Diner Reviews
  • "Returned a second time with my son and he loved the suggestion (fish tacos) from the Manager, Felix. I have not been disappointed and plan to return. I loved the sampler because I was able to dabble with a wondrous variety of flavours. We made advance reservations and were able to bypass the line and enjoy our meal indoors. The outside is also welcoming and I noticed they also have heaters for when the weather becomes cooler."

  • "I enjoyed dinner at El Catrin. The food was good, and there were enough interesting things to make me want to go back. However, we told the server that this was our first time there and she went into a "these people are simpletons, and need to be walked through the menu, told how to order, and provided with reassurance that they are making good choices" routine. Noise level very high due to World Cup on giant tv screen."

  • "This is NOT a Mexican restaurant. The food is tasteless and very Canadianized. We had the fish taco and basically it was a piece of fried fish (like in fish and chips) with cole slaw on top of a taco. For the price they charge one would expect much better. Very disappointing."

  • "Photos on the website do not do the restaurant justice. The decor was intriguing, modern and traditional everywhere I looked. The food was also traditionally flavoured with inventive garnishes and accompaniments. Great flavours, quality, and freshness. I've travelled through most regions of Mexico and can speak for the authenticity. I'd highly recommend it for casual dates and even girls night out. I had the $40 tasting menu and left very satisfied. I'll be returning shortly!"

  • "The food is awesome! The washroom facilities are disgusting."

  • "After trying several times to get a reservation , we decided to go early Friday night and get in at 530. Patio was open so we ended up staying outside...incredible vibe, staff, food, drinls, decor, etc. HIGHLY recommend in or out!!"

  • "Went to celebrate my sisters birthday on Saturday at El catrin. We had a great time and really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. We are both big foodies and were a bit underwhelmed by the food. The food was still good bit nothing to brag about. The drinks were great and they had a great selection. I would go back but not in a big hurry to do so."

  • "I've dined at el catrin several times and I've always enjoyed it. My only issue on this occasion was that there was no indication that my reservations only held a table inside. On a summer afternoon no one wants to be inside!"

  • "Just fantastic food, drinks, service, and ambiance. A great place to go with a group of friends so you can try a lot of dishes and their great cocktails and tequila / mezcal flights!"

  • "Very disappointed with the food. The standard is nowhere near Toronto food. Tacos were sauggy, I picked up one and the pork fell at the bottom splitting te taco in half. Ceviche had no flavor. They couldn't even get guacamole right, it was pasty and under seasoned. Desserts just ruined it all. Cocktails...meh..I had been wanting to go to this restaurant for a very long time becuase everybody talked about it and I walked out very disappointed. I will stick to my usual taco places grand electric, paya cabana and la Carnita."

  • "I picked this restaurant for my wedding anniversary. We started with a guacamole, and it was tasteless. I ordered chilaquiles with chorizo and my husband salad with tinga. Both were ok, but not delicious. The sauce of my chilaquiles tastes as if comes from a can and the chorizo as frozen chorizo. My husband's food was acceptable, but the combination between tinga and salad doesn't work. Also, we had watermelon and horchata water; we didn't like them. I don't know which recipe the restaurant uses, but is nothing closer to the Mexican recipe. Despite what I'm saying, we had a good time. The restaurant has an impressive design, great atmosphere and our waitress was perfect."

  • "I've been here twice. Once for lunch and once for dinner. The atmosphere and decor is beautiful and a great photo opportunity but the food is lacking. Some of the meals are terrible tiny (crispy tortilla and ceviches) and others are tasteless and underwhelming (shrimp tacos and chicken mini burritos). I would only recommend the place for the new experience but not for the food specifically."

  • "The food was alright - needed more seasoning as most of it was borderline bland. Service was great, it was nice having the guacamole made table side. All in all, a good casual eatery for lunch, or a relaxing night out."

  • "We ordered the 7 course tasting menu and were told that there was a lot of food provided. Our appetizers came all at once and were very small - one tiny bowl of ceviche (which was for both of us), a bowl of guac and watermelon salad. The watermelon salad consisted of about 10 small cubes of watermelon and some garnish. We then waited over 25 minutes for our tacos to arrive - 4 small tacos (2-bite size each). Then we received one portion of braised beef- again, not very big but it was delicious. Then it was dessert with the churros and dipping sauces. The dessert was good but we definitely left feeling unsatisfied and still hungry. We won't go back or recommend to friends. There are many other better Mexican restaurants in the city."

  • "Good food, good décor and fun atmosphere. Had the waiters recommendations - and all was delicious. Cocktails were the best and reasonable bill. All good."

  • "As a lover of Mexican fusion, El Catrin is always top of my list for a meal out. This visit did not disappoint! We had a fantastic selection of vegetarian and fish based menu items topped off with spicy margaritas. Perfect evening!"

  • "We love great Mexican food and have been looking without luck for a place that delivers. We finally found our spot."

  • "service was awful. our server seemed to have too many tables and not enough time. food was a bad value for the quality and quantity you get, even knowing full well this is a tapas style restaurant. the plating of tacos was humorous as one taco from the same dish had 50% less meat than another. was looking forward to churros. they were dried out and cooler than room temperature. the table next to us got the same thing and we heard them exclaim that they were piping hot. we were too unhappy to bother begging for service from our server so at this point we asked for the bill which itself was another delay because our orders were somehow entered incorrectly. this place has gone way downhill since our last visit in march, we will NEVER return."

