Diner Reviews
  • "Our first time at this Spanish restaurant. The food was good - we had the sea bass and salmon entrees. The service was excellent. This restaurant is in a very old and charming building, nicely decorated, with a very comfortable feel. You can dress up or come casual and you will feel at home."

  • "Went there for the second time - 1st time was 8 years ago. Still have an excellent menu, everything well prepared. Some of us ordered Tapas, others ordered from the menu. Everyone enjoyed their choices. I had sea bass and it was excellent. Made with capers and yellow rice. The deserts were unusual and delicious. Also had live music starting @ 8:30. Blues band that was terrific; had the dance floor full. Restaurant is on Canyon Rd amongst all the art galleries. Great venue."

  • "Parker the bartender was awesome, makes great Margarita's and knows everybody in town. The food was just awesome, we started with 6 tapas and then I had the sea bass (the best I have ever had). The live music was great and had a few special guest singers. If you like to fish, talk to Parker, get fly fishing guide also! Will be back every time I go to Santa Fe"

  • "If you are in Santa Fe on a Tuesday and wanting something to do after hours this is the place to go. Great blues music and drinks to make you feel nice. Get there before 8:30 to get a good seat in the bar area, otherwise you are standing."

  • "There were 4 of us this particular night and we decided to get the Tapas for 4 (12 dishes). We then shared our meal with each other and we were able to try 12 dishes. We all had a great deal of fun trying all the different menu choices. The lamb and the salads were particular favorites with our group. In addition El Farol offer wine flights, allowing us to try 3 wines of our choosing for $15. Excellent idea. We all agreed that the evening was delicious and fun with all the tastings. Thank you. We'll be back!!"

  • "It has been about two years since we ate here - usually for lunch. We had reservations for 7pm and we were promptly seated. While they have many choices on their menu, it was difficult to know exactly what to expect. Most of us (6) enjoyed our choices with little disappointment. While the food was good, I rated it 3 star because of the cost. I would go back but only for a special occasion.g"

  • "We went here during restaurant week because frankly this place is too damn expensive for me usually. The food was excellent, I had the paella and she had the salmon. Great cocktail, wine and beer selections. One pet peeve of mine is when a retaurant doens't have it's beers listed. I asked what beers they had and the server couldn't be bothered to name them all for me. So I had to get up and walk to the bar to see what they had. I am perfectly capable of doing this but still, If you have 10 or more beers available, why not put them on a list?"

  • "Service was minimal with exception of bus girl. Saw our waitress when she took order and brought our food. Never asked if I wanted 2nd drink. My husband needed a refill which didn't occur till dessert was delivered. Flourless chocolate cake delish. Mushrooms tasty. Paella was uber bland? Bit dry. Expected uber flavor!? Will not rush back to el farol."

  • "We managed to book an Open Table reservation for a 7pm time slot on Valentine's Day and must say that this was by far the best Valentine's dinner experiences ever. El Farol management knows how to manage the flow of a busy night. While most restaurants are overbooked, El Farol seated us immediately at our reservation time. We had a private table for two but were given an option to sit in the more vibrant bar area. They had a 3-course prix fix menu (smart) which was filled with some of our favorite tapas items as well as some entrees we hadn't seen before. The entrees were huge! Very satisfying and delicious. Each course came with a cadence that was perfect. And they were priced fairly - just $45. A bargain and a gem."

  • "Had not been to El Farol in many years and we were looking forward to it as we have always had a positive opinion of the place. The place still has nice old rooms with ambience but we were seated in what used to be the outdoor patio that has been roughly enclosed with no thought at all to ambience. So alot may depend on your luck of the draw when they are making seating assignments. Servers were very pleasant and likeable but service was very slow. We finally asked about progress on our entre after more than an hour at our seats. We did enjoy the food although we thought that prices have crept up to levels not justified by the product and experience. This was not the interesting, vital, and good value experience we remembered from El"

  • "We have taken many, many friends and family to El Farol during the 14 years that we have lived in Santa Fe. The building dates to the 1830's and never fails to delight. The ambience and food is absolutely wonderful. Outdoor dining is a great choice during the non-winter months. Parking is a City lot accross the street. Do not fail to share a Tres Leches for dessert! House Margaritas are oh-so-fine, too."

  • "This is a tapas place that had a blues jam the night we went. Music and ambience were great, but although we had reservations to dine, we were seated in the bar (fine, because we loved the music) and did not get any service or even menus for a long time after seating. When food did come, all 6 things we tried were great."

  • "My daughter and I took her eight year old daughter to El Ferol for dinner to expose her to new types of food. She gamely tried all the Tapas we ordered, liking some and others not so much. We had ordered her some plain pasta as well as a dish of Paella for ourselves. The food came quickly and we enjoyed most of what we ordered. Of course, we had too much food but it was fun to taste and try new things. The dining are was somewhat crowded but people were friendly. We left just as the music and dancing started to take a sleepy girl home."

