We had this restaurant recommended by the hostess at another restaurant we enjoyed. It was off season so we had no trouble making reservations (for 2). The food was excellent. I first ordered their steak and it turned out gristly. When the waiter inquired about my meal I told him (Isaac) and he whisked it away with apologies. Brought me another one, same problem, and repeated the removal and brought me something else from the menu (which I chose). Sincerely apologized for the steak. He was so very nice about it. He also had grown the heirloom tomatoes we had as an appetizer. All in all it was a very nice evening with fabulous (mostly) food but the service was incomparable.

We were in Taos last week and had dinner at El Meze. It was one of those unforgettable meals. We had the Chicharrones to start. The pork belly had a little too much fat but the sauce was extraordinary. We also had the grilled hearts of Romaine salad. The lemon anchove dressing was perfect and the char on the lettuce was just right. We then had the posole, which was made with chicken instead of pork. It cannot be praised too much. The entree was the trout. Although it was also great, anything after the posole was a bit of a let down. The service was great. We have a list of all the ingredients for the sauce used on the Chicharrones, kindly provided to us by the waiter. This was a fabulous meal.

Whenever we are in Taos, five or six time a year, we try to never miss El Meze. The food is always excellent, very innovative and using local ingredients. Fred Muller, the chef, is honored every year with a James Beard's New Mexico top chef listing. In my opinion, El Meze is the best restaurant in Taos and possibly in New Mexico. I especially like the whole trout baked in mint and cilantro - crispy on the outside, moist inside. The share plates for the beginning are especially interesting and very tasty; chicharrones, buffalo short ribs and frijoles de olla.

We were visiting Taos from San Francisco, and were delighted with our dinner at El Meze. We split a fresh tomato medley with chevre cheese, and enjoyed the wide variety of homegrown tomatoes! Both of our entrees were delicious, and the wine pairings suggested by our server were perfect with each entree. The herb frites were amazing, and we ate every single one!

This was bizarre. We made our res. 2 or 3 weeks in advance, but on arrival were told (on a chilly evening!) that all the inside tables were "booked." We were shown to a breezy table on the patio, which was stocked with heaters and blankets. We asked again why we couldn't sit inside and were told the inside wasn't "ready". Later I peeked in the windows and saw not only customers enjoying their dinners in comfort, but plenty of empty tables set up for service!! I had to wrap myself in 2 blankets and my coat and was still cold, while my husband, facing one of the heaters, felt like his head was sunburned. People at 3 other tables were complaining, so it wasn't just us. Delicious food not enough to have to eat it in the cold.

El Meze Restaurant is the #1 rated restaurant in Taos, New Mexico by Trip Advisor. Whenever we visit a town, my wife and I try to dine at the #1 rated restaurant in the town. When we were given the menu at El Meze they only had four entrees on the menu. My wife is allergic to cilantro and two of the menu entrees contained cilantro so my wife ordered the $47 rib eye steak. When the steak arrived it was just the steak and a huge pile of French fries. The steak was good but the French fries were comparable to those one would get at McDonalds. We had better steaks in Taos at less than half of the price. I had the Tamale de Cardenas which was OK but worth less than $10 instead of the $17 charged for the item. We will not return to El Meze!!

We chose El Meze from reading reviews on Trip Advisor, Fodors, etc. We were rewarded with one of the best meals on our recent trip. The food was imaginative and exceptionally well done. Harley was our waiter, he was knowledgeable about what wine would complement our choices and was spot on with his recommendation of chicharrones for a tapas plate. (Ask him for his "story" about how he got his name.) Food and service outstanding, excellent wine, great outdoor setting, great place for foodies.

We drove up to Taos from Santa Fe for a Pueblo Feast Day and some hiking. After having 2 great meals in Santa Fe, I think El Meze was my favorite of this trip to NM. We had the local bolito beans, a great kale salad with roasted tomato vinaigrette and trout from Colorado. Loved all of it. The tomato vinaigrette paired well with the kale. The beans were prepared with right amount cheese and seasonings and served with delicious fresh flat bread. My favorite dish was the trout prepared with an interesting mix of mint, cilantro and garlic. We were obligated to try dessert after a wonderful meal. I would not call the cake we had a souffle but the hazelnut flavors were wonderful.

This is such a great find, especially after all the same type of restaurants in Taos. Great service, great food. Love the donut dessert and pasta entree. The moon coming up over the mountain top set my guests about over the moon, they were so impressed. Loved that everyone was comfortably warm with heaters and blankets. Definitely coming back.

