  • My first experience at El Azteca

Sorry to say that I am not a fan of Mexican food. I used to with only simple ones like taco, nacho and dipping. However, my boss asked our guests from Thailand to choose their preference (like Italian, Japanese, Thai, Canadian, Mexican). They would like to try Mexican food here. My boss himself is a real fan of Mexican food (his wife is Mexican too). So, he knows best where to go for it near our workplace. I must say I was impressed with the food. He ordered some nice dishes such as grilled snapper and rice. It was yummy. It was great my first experience at El Azteca. Sure, I will come back when I think about Mexican food.

I was recommended here by some friends, and I was extremely disappointed. The service was extremely frustrating. It took about 20 minutes for our first round of drinks, our food didn't come out at the same time and was 5-10 minutes before other peoples food came so people felt guilty about having to start without the others. Our second round of drinks took 38 minutes to come by which point we asked them to leave it as everyone was extremely frustrated and just wanted to leave. It was moderately busy and they used the excuse that they were "too busy" well I am sorry but you are a restaurant you should be able to cope with this surely. Overall not a good experience and have not desire to go back!

Got there early, no one else in restaurant. Had tasty tapas and drinks. Service was mixed. Guy who seated knew what he was doing. Young thing who served us missed a whole bunch of things, from taking not empty drink away, to not bringing cutlery, etc. Kind of ruined the great food and drinks.

Food are great, and price is reasonable. Our server was really good, and took the time to explain the menu and ingredients, and recommended some great drinks and desserts. i do not eat meat. He would recommend me the dishes with no meat, or requested the chef to take out the meat if possible. this is not a regular mexican restaurat. The dishes on the menu are more upscale, and the same goes to the restaurant environment and great service. Price was totally reasonable. Ate alot, and each of us has a drink. At the end, we each paid less than C$40. Service, food quality, environment and location, this is definitely a place i would come back again!

I am motivated to write my first ever online review. This is by far the worst restaurant experience we have had in years. A sign should have been an almost-empty room on a beautiful Saturday night when the adjacent Yaletown restaurants were all packed. I have a feeling this business is on its way out. Don't prolong their misery by patronizing them in the mean time. I had to shorten this in order for it to be posted, but both the food and service were unacceptable.

Sitting only 2 feet across from my friend I could barely hear what she was saying. First it was an extremely long mariachi performance at the other end of the restaurant (on and on and on) then a DJ set up at the table behind us. The food (veggie tapas-y things) was delicious, and the margaritas are exceptional. But with that noise level I'm unlikely to return for an evening dinner. Maybe lunch? Is it that loud at lunch?

The service was top notch the moment we walked in. I have some allergies and they were able to accommodate - which was very nice. Food was good. They will ask you for nachos and salsa to start - we said yes but found out later it was $10. However, the taste was amazing. Best nachos/salsa I've ever had. So I would recommend it!

The service was poor, at lunch there were two tables for one server, first the guy showed up with the wrong drinks order, then brought the food (fairly decent tacos) and failed to comeback to see how our meals were for quite some time, I wanted some lime that I only got when my meal was pretty much done . I was there with a client, I personally picked the restaurant and when she asked for a cup of coffee the server said that they were out of it, that they don't tend to have too much of it because people don't go to mexican restaurants for coffee (really? in Vanc?). According to him people go to mexican restaurant for tequila and beers. Anyway we had to cut our lunch short to go to starbucks.. who wants dessert if there if no "cafe de olla"

we had a coupon for a 4-course meal. we each had soup, shared a mushroom ceviche, then chicken breast in green sauce for me and pulled pork for my date. we shared corn cake for dessert. but every bit of food was hot. the heat overshadowed all the other flavors. and the heat just piles on, more and more. our mouth was on fire, by the end of it. we had to drink our cocktails and water a lot to cool down.

