Diner Reviews
  • "Great ambiance and service. Servings could be more plentiful."

  • "It was my first visit to El Catrin, and I came specifically for the Mayahuel event. It was raining so it wasn't busy. We had a reservation and were seated right away. However, we weren't served for 20+ minutes. The only interaction we received was when someone asked who our reservation was under then walked away. We had to flag down an employee to ask when we would be served. When our waitress finally came, she didn't seem like giving us the time to help go through the menu (as we were new to the restaurant). The food was okay but I don't think I would come back. Our waitress seemed more interested in helping other tables. The event wasn't even special (we weren't informed on any drink specials, and we saw no dancing?)."

  • "Great atmosphere, good food, amazing patio. Small portion plates, perfect for sharing."

  • "The washrooms smelled worse than a bus depot washroom! Everything else was so special- ambiance, food, service. Would definitely return!"

  • "Great food. One of my favourite spots! I've been here many times and recommended this place to so many people. Very upset with the server this visit though. She was incompetent and did not seem to know what she was doing. Never introduced herself and made for an uncomfortable time."

  • "The food all came sporadically, and one person in our party of 4 had their food 15 mins ahead of everyone else."

  • "Delicious fresh food, professional and attentive staff and an evocative décor contributed to a memorable dining experience that I look forward to having the chance to repeat and that I have already mentioned to many friends."

  • "Chicago had the likes of Fronterra Grill and Hat Dance and I've been looking/waiting for a more upscale Mexican place in Toronto since I moved here 14 years ago. Although the reviews were mixed, I was keen to give it a try. We ordered the 9 course menu and they were just enough to fill us (the churros took us just past the "full" point...). We're not big eaters but we were hungry so I would say 7 courses may not be enough if you're hungry -- we were a bit worried until the last two courses came, which were both substantial (Octopus & lamb). The patio had a really great vibe, the food was more modern Mexican -- my favourite was the Octopus, which was so tender! And the charred corn was also great... and dont miss the sauces for your chips..."

  • "Pricey for the 'quantity' of food but having said this, it was just enough to satisfy the palette. Left feeling great...not hungry and not overstuffed. We ordered 4 dishes betweent the two of us. Bill was $70 with one liquor drink."

  • "A great night out! Love the food and decor and great service too!"

  • "The service was top notch. We received excellent advice and attention while we had breathing room to enjoy each others company. The food was exquisite! Enjoyed the experience very much."

  • "While the space is great, food is good, the service was horrible. 30 minutes to get drinks on a Thursday at 2 pm makes no sense."

  • "Really enjoyed dinner.........Liked the variety of tapas and the ability to share and try different things. The girls in red certainly added to the dining experience!!!!!!"

  • "Average, we've experienced better Mexican restaurants in the GTA."

  • "Worst service ever. Forgot one meal, finally brought it out after asking 5 times, then ended up bringing out the wrong thing. Argued with me that it was the right thing, even though I said I'd ordered it several times before and knew it wasn't, also it wasn't even anywhere near what the menu described it as anyway. Think: steak when you order fish. Argued some more, finally took it away and brought out hte right thing a minute later, no apology. Took menus away randomly, before we were finished eating and brought bill welllllll before we were done eating, even though we were about to order more. Never one water or drink refill for a full table of people either."

  • "Food was quite good and the menu was broad enough that most people can find something they will enjoy. Margaritas was very good and authentic. Service was very friendly but very very slow. It may have just been our waitress. We'll go back, but we'll just be prepared for slow service."

  • "Dining outdoors on a beautiful Toronto summer evening was delightful. Beverage options are very good. Restaurant offers one of the better selections of Mexican beers, outside Mexico. Food is tasty, but pricy for the petite portion sizes. Service staff were attentive and welcoming."

  • "After hearing so much amazing feedback about this restaurant, I finally got the opportunity to experience it for myself. I was most definitely not disappointed - the food was absolutely INCREDIBLE! The Chicken Tacos and house made guacamole are to die for! Being in the restaurant industry, I referred El Catrin to a couple who was looking for Latin American cuisine. I cannot wait to come back again!"

  • "We've been here before but found the bar staff so slow that our appetizers showed up before our drinks. When they did arrive they were good, but we're told the bar was so busy that reordering would take 'a while'. We finished our meal and instead of lingering with another drink, got the bill. Also, I get it is trying to create a bar type environment but the music was so loud, even the waiter complained to us. We'd go back, but not on a Friday night, but given how busy they were, I'm sure they'll be in different."

  • "I made my reservations online, when i showed up, they were not in the computer. Luckily they were able to accommodate. No more reserving online."

  • "We celebrated a birthday here and the ambience and festive touches (like a pitcher of margharitas) really added to the happiness we already felt. Very glad I had made reservations because the "no reservations waiting for a patio table" line stretched outside the long entryway. Because we were in such a good mood anyway, little service annoyances seemed trifling -- our server was very nice but they seem to have too few staff for the many tables and distances that have to be covered to produce food and beverage. All in all a great spot for a festive occasion."

  • "My friends who were visting from the Caribbean found this resto to be quite the find in the Distillery District, which is the spot in the Summer. Will continue to take visitors there. The service was great albeit the hostess, or someone else, forgot to record my visit which I booked via Open Table. I was shocked by this. Overall, a 9 out of 10. Highly recommend this venue to anyone visiting Toronto or if you are from suburbia looking for somewhere to have a few drinks and tappas-like food in the city."

