gorman used to hang out there years ago (when the restaurant was under another ownership and name). My daughter and her fiancé had the buffalo tamale and loved it, I enjoyed the pasta dish, and we enjoyed the Spanish wine with dinner. We couldn't resist the dessert menu, and loved them all."

  • "We may not have found El Meze, if it weren't for our B&B hosts, and boy would we have missed out! This place looks like nothing from outside. The logo looks like there's blood splattered on it for some reason. But the food here was incredible. The atmosphere is funky and adorable, if not romantic, and we did not have a single item (4 courses) that we didn't like. The salads were impeccable. The mussels were the best I have ever eaten, and we could have consumed the leftover broth with a straw. The trout was insanely good. Everything was fantastic. I cannot wait to return to Taos so I can eat here again."

  • "Our band of 5 tried probably 4 of the best restaurants in Taos and El Meze was tops. Fried olives were delicious and interesting, excellent quality steak, the trout is a must try for someone at the table (fresh fish and interesting cilantro preparation). Two people ordered oxtails and they were stewed perfectly. My favorite was the Chicarrones which is normally "nasty bits or offal" but El Meze uses pork belly. It's crisp and tender and fatty, absolutely the way it should be. Wine list is very good, if a tad bit too marked up in some places."

  • "We had heard various comments about El Meze, and decided to check it out for ourselves during restaurant week in Taos. Our server, Kelly, was very welcoming and efficient. We ordered from the $30 prix fixe menu. First were olives stuffed with bleu cheese lightly fried in egg whites. Yummy with the Spanish wine we ordered! We ordered 2 different salads, one with beets, one with bibb lettuce and blueberries. Both tasted very fresh and were generous portions. I had the mussels as my entree. They were wonderful! Who would of thought that northern NM would have great mussels?!!! My husband ordered a vegetarian dish with homemade pasta and beans. It was also delicious. The desserts were fabulous as well. We will definitely return to El Meze!"
