  • "In anticipation of El Manantial moving to Herndon (and changing their name to Europa) we decided to drive to Reston to see what they're all about. We found them in a shopping center that is obviously dying. From the outside, the restaurant is very nondescript. But when we stepped inside, we were delighted by the lovely murals which have a decided European feel. We were greeted and seated by Mario, one of the family owners. Our server was wonderful, answering all questions about the menu and making perfect wine suggestions. The food is not only delicious, but also beautifully presented. We even let ourselves be tempted by the beautiful dessert tray offerings. If they weren't coming to Herndon, we'd be going back to Reston to dine with them!"

  • "A nice and enjoyable restaurant choice in the neighborhood. The service was attentive. The interior decor makes you comfortable with pretty murals that transport you to somewhere away from the small strip mall where this restaurant resides. The food was good. I've sampled several dishes after two visits here and highly recommend the french onion soup. Elsewhere it's often oversalted with gloppy cheese.....but here it was excellent. Also, the filet mignon strogonoff was delicious and would be, for me, a reason to come back and have again."

  • "This is a great restaurant in the middle of Reston in a sleepy shopping center, at least for now....I understand this restaurant will move to Herndon, taking the place of a Russian restaurant that had been there for years....move is planned in the timeframe of May/June 2014. The food here is fabulous, large portions and reasonably priced. The wine list is very impressive and reasonably priced....and the staff just tremendous: attentive without being clingy and genuinely interested in making sure your dining experience is a good one. I go to this restaurant once every other month or so and it is consistently a great experience....can't wait for them to move to their new space in Herndon!"

The restaurant is off the beaten path, so I feel as if it is a well kept secret.   • "Started a dinner group with some co-workers, this was our first restaurant. Great Pick! The waiter was knowledgeable, able to provide recommendations on food/wine. He even took the time to separate everyone’s check ( 7 of us). Picked from the Tapas menu, which was definitely affordable and allowed us to try several foods. Everything was hot and fresh. Calamari was nice and had a great sauce to go with it. The scallops were tinder and flavorful (perfect), But the Paella, was the ultimate best. Plenty of seafood in it. The rice was cooked perfectly and all the ingredients blended perfectly. Lastly, the tres leches, When I say WoW, that’s what I mean. It was moist, and the flavors were so delicate. Great experience!"

Whether a special occasion or just a meal on the town, the Fuentes family has always been a great host serving excellent food, with excellent service. This occasion was during this year's restaurant week. The selections on the special menu for restaurant week were interesting, and choices my wife and I made provided wonderful meals. On a Friday night of restaurant week, it was crowded. But the crowd did not detract at all from the staff's service or the quality of the good. El Manantial will stay on our "favorites" list."

  • "We came here to celebrate my wife's birthday. We are repeat customers, but had previously only done the tapas menu. This time they only had the entree menu and a prixe fix menu due to it being restaurant week. We chose the prixe fix menu, and greatly enjoyed the entire meal, appetizer to dessert. The wine was also excellent, and the staff paid great attention to my wife's gluten-free requirement. Also, the manager stopped by on at least three occasions to check on us, and they recognized my wife's birthday appropriately - putting a candle on her dessert, and asking if we wanted them to sing to her (we politely declined). Great meal, and great experience overall!"

  • "The dress recommendations in Open Table indicated "Jacket Preferred". We found that most diners there were in casual or business casual attire. The Restaurant week menu was very bland and uninteresting. The fish in the Paella was overcooked and the rice was gummy. The chocolate banana dessert was dry and flavorless. I would not go back to this restaurant nor recommend it to anyone else."

  • "Tried something different for Restaurant Week. Offerings looked interesting. I had the avocado and crabmeat salad. Good size portion with a reasonable amount of crab meat. Unfortunately, it was every bland. Expected it to have a little flavor created by the chef but it was very plain. Husband had the Vegetarian paella and it was very tomatoey. He expected at least the saffron based dish with a little kick but it was very bland. Perhaps the other items on the menu were a lot more enjoyable."

  • "tucked away in a nondescript strip mall, this is a real gem-- The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is well run, the food is very good, the prices are very reasonable and the service is wonderful-- although a bit outdated in its decor, it is very clean and well maintained. For the extensive menu, the food is extremely well prepared and the wine list is surprisingly of good quality. We've been there three times in the past year and have not had one negative comment."

  • "My husband, adult son and I ate here last night. Escargots: - instead of the usual escargot plate, they came in a small casserole dish with lots of oil, some mushrooms and garlic. Eh. Osso bucco with mashed potatoes: mediocre. Thin veal shank, but fairly tasty. Not at all worth $32. Green beans and carrots:very heavily treated with oil. Potatoes: puree which was flat and flavorless, and odd consistency. Paella: - not a whole lot of seafood; pedestrian tasting rice. Frogs' legs: Two tiny legs for about $8! Duck breast: Nicely cooked; Too pricey. Would I go again. No. If the prices were 1/3 less, then maybe. But for these prices I want to be wowed, and I was not. The wine markup from retail was easily a third; sometimes 4 times. Meh."

We enjoyed the venison, beautifully prepared, and the chicken parmesan, also nicely done. The desserts are baked daily and are beautifully presented and equally delicious. Service on this special night was unusually fast. That is understandable as the tables were fully reserved through the evening. El Manantial is a wonderful local gem! Very enjoyable as usual!"