  • "Lunching here earlier in the week, we'd found the tapas excellent, service good and good value in a pleasant dining experience that played into our decision to return for dinner. What a night and day dining experience this was! Seating is maximum amount of people in the smallest space possible... Uncomfortably seated against a wall and corner, under the TV, we moved across the aisle to two tall tables, one almost on top of another couple. The tapas we'd enjoyed for lunch were now twice the price for the same items. A busy server with too many tables in two rooms was personable and polite, but overwhelmed. The Tres Angelitos dessert was excellent, but the evening was a noisy, uncomfortable disappointment. Lunch good... Dinner not so much."

  • "Used to be a loyal fan. We had been there many times and even had our wedding reception there, so we had high expectations as locals bringing guests from out of town. Embarrassing!!! The Paella was atrocious! Soggy rice, tasteless seafood (mostly MIA) served in a small soup bowl. The grilled Romaine salad was soggy not grilled, pickled garnish which added nothing. The artichoke Tapas was awful, again over cooked and soggy. I tried to find crab in the crab cake, but alas.....there was just filling. We had additional tapas, but just as bad. Service was indifferent. We had to ask for silverware, for water and remind the waiter to bring our wine. There are too many other good restaurants in this town . We won't be going back to this one."

  • "We went to El Farol on Chrstmas eve. Worked out perfect, since we were to walk the canyon for Christmas Eve. The service was fantastic. It was Christmas eve, but they managed to handle everyone without issue, or making you feel rushed. The food and wine were really good. It was a special night."

  • "We'd been told how great El Farol is, but it failed to live up to the hype. Reasonable prices, OK food, but no atmosphere, and the staff seemed more concerned about moving more customers through than truly serving them. We had a table in a relatively quiet area, but it served as a hallway to a much bigger room, so noisy foot traffic intruded."

  • "El Farol is a special place in Santa Fe. Located on legendary Canyon Road surrounded by art galleries and adobe homes. Music most nights. We were there Xmas Eve which is special on Canyon Road. The music was unmistakably Spanish which went perfectly with our Paella."

  • "El Farol is one of the iconic restaurants of Santa Fe. Perched on top of the art gallery scene on Canyon Road, this tapas restaurant features many little "cubby hole" rooms plus a larger room where diners can watch a flamenco dining show. In addition, El Farol often features entertainment in the bar area. On this particular post- Christmas night, I didn't feel the kitchen was up to its usually good standards, but nevertheless, I plan to return over and over again especially in the summer months when you can dine al fresco on the outdoor portal."

  • "Christmas is always a crazy time to test a restaurant. We enjoyed El Farol and will try it again. Unfortunately, the next time will be a truer test. Some of our food was cold and we felt very rushed even though there were 2 hours to eat. Process improvement would go far for next year. Stay tuned..."

  • "We found the service really poor. Waitresses making excuses for the kitchen, failure to take order in reasonable time, table assignment confusion. Host was not friendly. The best person was the one servicing that water at the table. He should get all the tip! Food was pretty good, but not well described in menu. Scallops not properly washed. This place has been around for a long time and may well be past its prime and living off its earlier reputation. I grew up in NM and remember it being much better. I would not go back here."

  • "Thanksgiving at El Farol was promoted as having live music--and there wasn't any! Also, how can a restaurant in Santa Fe be out of New Mexican wine?? The food was wonderful, but we made the reservation based on the fact that they advertised flamenco guitar music and they didn't seem very apologetic about it...which makes me think the music wasn't really planned."
    Dined on 11/28/2013
  • "Service was slow and server was not particularly friendly. Had to get my second glass of wine from the bar myself The $33 rib eye was on par for a bar steak at half that price. It was prepared as requested med rare. We have stopped here several times for a cocktail or music. We will do that again but will dine elsewhere."

  • "The menu items were spotty in quality - some were great (pollo curri) and others not so much. Service was great."
    Dined on 10/26/2013
  • "I had dinner here with a friend and the tapa menu was perfect for what we wanted. The small plates were actually very shareable with a generous amount for "small". The menu offers 6 tapa plates for $50 so we etched selected 3 plates and had a glass of wine. The only item I didn't think was my favorite was the bread (it's free). It was too soft and not firm and crusty enough for my taste. Delightful atmosphere and cozy for a cool, rainy fall evening."

  • "We loved the atmosphere and the decorations. If you go Saturday night there is a Flamenco show as well ($25 extra). We loved the food, we had mixed grill and the lamb chops and shrimps were cooked perfectly."

  • "Wonderful chicken and shrimp tacos. Filled nicely! Yummy chicken curry sandwich with a side of fries. Would definitely go back again."

  • "Interior spaces have no ambiance. What a shame because the restaurant has a killer location on Canyon Road. Service was fair at best. Food was decent but the sangria was tasteless. Would recommend only if you can sit on the porch. Otherwise there are much better tapas restaurants in Santa Fe."

  • "Went to El Farol for the Flamenco show, which was extraordinary. Loved it. Food and service played second fiddle. After asking waiter to give us a few minutes to determine what we would eat, it took him forever to come back to our table. We chose tapas for four, and had to choose twelve items from the lengthy list. Hard to keep track of for us, and the waiter. And we did have to remind him of one of the items we ordered. Drinks took long to come to the table. Bussers tried to remove plates before we were finished. However, it did seem to work itself out as the night went on. Tapas were pretty good and satisfied us all. But the Flamenco was incredible! That is the reason to return."
