A word from El Camino - Priority Seating
El Camino is a monument to the beach towns of Southern California, and SoCal surf culture in particular.

* This restaurant uses a Priority Seating style of reservation. Priority Seating means that your party will go to the top of any wait list when you arrive at the restaurant, and you will be seated at the first available table that will accommodate your party when your full party is present. To make a traditional reservation for a party 8 +, please call us directly.

The kitchen prepares truly authentic Mexican street food from scratch. The bar does artisanal tiki drinks. And, our large vinyl collection of surf music from across the eras, spins on the turntable around the clock.

Diner Reviews
  • "It was another great night at El Camino. The service was excellent and the food was great. We took friends with us and used the call ahead service through Open Table and it was flawless. The restaurant called on Saturday afternoon to ask us to confirm our call ahead reservation. We walked in at 8 PM to a crowded bar and packed restaurant. We gave them our name and were seated right away. Our wait staff were attentive and seemed happy to be there. To their credit, as busy as it was, we weren't rushed in and out. It is within walking distance of our house and I can see us hanging out there when the weather turns warmer. So happy it is in our neighborhood!"

  • "Went with a party of 8, we were seated between a large screen television and the speaker for very loud obnoxious music. We could not hear each other speak. The food was very spicy, food was forgotten, service was sad. Glad I went so I can cross this place off my list. Nobody in our party plans on returning"

  • "Food was good, spicy and different. If you dont like spicy foods you may need to ask for something non spicy. Drinks were very good"

  • "For the price the food was overrated. We ordered an appetizer and finished the chips with lots of salsa left over. We were not offered more chips. I ordered the sea bass and was brought the entire fish - head, skin and all. I didn't mind but would have probably ordered something else off the menu had I been told because I wasn't in the mood for that type of entree."

  • "The service was slow although there was an apology and a comp'ed desert."

  • "My husband and I love eating out but I have to be really careful with my gluten sensitivity. There were lots of great options for me and I appreciated the grass-fed, local meat selections on the menu! We had margaritas, which were outstanding and made by a hard-working bar staff. Great, spirited ambiance with a diverse mix of people all having a great time. We will definitely add El Camino to our list of regular stops!"

  • "Poor servce, under poured drinks I don't mind paying for an expensive drink, but when I order a margarita and the glass is half full! Food was just ok I would not go back or recommend."

  • "...is their answer to a margarita, and you should definitely try it. I did appetizers and tacos, and have no complaints. Their Pork taco was awesome!"

  • "Louisville is becoming even more and more known for food, and not just bourbon. El Camino's food certainly does not disappoint. A great little restaurant in the heart of the Highlands. I can't wait for it to warm up so my wife and I can return to enjoy the great outdoor seating they have arranged."

  • "Loved the fish tacos, the guacamole, and the salsas. The drinks are a bit pricey but still very good."

  • "El Camino has elevated the fusion of Latin Cuisine with Southern Style. The salsa flight offers a wide taste from the fresh green tomatillo to the dry guajillo chiles used in Latin sauces. Drinks can be very refreshing, from the traditional Margarita to the top shelf 23 years old Ron de Zacapa a Guatemalan rum. El Camino will inspire you to come back to try another dish in the menu. I know I will! So, venture out to the Highlands area and try some exotic ceviche, classic tacos or perhaps some chicken mole while sipping an intoxicating cocktail or and ice cold beer; you will feel like being South of the border and NO PASSPORTS REQUIRED!"

  • "Disappointed by the food and that it took 45 min to get a table even with "priority" seating. The food at taco luchador is way way way better and you don't have to pay the ridiculously expensive prices. It's a good place for drinks, but even those were ridiculously expensive. They could do better, but until they do, I will not be back."

  • "Everything about the decor is spot on. I felt like the experience and vibe of the room was an integral part of my dining. The food was delicious, reasonably priced and very fresh. I can't wait to go back in warmer weather to enjoy the outside patio area."

  • "Loud. Seated in Barbie size booths next to the bar. Half the night, people's coats, purses and elbows were on our table. Booths not made for adults with legs, let alone 3 people. 15 min for water to arrive, off she went again. 15 min later order drinks and apps. Food is average at best, way too spicy (Mex food does not have to be hellfire & damnation), drinks were less than average and way over priced. $115 later we were pushed out of booth by the bus boy. Apparently we didn't spend enough to justify lingering over the rest of our drink. I have never visited Silver Dollar and have no desire. No qualms at spending that kind of money on good food - but this wasn't that. Caters to hipsters who want to be seen and apparently have no taste buds."

  • "I loved the vibe & decor. The drink prices are more in line with Chicago or other metro city prices but are equally unique ... and strong. Of note, the ice "cubes" are hand cut from large ice blocks which adds an artistic touch to each drink. Queso Fundido was a great starter - the chorizo is a must add! I had the Cochinita Pibil (Berkshire pork shoulder roasted with achiote in banana leaves) - it was amazing and enough to share as an entrée or additional dish for the table. A definite redo."

