Our first trip to El Gaucho - PDX. We have been to the one in Tacoma, WA and had a fantastic experience. Food as expected was unbelievable but service by our waiter and waitress team was anything but outstanding. We came to enjoy a nice relaxing evening but felt we were pushed along from the start. Both the waiter and the waitress seemed stressed. Our reservation was for 7:30 PM and the way we were pushed along you would of thought it was 11:00 PM and they wanted to get home. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and still gave 20% on the hopes we just caught them on a very off night. We will think twice before going back.

The best fine dining experience in Portland, Oregon. My wife birthday was perfect with a signed card on the table from all the employees of El Gaucho. Most of the employees including the manager came over to express Happy Birthday wishes. The food was perfect with savoring flavors and delightful dessert.

I brought my date here to celebrate my new job. She is not over 21, and we had reservations for 8:15PM. We didn't get seated until around 8:25PM, but they put us in the bar. Unfortunately, we had to wait another 15 minutes to be seated in the dining room. They comped us a free app for the wait, and did a great effort making it right! The service, the food, and the live instruments made the night worth it!

Table next to entrance and live band was not the best for me. That said, it was a fairly slow night and the music was good. Service wss the best I've had, staff was very attentive and at least 5 of them congratulated us on our anniversary. Food was wonderful and portions ample. Actually didn't have room for desert.

Pricey, but what an excellent experience! And I feel that our money was well spent. Outstanding cocktails, food, service, wine, and awesome desserts! I do not go out to dine very often, preferring to eat at home, so when I go out to a restaurant I enjoy a nice piece of beef and a good wine. My time out must be a complete experience and it needs to be special. And this is it! Can't wait until the cigar lounge opens up after the remodel! El Gaucho - my new favorite spot!! I am definitely coming back!

On a family visit, I took son and his wife to El Gaucho. Didn't realize we needed to bring an expense account or buckets of money. I've been to many five-star steakhouses in my day, but never, and I mean never, have I been so "gouged" by the pricing. Yes, the food is good. Yes, the service is great. Yes, the wine list is extensive, although it was inaccessible. I drank a second martini instead of paying $35 for a 6 oz. glass of wine, since the Cabs were so overpriced. I told the server that the wine list was ridiculous. Our server did his best, but he had an unhappy threesome on his hands. Surrounding us were people with expense accounts. All were getting gouged, but we were the only ones who were concerned. We will not be back.

Table was beautiful and attention to detail was very apparent. The waitress was very knowledgeable on the menu and wine list. Even the wait people were gracious and attentive. They even checked our table when we left and brought our flowers we had forgotten. A dining experience we have enjoyed in the past and will again.

Maybe our tastes have changed, but the steaks were under seasoned. When you order a $68 ribeye you assume that it will be marbled and flavorful, but it wasn't. Our favorite SW au gratin potatoes were lacking cheese and overall everything else we ordered was meh.

Lovely first dining experience, the food superb cooked to precise perfection. Intending to order separate plates, but were recommended the El Gaucho Experience a 4 course meal, with many options to savor a variety for less, drawback being both are required to order so meals can be timed together. More than enough food along with complimentary fruit, nut, cheese tray which made you feel the freedom to relax and linger. Our waiter was attentive & personable. We felt no rush and from start to finish spent 3 hours savoring the flavors & relaxing thus making the final price seem less exorbitant & worth the culinary experience. Our valet driver left homemade cookies a kind final gesture to a great evening spent at El Gaucho!

Took my Husband here for his Bday dinner. The service from the hostess who seated us, attendants and server was first class. The hostess even switched our napkins from white to black so that we did not get white fuzz on our dark clothing. Unfortunately the meal itself was underwhelming especially for the price. Our tab came to $300 (including tip) for two entrees, two rounds of drinks, salad a side and dessert. Don't get me wrong it was good, but given the reputation I expected to have my socks blown off. We have had better for less with more ambiance. I will say that the table side from scratch caesar salad was the most amazing caesar I have ever had and worth trying.

I made the reservation over a week in advance. When we got there we were seated back in the wine room, the room had no ambiance or character, it felt like someone's basement with no windows. We were the last ones to be seated in the room so we ended our meal the last 30-45 minutes sitting in a silent empty room. Food was very good and our waiter assigned to our table did a good job. Didn't appreciate the overall lack of service other than our waiter though. Wouldn't say it was worth the money, I could have had a much better meal somewhere else.

I had made special requests thru OpenTable because I was planning on proposing and I was not disappointed, the staff went above and beyond to make our special evening happen...and she said YES! Expected the service to match the food but this was certainly not the case. Our server was attentive for about the first 15 minutes and then it was like pulling teeth to get her attention and when she did come to the table she was absent minded and curt. The food was excellent, unfortunately the experience was ruined by the poor service.

We had been meaning to go to El Gaucho, but Jake's is sentimental to us when we're in town for a nice dinner. We have frequented other offering of downtown, but we decided this time, it was El Gaucho for sure. And we're glad we did. Ceasar Salad table side is as good as everyone says. The Chateaubriand/Lobster was excellent and prepared perfectly. Lobster had no hint of rubber texture. Waiter/Waitress were absolutely excellent in every way. Very attentive, but never annoying. Always there, yet never obvious. Be warned, you may need to consider your budget a bit, but with the caliber of the food, anything you pick will probably be perfectly prepared. If you're not sure, talk to the waiter/waitress. They are very knowledgeable and will help.