  • "We went on a night where a sudden rainstorm drove everyone from the patio into the restaurant which seemed to significantly increase the stress and tension amongst the staff. Our food took about 30 minutes to arrive and came before our drinks and when I inquired about it I had a somewhat short response about how busy they were. We ordered a couple dishes of tacos and burritos and while they tasted good they were soggy to the point where they were falling apart. That plus inattention to details like only giving us one menu, litter on the floor going unnoticed and candles left on the seat beside didn't leave a great impression. Great interior design but not enough to bring us back. Too many great mex places in TO to warrant returning."

  • "We had an early reservation and told our waitress that we had to leave by 7:45. With the waitress's help we ordered a number of sharing plates All came on a timely basis and were very good. We had some time and ordered a dessert which was fabulous and cappuccinos, which arrived at the table at 7:45 or too late to drink. Our waitress was no where to be found and when she did appear, there was a line up to prepare the bill. We finally said that we would return after the show to pay and just sat down before the lights dimmed. On our way to pay, we met a manager, explained the situation and were treated royally with free coffees and an adjustment to our bill. All in all, it was a very good night and we will be sure to return soon."

  • "The food and atmosphere/ambiance was amazing. But the service was terrible, not only did it take the food and drinks long to get to the table, the appetizer came before the drinks! So you can only imagine... the service was unattentive and forgetful. I had to ask the server 3 times for some extra chips for the guacamole. Service is EVERYTHING especially with all these new places popping up in the city... you can find somewhere enjoyable with great food and service."

  • "The service was spotty - drinks took forever, food came out very fast. The guacamole was made at table and was delicious, none of the mains were very good. We split 3 desserts among the table and they were amazing though, especially the churros. Overall, very expensive for the size and quality of dishes. The decor is beautiful - better as a spot to go for drinks rather than food."

  • "Ask for Juan to be your server - he provided excellent food recommendations. Service was prompt and food was delicious. Music was loud."

  • "We went with my wife and daughter, were looking for good Mexican that can accommodate Celiac's. While the menu is accommodating, the overall experience left a lot to be desired. The margarita that I had was too sweet, could not taste the tequila, at $11.00 you should. Mix tasted as if from a bottle. Guacamole and chips are excellent. Equites (Corn Salad) also best dish we had, but portions are very small and pricey. We had Flautos Des Res (beef) - very tender, but lacked something. Pork Carnitos again tender, but lacked something. Barbacoa (Lamb) was tender, but zing missing. Service was unfortunately poor, started out ok, but missed one dish. Odd considering it looked like a 1 to 1 ration of staff to diners."

  • "The variety and quality of food is very good and the ability to order many plates for sharing suited our group as we were able to sample many menu items on our first visit."

  • "we have been to el catrin before and it never disappoints - but it is busy, so make sure you make a reservation!"

  • "Friendly staff. Music is much too loud therefore diners were screaming at each other to maintain a conversation adding to the noise. By the way this questionnaire does not allow me to rate the noise level in the restaurant, I could only click "energetic", the place is NOISY. We ate very quickly and moved to another restaurant for dessert and coffee. Food is just "ok". Will not recommend to friends."

  • "El Catrin has a huge, vibrant patio, with bar tables, regular tables and lounge seating. Funky heat lamps and a large fire pit keep things cozy in the evenings. Both times I've dined there we have had great servers who are very familiar with the menu and able to describe or recommend items."

  • "Food is like eating in Mexico, the only hiccup is the portions, too small for the price."

  • "Was looking forward to some great Mexican food after hearing about all the wonderful reviews, but was rather disappointed. The food was, at best, average. Guacamole was prepared table-side and very fresh, but a bit bland. Baja fish tacos were freshly prepared but again, somewhat ordinary - nothing special and a bit bland. Sangria was very good and service was attentive and friendly. Noise level very high, and patio seating was not available for reservation, only on a first come/first serve basis, so we were seated indoors on a beautiful sunny day (line up for the patio was ridiculously long!). Overall, a very average experience."

  • "I like the ambiance at el catrin for sure. My suggestion is to have more vegetarian options though, Mexican food has tons of vegetarian dishes that would make a vegetarian like myself quite happy. I ordered the Huarache Oaxaqueno, and I thought it was a bit too cheesy, queso fresco would be nicer for this one. Service was great though, the server was very friendly and well -prepared to suggest good alternatives from the menu."

  • "Had brunch on Saturday excellent options from your typical greasy brunch. Huevos rancheros and breakfast burritos were amazing. Also I love that they take reservations. I'm tired of waiting in line in the morning at brunch places that don't take resos! Well done"

  • "Start with a warm, sunny evening. Add sangria and freshly made guacamole and tortilla chips on a patio with lots of character, fast and attentive service, topped off with a half dozen plates of tasty food and you've got an enjoyable couple of hours. I was there with a friend, our first time, but definitely not our last!"

  • "Great fun spot with loud music. Some of our food was pretty good but a few items were bad which we sent back and were taken off the bill. They also delivered 2 Incorrect dishes which were also bad."

  • "We loved the magic of being transported to Mexico - delightful interior design, delicious and imaginative menu and a warm and pleasant ambience. Service was a bit rushed, as we go there late in the evening - and staff seemed anxious to get home ..overall, a memorable experience and we will be back!"

  • "There was a delay in service at the beginning, but our server definitely made up for that throughout our stay. The service was outstanding! The traditional margaritas were excellent. The tortilla soup was authentic and delicious. The tacos were great and very satisfying. Although we enjoyed all the tacos, the beef taco dish seemed to be the best value... quantity wise. The two deserts ordered at our table were a smash."

  • "We visited El Catrin for dinner and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. The food portions are small but tasty (would recommend the braised beef)! Overall a fun place to experience. The music can be loud so I would not recommend if you were looking for a quiet , romantic evening. Great place for large groups."
