El Chorro was amazing-the view, food and service was impeccable! The remodeling of El Chorro was genius. They kept the integrity of the building while opening up and offering more to the public. The food was exceptional as was the view. I was amazed at the crowd level that was there at 5:00 p.m. I thought we would miss the crowd by dining earlier-we did not expect the amount of people that were there. Most were at the bar or on the front patio, which left the dining room less occupied. Again, I go back to the food. I had the center cut filet, which was the best piece of meat I have ever had in Phoenix...that says a lot. The huge, thick, perfectly cooked piece of meat melted in my mouth. Will definitely go back again and again.

The remake of the lodge is fantastic. Our disapointment came with the food. We loved the old flash fried lobster tail. Although the new preperation was tatsy it did not match the old way and only came as an appetizer. I was very disapointed with my lamb chops, although tasty there were only two and for $40 that seems a bit skimpy.

Gorgeous setting - loved the openness of the restaurant but thought the food was "okay". I looked at the menu of drink prices and was disappointed to see how high they were. I would never choose to go there for cocktails except for a "special" occasion. If the prices were reasonable - sure they would be toooo busy - I just hope they stay busy enough that they don't need customers except for special occasions.

  • I don't have words to describe

    Dined on 3/18/2010
I don't have words to describe how terribly disappointing our lunch experience was! The patio seating is very loud, crowded and tables too close together. Four of us ordered from the somewhat limited menu--2 beef tenderloin steak sandwiches which were tasteless, had little similarity to beef tenderloin and looked like a chopped Philly steak, with melted cheese running all over the plate. UGH. The thick steak & onion soup was odd, and the sandwich accompanying it was made with dry, stale bread. The trout was floating in some sort of oil along with some oily roasted potatoes and 4 greasy green beans. Despite the lovely remodel and the view, we will not return. Too many really fine restaurants in the valley to waste time on a poor one.

Our group went here with good intentions and the view was the best thing about the lunch! Our table was in direct sun and we weren't able to move until our meal came, which was about an hour and fifteen minutes after we got there, and we were made to feel like it was somewhat of an inconvenience. One person didn't get their drink for about 40 min. and had to ask for it twice. The shrimp Louie salad that I had actually did not taste good at all. The curry chicken salad that two people ordered was quite tasty. Two people in our party had to leave before the check arrived because it was taking so long to pay! Rough experience. Hope they get the kinks worked out!

We had an excellent table and view at our recent dinner at El Chorro. The food was extremely good, although the portions were a bit small for the price. It is a beautiful spot, and the seamless transition from outdoors to indoors make it perfect no matter where your table may be. y only negative comment was my first impression as we drove in: "Reserved spaces for fuel efficient cars". This definitley does not reflect the old El Chorro or old Arizona.

  • The reason for the Fair overall
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 3/14/2010
The reason for the Fair overall evaluation is due to tha fact that I had a reservation for 3 for Brunch--we, along with at least 6-8 other parties with earlier resrvations, had to wait over 45 minutes for our table, due to "problems in the kitchen". We were told they had 300 reservations that day, and it was the first weekend that had no rain, so more people came out--both lame excuses. We had to stand around until bar seats were available, and several people had to stand--they would not seat anyone. Our waiter was great--the food was good, but it will be a while before we go back--if ever.

Beautiful renovation, love the new look on the patio. Sticky buns and bloody mary's just as I remembered. But service was terrible, very slow. Excuse the manager gave -- kitchen is too small to accomodate the restaurant. Not acceptable, especially since you just remodelled. Give it a few more months before trying, let them work the kinks out.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 3/13/2010
The remodel of the Charro Lodge is terrific! The interiors and the facility grounds are quite inviting and picturesque. Our waitstaff was sub-par, however. Also, the food is good (but not fabulous) and is priced too high. Our group concluded that it is a great hang-out, and a great place to meet people and have a drink, but that the restaurant will lose people for dinner due to the pricing being too high. Also, a couple of our members commented on the reservations people being short with them on several calls to make reservations over the last month.

  • The best part of dining here
    OpenTable Diner Since 2004VIP
    Dined on 3/13/2010
The best part of dining here is when you can sit outside and enjoy the ambiance. Its been a Phoenix tradition in the spring for many years because of the great views and outdoor fireplace. However, the new management does not understand how to let you do this yet. They do not take reservations for outdoor seating through open table or by calling. When I arrived with reservations I waited am hour for outdoor seating and finally gave up. Yet, you look around and half the outdoor tables are empty--the are reserved for the bar area only-but not used. They also seated people outdoors that arrived after I did. The manager denied this, but I witnessed it 3 times. Know one of the new owners and you are ok to bypass the people waiting.

Went for a very special Birthday, got all dressed (most everyone there was dressed in street clothes??)anticipating a high-end evening we could have chosen anywhere. As far as atmosphere, service and food all met my expectations. BUT, so noisy and overly crowded (kids running around) more like a bar scene all of the wonderful things seemed to be forgotten - very unfortunate and very expensive.

We have been long standing customers at El Chorro. We felt disappointment regarding the lunch menu and the service. The server was not attentive. The menu items can be found on any Denny's menu, none of the items are notable. Our party or 4 ordered two breakfast plates and two BLT with A. Nothing special on any count. The building and space remodel are nice. The food is not notable or anything we would come back for. Our guests were first time visitor to the restaurant. They both srongly agree the experience was nothing special but we all enjoyed the patio on a nice Arizona afternoon. Sorry I just cannot recommend this place as an outstanding AZ experience any longer. A sad long time customer.

While known for their rack of lamb we both found that menu item to be very disappointing. The lamb was overcooked and the portion was small given the $44 price. The salads for both of us were lackluster and had little to no dressing. We had to request dressing for both salads. The ambiance is wonderful with lots of old Arizona charm and moderate noise levels. Depending on the time of the year outside dining is a wonderful experience. OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 3/11/2010
What a Transformation with its reopening 3 weeks ago!!! Absolutely gorgeous venue, all upgraded. We've known El Chorro for 30+ years and now it has been reincarnated as a hip destination! The Food is based on the "old" menu - but is better, updated in presentation and seemingly better ingredients. But it's big, very big - 400 diners Big! So the atmosphere is different, a bit "hotel like" with servers with name tags with their name and home city - almost a "banquet feel" to the place - not the intimacy of the Old El Chorro. A well chosen and sensibly priced wine list is a feature. BUT, the service was Terrible - probably a result of the brand new opening and not enough training. But they need to work on it to get the repeat business though.
