EDWINS Restaurant is steeped in tradition and care for the community. Restaurateur Brandon Chrostowski offers a unique experience with Chef Gilbert Brenot's seasonal, classic French cuisine in the midst of Cleveland's Shaker Square. The restaurant has a unique mission; to do good and eat well, offering formerly incarcerated men and women with a second chance through hospitality and culinary arts.

The charming bar and lounge are a welcoming spot for before and after dinner drinks.

  • "Everything was great. Decor is beautiful, the food is fantastic and the service is great. Sitting by the fireplace in he back is one of the most romantic spots in Cleveland. The vegan options were great. Try the artichokes and you won't be disappointed!"

  • "Our first visit, a month after they opened, was outstanding. A server noted that my wife had torn the soft part out of the bread and just ate the crust, so, without being asked, came back with a bowl of crusty end pieces. The only complaint then was our main courses appeared to have been held too long under the heat lamps. This time everything was very good, but not outstanding. It seemed that this group of servers weren't as well trained and didn't have the sense of ownership that the initial group possessed. The food dropped a notch, also. Sweet breads lacked that slight crust, and the cream sauce was bland. The salmon was a little overcooked, and the braised rabbit a little too dry. Like I said, very good, down from outstanding."

  • "Edwin's is unusual. The food (classic French) was well executed and presented. It was a surprise to have very traditional French dishes. My husband had ris de veau and salmon with spinach and cucumber sauce. I had escargots and dover sole which was pricey but excellent. The servers were very attentive (but not intrusive) and some of the dishes merited table side service from the Executive Chef. What we figured out during the meal is that Edwins is part of a cooking school and the servers are in training for a culinary career. That's why there were so many people checking on each other. I'd recommend it for a special occasion. Yummy."

The service was quite attentive, and we certainly admire the owner's commitment to providing second chance opportunities to persons who have been incarcerated.   • "Edwins is a brilliant concept. They manage to couple some of the best food in the city, with a truly noble mission. Edwins is a non profit restaurant. They help people coming out of prison learn to work in a fine dining environment, and give them a second chance. Even if you put that aside, Edwins is one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The rabbit pie was outstanding! It was both flavorful and unique. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the preparation was fresh and different than anywhere I've tried. We ordered the soufflé in advance and that was an excellent choice! Light, fluffy, pillowy! Eat here!"

  • "I really wish there was a 4 1/2 star rating, because while Edwin's is definitely "Very Good" it only missed "Outstanding" by a hair! The service is fantastic - my only quibbles here are that it took the bar too long to make our drinks and the waiter was gone for awhile after his initial greeting. However, that may have been our fault as we first sent him away because we could not decide what to order off of great menu! Other than that, very attentive wait staff. The food is excellent. The artichoke appetizer was very light and tasty - even with a butter-based sauce. The cornish hen was also very well done - although it could have used a bit of salt. Great cocktail list - the Spring in Champagne was light, fruity and delicious!"

  • "Wow! What a surprise! We heard about the origins of this restaurant/ i.e., giving previously incarcerated individuals a second chance through acquisition and practice of the culinary arts. We didn't know what to expect. We found everything to be top flight/ service, food, ambience, wine list, incredible cheese cart, menu, personality, you name it. I had a pasta with a cream sauce and delicate pieces of cripsy, exceptionally tender sweetbreads. My husband had halibut wrapped in a crispy potato slice with green beans and a marvelous vinaigrette. We were too full for dessert, but next time we will order the Grand Marnier soufflé at the beginning (needs 25 min. prep). I can't wait to go for just wine and cheese!"

  • "What a wonderful concept - amazing food and creating capacity by using formerly incarcerated individuals as your staff. I've never had such attentive service in my life. All this and the food is amazing - I had the duck confit - beyond the best comfort food ever. My companion had a vegan portabella mushroom with sauce and other veggies - vibrant and lovely. We had salads first and deserts - an amazing creme brulee with the nice, hard crust and a very unusual and not very sweet (which I like) fruit and sorbet desert. Five stars even without the extra bonus of doing good in our community! My companion was a first time Cleveland visitor who is bi-costal (New England and San Francisco) and the restaurant was impressive to her. Good job!"

We don't get out much because we have 2 little kids but this warrants a return trip. Also, their mission, training and support described on their website and that you can see in action is refreshing and inspiring."