The team at El Azteca seem to go out of their way to make sure that you're going to have a good time and enjoy the atmosphere and food, there. They take pride in their many choices of Tequila, especially. Take a taxi and enjoy a flight of three tequilas if you aren't sure which might appeal to you. I think you'd be surprised. The Botanas (appetisers) are all really good and certainly sized to share. A favourite of mine is guacamole mamuca. Finally - we were there on a Friday night - there is live music with a really nice lounge feel to compliment the evening. It was a lot of fun, all around. Find them on Twitter, too at @elaztecavan or see the menus on their website at http://www.elaztecavancouver.com/menus

The food at El Azteca is amazing. We particularly liked the tacos de camarones, tacos de bistec, guacamole, and pollo en mole.... although there are many things on the meny we have not yet tried. The place is very comfortable and the first-rate staff never make you feel rushed. Also, the tequila selection is second to none in Vancouver.

As I am a Mexican food fan, I am always looking for new and interesting places to eat. In reading some of the reviews of El Azteca, I generally like to make my own assumptions. Sadly many of the reviews were on the mark, the food is generally very good, and very well presented, but the service although is very friendly and helpful were l, the kitchen is slow. The food however is well worth the wait and the proportions are great. We were there as a group which was fine, but if you there as a couple, the wait maybe to long. The atmosphere is nice and its a quaint spot, but having TV's is the restaurant definitely takes away from the dining experience, if I wanted TV's I would go to YTB across the street.

I loved everything about El Azteca; the food, service, and drinks were all fantastic! I was taken for dinner one Friday and, within 7 days, had gone two more times. The food is varied and delicious, and the drinks are wonderful. We treated ourselves to some very nice tequila and also tried some of the cocktails (the jalapeno delicia is a must for anyone going). Above all, the service was absolutely superb. The staff is very friendly and very good. I will be back soon.

I came here for Valentine's Day and I am taking into account that this review may not be reflective of how the restaurant is on a daily basis but this review needs to be done so the owners can hopefully improve. 7pm reservation. Restaurant had only 4 tables. Went with the set menu while boyfriend got salad and tacos. Appetizer was forgettable - chips were good but probably not made in-house. The roast pork entree came with salad but was set in a bowl so all the oil from the pork made the salad incredibly greasy and inedible. Pork itself was underseasoned and overcooked. Dessert was not great as well - custard was overcooked. Lighting above banquette seating flickered throughout our stay. Will not come back again.

The food was good I had chicken in a mole sauce and the artichoke for an appy. The mole sauce was great but the rice and sides with it were rather bland. The artichoke was not very good, it was difficult to eat but the sauce it came with was good. The service was slow. I ordered a glass of wine with dinner but never received it. There was four of us eating together but only half of the entrees came out and we had to wait 10 minutes for the other 2 entrees to come. By the time we waited for the other plates, our meals were cold. The service started out great but after the main course it went downhill. We did receive a discount on our bill but it was still not the best experience.

Overall,a good experience: Pros: 1)A modern venue; liked the fire strip in window & clean design of tables, room. 2) Staff were great. No rush on making our choice, answers to all questions, attentive through meal. 3)Wide variety and balance of traditional/modern/fusion dishes. Lovely spice. Yum! Cons: 1) Price point. It would have been a fantastic $28 3-course Dine Out meal; at $38 not quite there. 2) Sleek surfaces = high noise level at times. Enjoyed the 3-piece Mariachi band interval, but during it no conversation because so loud. Other diners may have had similar noise concerns - later the room's recorded salsa music seemed very loud, then turned down. Much better! 3) Some of the tables were very close together, hard to get in/out.

The food was bland and dry. We ordered the ceviche appetizer - this was made primarily with mushrooms but it was so sour, that sensation overpowered any other flavours we were supposed to notice. The tacos de chorizo was so dry - it only came with the meat. No vegetables. No salsa nor sour cream. I had to ask for sour cream - but there seemed to be miscommunication between the staff as one server said they didn't have any and another said they did. The soft taco itself was bland. The pork shank was uninspired. I don't think we'll go again. If you want good Mexican, there are many better places to go.