We enjoyed this restaurant so much we went back the next night. We dined outdoors with a spectacular view of Mt. Wheeler. Our servers Gabriel and Zak were both attentive and knowledgeable but not intrusive. The menu is Spanish eclectic with several very unique dishes. I had the buffalo tamale in a bowl of Hatch chiles that was wonderfully spicy and flavorful. The homemade pasta was delicious. The wine list was adequate and paired well with the menu. Gabriel was very helpful in navigating the wine choices. We will definitely be returning to El Mez when we return to Taos.

Had a wonderful meal on Friday night. the selection of entrees are limited but we tried the special pasta (with handpicked fresh mushrooms from the area), the wonderful trout and the steak. The tomato salad with good cheese was extra special direct from one of the waiters garden. Our waitress was very helpful in suggesting a wine and recommending appetizers and dessert. a wonderful evening looking out at the sunset on the mountains. can't wait to return again.

We were very happy with the food selection and all of the things we tried were wonderfully prepared and very tasty. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling to the Taos area. Our server was very busy, but he was knowledgable about the menu and we ordered many appetizers and a delicious Heirloom tomato salad. The house pasta was wonderful and the dessert, a frozen concoction. made up by one of the owners was so yummy and a great way to end the meal. The chef and his partner were very hospitable, too! We were so fortunate to try this place on a lovely evening as we were able to sit outside and enjoy their garden in the back.

I don't often rate restaurants as perfect, but El Meze is as close as it comes: A perfect blend of well-planned, well executed dishes, attentive yet unobtrusive service and a view to die for. The menu, while not vast, is well conceived and changes seasonally, using fresh herbs grown within eye-shot. Service is near flawless. This was our favorite, most memorable meal in a week-long road trip filled with great meals. My only regret is not living in closer proximity to Taos to make this a regular destination.

When the weather is good and the patio is open, the view of the mountains is perfect. We enjoyed our meal and wine selection. Although the white wine selection is mostly Spanish which are wines we aren't as familiar with. The waiter tried to select the one closest to a Pinot Grigio and it just didn't match. However, a red that was selected from Languedoc region of France was delicious. For our entrees, we both ordered the trout which was blackened and quite good. The local vegetables, green beans, were delicious - cooked with butter and hazelnuts, topped with blue cheese. Also, loved the fresh local greens in the salad.

Have eaten here in both June and August this summer and have found the menu unchanged and lacking in enough choices for entrees which are reasonably good but not for repeat customers. The steak choice is unreasonably priced at around $45. I had the buffalo spare ribs (appetizer menu) instead of an entree and found them to be so highly seasoned that they were not enjoyable. The Romain salad was, however, the best part of the meal. My dining partner had the Trout for a second time, which was good also.

Visiting Taos for a couple of weeks, we have dined out quite a bit. El Meze was outstanding. We enjoyed sitting on the patio with the lovely courtyard and garden and great mountain views. Very interesting and diverse menu. My husband had the pasta which was delicious. I had the tamale which was the best I have ever eaten (and believe me I have eaten a lot of tamales in my day!) Dessert was terrific also. Our server was pleasant and attentive. All around great experience.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff in a modest, center-courted building, but shared with another restaurant and the local waterworks company! I was seated outside on the patio with a garden/mountain view. I particularly enjoyed the Herbed Frites with Horseradish Aioli as an appetizer, and the Truchas Yerba Buena (whole grilled trout with a lemon, herbed sauce) and served with an Herb Salad, as a main course. To accompany the meal throughout, I chose a refreshing, sparkling white wine by the glass. For dessert, I chose the heavenly, lavender-flavored Creme Brulee. El Meze is the perfect place for an excellent meal away from the crowded Plaza in Taos!

My husband and I went to El Meze for our 10th anniversary dinner. The food and service was amazing. We were seated outdoors at a table with a beautiful view of the mountains. Unfortunately, we choose a night that a very large, loud group was eating outside as well. We could barely hear each other talking, so we left early. We were greeted by name! What a special beginning to our anniversary dinner. The out door dining and view of the Taos Mountain made the perfect setting for a special dining experience. The meal was outstanding with choices unique to El Meze. The wine list was a surprise with few if any wines we were familiar with, which are mostly from California. However, the Tempranillo we choose was delicious. Service was excellent! We felt pampered and ate and drank out of our comfort zone--enjoying every bite and very sip! There was something on the menu for every taste. We will return and highly recommend El Meze!