  • "Our dinner at Edwin's was delicious. Best coq au vin I ever had anywhere, including France. And the wine list was varied, unusual and very reasonable. I truly loved it there. Importantly, Edwin's (which is short for Education Wins) is not the usual fancy spot. It doubles as a both nice place to eat and a viable community asset, providing employment and training for disadvantaged young people. So, you should go in understanding that your server will look and sound different than the usual servers bringing you high end food. The service is just fine, btw, just different. We had a great dinner, in very nice space (it has a rustic, wine cave feel). I highly recommend it."

Please read their mission statement and you will understand why this is the most important restaurant opening in the area in quite some time. Had the Rabbit pie - more of a tart but well seasoned and left me wanting more. My wife had some excellent duck confit. Just wish the risotto was a bit creamier. I had the scallops. They were perfectly cooked Medium Rare gems. They could have had a bit more acid to offset their candy sweetness. Also a hint more salt would have really pushed this dish over the top. Creme Brûlée was a tad over cooked but caramelized wonderfully and had great flavor. Service was so warm and personable. They even topped off our wine at dinner."

  • "I decided to try this restaurant when I saw it come up on Open Table. Just getting back from France I wanted to continue the experience and was not disappointed. I had the scallops with duck and they were amazing my friend had the Duck Confit which was recommended highly and it was delicious. We split an order of Beef Tartare and was surprised and delighted at the flavorful, and still large portion we received. The lobster bisque was to die for. The room was warm and cozy with a blazing fire in the fireplace on a very cold winter night. The service was very attentive but overly so. They have a varied menu and I can't wait to go back and try something else."

  • "My friend and I had dinner at Edwin's on a cold and blustery Monday evening at 7:30. We were happy to see that they were quite busy. The service was superb -- attentive but not intrusive and everyone was welcoming. The food was excellent -- perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. I will definitely come here again not only for the excellent food and service, but also because of their philosophy and mission. Worth noting: they offer both vegan and vegetarian items and they sounded very, very good."

  • "Have been to Edwins quite a few times now and have had a wonderful experience every time. Coq au vin was delicious as was the pate. There have been comments from others about the inexperienced staff. It is well to remember that this is a training environment and you will not always have the "polished" server who has had years of experience. However I have always found, that for the limited experience the servers have, they are very accomodating, pleasant and very ready to please. So we need to "overlook" some mistakes and remember what "Edwins" stand for. I have had some of the nicest experiences dining here and will continue to support this great cause. It's great to see staff really trying hard to do the best they can!"

  • "The food and service were excellent, and the server brought out a birthday candle with dessert as requested. Although the staff was charming and friendly, there were a few too many people hovering over us and checking to see how we were doing. We had a leisurely dinner--a little over two hours---and didn't feel pressured to leave, even though the restaurant was packed by the time we left at 7:45. We would definitely come back, but not often, as the dinner was very expensive."

  • "I savored each bite. And I am not usually one to savor; I eat too quickly. I had one of the cheeses as an appetizer. The cheese cart arrived and each option that I asked about was knowledgeably described. My selection was beautifully presented with slices of fruit and a slice of quince "jell" that provided a palette cleansing. Every bite of each green in my salad was flavorful . My salmon spread on top with a grounded blend of cucumber & horseradish--yum. The side vegetable was a first for me--steamed cucumber. And I had some of the best decaf I can remember; a wonderful dark roast. Service was attentive and well timed. I would have given the ambiance 5 stars if we hadn't been at the entrance."

  • "Given the laudable back story on this restaurant (providing ex-convicts training that will lead to employment) one hates to be critical. The classical French menu is ambitious and for the most part, well executed. The portions are generous. However, Edwins' pricey menu puts it in the "fine dining" category where one expects polished service as part of the experience. While the wait staff was personable and clearly trying hard, the servers do seem unsure of themselves and a bit amateur."

This restaurant with a mission didn't immediately reach the top of my "must try" list, which means unless there were some bugs to work out, I unnecessarily deprived myself (and others) of a fantastic dining experience. Good on many fronts, the only complaint I could dream up is perhaps the wait staff was a bit TOO attentive. But, hey, I'd rather deal with that problem than it's opposite. Food was excellent, wine was, as usual, a price performance, excellent wines at reasonable prices. And ambiance, etc., all combined for an outstanding experience. The good cause thing, yes of course, but even without that, you owe it to yourself to try Edwins."