  • "Third time in recent months. I've tried something different each time. Never disappointed. Frozen Margarita on the other hand - not so much - and $9.00"

  • "The food and service were excellent, and the atmosphere is lively and noisy. The menu has a great selection of traditional Mexican food and modern Latin cuisine as well. Prices are very reasonable $5-$25. We'll be back!"

  • "Atmosphere was great. Unfortunately the food and service were not The food was okay, but not worth coming back again. Thankfully we had no wait. If we'd had a long wait for this food, the experience may have been worse. My fiancé ordered the ceviche and we shared the chips and dips. The server highly recommended both. The ceviche was not that good. The dips were three salsas and guacamole. The guacamole was standard and fine. One of the salsas was good but nothin any different than the complimentary salsa at other places. The server told us one would be extremely hot. Unfortunately none had a kick. We both ordered a variety of tacos, which were good but again not great. Overall, for the price, we were disappointed."

  • "My fiance (very picky eater) says he'd eat every single thing on the menu. Definitely his new favorite place. I hope they change the menu up fairly often though because you could probably try everything in about five visits. A little on the pricey side though. We've been there twice now and spent $75 both times before tip. It probably doesn't help though that having one drink each will set you back $20-25. That would be my main gripe - drinks are very expensive and you don't really get much in the glass with the whole thing being full of (rabbit poo, my fav) ice. AND there's only one (pretty uninspiried, bourbon drink). Other than that, I swear we love it. It's a fun atmosphere, with fun food and very friendly staff."

  • "Its too noisey for us. It would be better if they put on some jazz instead of beach music. Portions were too small."

  • "We had a great dinner at El Camino, enjoying the lively atmosphere and excellent, creative food selections. While a bit hard to hear each other over the music and bar sounds, it was nonetheless a fun place to be on a cold night. Can't wait to try the torch-lit patio on a warmer night."

  • "Outside was very cool with fire pits and lighting, heaters, etc., but still too cold to sit out there! Good atmosphere though for a little warmer weather. Food was different, but good. I had the swordfish taco, small but tasty- only $4 and the Fresca salad which was also good, but too much type of greens I didn't care for. Husband had the fried fish taco($4) and soup($7), both which he enjoyed. Service was quick. We'll probably go back when it's warmer for the outdoor seating."

  • "It was late, but the service was responsive. The chips were a grade above most mex restaurants. I liked what I got (vegetarian) but my companions (omnivores) did not. The mole was especially not popular at our table. The atmosphere and decor seemed a little too try-hard."

  • "My husband and I had been looking forward to trying El Camino since we are HUGE fans of Silver Dollar. We ordered the chips and guac, which was good and enjoyed the presentation of the chips in the bag. The pickled veggies were amazing, but did not seem to go with chips. We each ordered a cocktail to start as well, they were good, but did not blow us away (like the bartenders do at SD). The glasses was filled with a really big chunk of ice or an amazing amount of shaved ice, which left little room for the beverages. We ordered two different tostados. The veggie was delicious, the chicken, not so much. The corn/crab dish was good and the rice was bland. The service was really attentive and quick, but we will stick to SD to fill out cravings."

  • "Food was good but my baja fish taco was cold when it came.I also got a dish with crab meat it was good but light on crab meat. Entrees seemed overpriced for what it was. 25-30+ for an entree at a mexican restaurant is excessive."

  • "4 of us went early.. at opening, actually, on a Sunday evening. As expected, seating was immediate, but the place got crowded and a bit more noisy in no time. My second visit here (apparently, my first was during the "soft opening" which was great, but incredibly noisy & crowded), and the experience was great. We (4) came for appetizers and drinks since it was early on a Sunday evening. Great service, very helpful wait staff, and the food????....... pretty awesome. Yes, a bit on the pricy side, drinks as well, but I'll (we'll) be back. Nice addition to the Louisville landscape."

  • "The atmosphere is vibrant and colorful which is a welcomed sight on a dreary cold fall day. The entire menu (minus 2 items, most desserts, and the beer of coarse) are gluten free so both my boyfriend and I had a lot to choose from. The was food exceptional and the homemade corn tortillas are unbeatable!"

  • "It's just difficult to pay what they are asking for Mexican food. It was good but not a standout for me. It was very noisy. The bar outside is adorable. I'll be back to try more, though!"

  • "El Camino will not disappoint for a fantastic experience. From the drinks to dessert everything is house made. You can taste the quality. Telera buns are amazing!! We were dinning with a vegan and the waiter had no problem steering her to menu items that would be appropriate. Don't miss this experience!"