  • "Returned a second time with my son and he loved the suggestion (fish tacos) from the Manager, Felix. I have not been disappointed and plan to return. I loved the sampler because I was able to dabble with a wondrous variety of flavours. We made advance reservations and were able to bypass the line and enjoy our meal indoors. The outside is also welcoming and I noticed they also have heaters for when the weather becomes cooler."

  • "This is NOT a Mexican restaurant. The food is tasteless and very Canadianized. We had the fish taco and basically it was a piece of fried fish (like in fish and chips) with cole slaw on top of a taco. For the price they charge one would expect much better. Very disappointing."

  • "Just fantastic food, drinks, service, and ambiance. A great place to go with a group of friends so you can try a lot of dishes and their great cocktails and tequila / mezcal flights!"

  • "Photos on the website do not do the restaurant justice. The decor was intriguing, modern and traditional everywhere I looked. The food was also traditionally flavoured with inventive garnishes and accompaniments. Great flavours, quality, and freshness. I've travelled through most regions of Mexico and can speak for the authenticity. I'd highly recommend it for casual dates and even girls night out. I had the $40 tasting menu and left very satisfied. I'll be returning shortly!"

  • "Went to celebrate my sisters birthday on Saturday at El catrin. We had a great time and really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. We are both big foodies and were a bit underwhelmed by the food. The food was still good bit nothing to brag about. The drinks were great and they had a great selection. I would go back but not in a big hurry to do so."

  • "I enjoyed dinner at El Catrin. The food was good, and there were enough interesting things to make me want to go back. However, we told the server that this was our first time there and she went into a "these people are simpletons, and need to be walked through the menu, told how to order, and provided with reassurance that they are making good choices" routine. Noise level very high due to World Cup on giant tv screen."

  • "I've dined at el catrin several times and I've always enjoyed it. My only issue on this occasion was that there was no indication that my reservations only held a table inside. On a summer afternoon no one wants to be inside!"

  • "After trying several times to get a reservation , we decided to go early Friday night and get in at 530. Patio was open so we ended up staying outside...incredible vibe, staff, food, drinls, decor, etc. HIGHLY recommend in or out!!"

  • "Very disappointed with the food. The standard is nowhere near Toronto food. Tacos were sauggy, I picked up one and the pork fell at the bottom splitting te taco in half. Ceviche had no flavor. They couldn't even get guacamole right, it was pasty and under seasoned. Desserts just ruined it all. Cocktails...meh..I had been wanting to go to this restaurant for a very long time becuase everybody talked about it and I walked out very disappointed. I will stick to my usual taco places grand electric, paya cabana and la Carnita."

  • "I've been here twice. Once for lunch and once for dinner. The atmosphere and decor is beautiful and a great photo opportunity but the food is lacking. Some of the meals are terrible tiny (crispy tortilla and ceviches) and others are tasteless and underwhelming (shrimp tacos and chicken mini burritos). I would only recommend the place for the new experience but not for the food specifically."

  • "As a lover of Mexican fusion, El Catrin is always top of my list for a meal out. This visit did not disappoint! We had a fantastic selection of vegetarian and fish based menu items topped off with spicy margaritas. Perfect evening!"

  • "Good food, good décor and fun atmosphere. Had the waiters recommendations - and all was delicious. Cocktails were the best and reasonable bill. All good."

  • "I picked this restaurant for my wedding anniversary. We started with a guacamole, and it was tasteless. I ordered chilaquiles with chorizo and my husband salad with tinga. Both were ok, but not delicious. The sauce of my chilaquiles tastes as if comes from a can and the chorizo as frozen chorizo. My husband's food was acceptable, but the combination between tinga and salad doesn't work. Also, we had watermelon and horchata water; we didn't like them. I don't know which recipe the restaurant uses, but is nothing closer to the Mexican recipe. Despite what I'm saying, we had a good time. The restaurant has an impressive design, great atmosphere and our waitress was perfect."

  • "We went on a night where a sudden rainstorm drove everyone from the patio into the restaurant which seemed to significantly increase the stress and tension amongst the staff. Our food took about 30 minutes to arrive and came before our drinks and when I inquired about it I had a somewhat short response about how busy they were. We ordered a couple dishes of tacos and burritos and while they tasted good they were soggy to the point where they were falling apart. That plus inattention to details like only giving us one menu, litter on the floor going unnoticed and candles left on the seat beside didn't leave a great impression. Great interior design but not enough to bring us back. Too many great mex places in TO to warrant returning."

  • "We ordered the 7 course tasting menu and were told that there was a lot of food provided. Our appetizers came all at once and were very small - one tiny bowl of ceviche (which was for both of us), a bowl of guac and watermelon salad. The watermelon salad consisted of about 10 small cubes of watermelon and some garnish. We then waited over 25 minutes for our tacos to arrive - 4 small tacos (2-bite size each). Then we received one portion of braised beef- again, not very big but it was delicious. Then it was dessert with the churros and dipping sauces. The dessert was good but we definitely left feeling unsatisfied and still hungry. We won't go back or recommend to friends. There are many other better Mexican restaurants in the city."
