Diner Reviews
  • "Edgar is consistent, timely, and a great destination to entertain clients. Service is friendly and the menu has plenty of options."

  • "sticky table, dirty floor, piles of dishes at the service stations. over priced menu with few options. I got the romaine lettuce and added shrimp, and that's all it was -- a bowl of chopped lettuce with a few shrimp dropped on top. $$ and NOT worth it. They advertise a lunch special outside, but it is not on the menu. When I asked the very surly waiter about it, he dismissed it and said it "was no good". I am so disappointed, as I'd hoped to find a business lunch spot close to my office. Instead, I was embarrassed that I had suggested the place to my guest."

  • "Nothing special... It felt as if we were inconveniencing the service staff..."

  • "I can't wait to try out their brunch and breakfast. This is a good restaurant. Always hits the mark."

  • "Very nice hotel restaurant with solid american classics."

  • "The restaurant has been moved from a unique, absolutely beautiful room that was especially nice for special occasions to more cramped space in the front of the hotel that looks like every other restaurant. The food and service is still excellent but the ambiance is far below the previous location. Was very disappointed since this lunch was to celebrate a college graduation."

  • "The food was very good . . . certainly more than you typical "hotel restaurant." The chef personally came out from the kitchen to make sure everything was to our liking."

  • "Our party had to wait 10 minutes just to find someone to seat them. Once seated the service was poor as well. This has happened on more than one occasion, so much so that we have chosen another place to hold our breakfast meetings."

  • "At a recent business lunch, placing an order required flagging down a passing server after 15 minutes at the table. Getting the check and then processing the credit card required the same approach. The food was typical for a large convention hotel, fair quality with indifferent execution. I expected better from the Mayflower. When I tried twice to provide feed back after the lunch, the phone rang unanswered both times. All-in-all, Edgar seems to be a ruddderless operation, slipping by on its location. Almost any local restaurant in the same neighborhood would be better."

  • "What a drab spot in an otherwise luxurious hotel. Bare tables, indifferent service, OK food. I was meeting out-of-town friends for breakfast, and we had hoped for something more memorable. Instead, we found ourselves in something closer to a diner than a restaurant, with service so sullen that we wondered if the day had begun with a shower of pink slips. Dull, blah, boring. Dine at home on a box of stale cereal instead. At least you won't have to pay a $25-$30/person for the experience."

  • "I came to the Mayflower looking for a brunch, as was promoted by Internet: one of the top 10 places in DC for a Sunday brunch but there was no brunch and a very modest breakfast buffet. Was as great disappointment. If you don´t serve brunch, let´s the market know..."

  • "Had business lunch. Took a while to seat us despite reservations - there was a line and slow at hostess stand during lunch hour. Food was ok. Good seared tuna on Nicoise salad, but rather overpriced for what it was and portion size."

  • "The space is very handsome, my meal (salmon) was great my companion's food (Steak) came out medium well, but was ordered as medium rare. I ordered a Vodka Soda, but a Vodka Tonic was delivered. The gentleman delivering the water to the table basically dropped the glasses on the table. The desserts took about 30 minutes to arrive. I had heard from friends that the service was mediocre, unfortunately that is an accurate characterization. I hope management hears the feedback and addresses the issues."

  • "Food was great and so was the service. They really extend a level of hospitality that surpasses most other restaurants in the DC area."

  • "Went there on a sunday at noon after having found the place using the open table app's search category: "great for brunch". Then learned that they no longer served brunch... (not because of the time of the day, just because they decided to stop offering brunch) Don't know about the food though because I decided to go somewhere else. The place was deserted and the lunch menu seemed boring."

  • "Edgar restaurant, the eatery in the mayflower Hotel, is a true gem fie breakfast lunch or dinner . I've eaten here a dozen times and each time was terrific. Service and food ? Excellent! A little irritation : $5.00/iced tea abs a $5 charge doe each refill. Sane with sofa. Otherwise it was terrific!"

  • "First, with a reservation, I waited 5 minutes for the hostess to show up, while the non-working bartender saw me waiting and just stared at me doing nothing. Once seated, we waited another 8 minutes for someone to take our beverage order, only for a dirty vessel of cream to accompany my carafe of coffee. Orders taken, we waited patiently for our order, food was placed - but the server left so quickly, we couldn't even get a refill on our waters, tea, coffee. If you really need breakfast, and you are staying at the Mayflower, go a block up Conn Ave and go to Luna Grill."

  • "The service was slow, we sat for a while before someone took our order. When we got our food, the pot pie was not very hot, and was more sauce than anything."

  • "Great Service and selection. The breakfast buffet never disappoints. The server was attentive and friendly, and even brought us to go cups to take our hot coffee for the cold walk. Great for business meetings."

  • "This restaurant has a lot of choices for breakfast. Nothing really creative, but the staples are available and everything was good."

  • "I was excited to try this place since the menu looked awesome & it is close enough to work for it to become a regular spot. Our waiter rushed over & just said "Drinks"? Never told us his name, asked if we had any questions about the menu, nothing. He asked what we were ordering about 25 minutes after we sat down. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich which sounded delicious with a chipotle mayo, avocado, swiss cheese, lettuce & tomato. The avocado was not a freshly cut avocado but seemed to be guac spread that is stored in a plastic bag. It was also little off color so perhaps it had been sitting for a while. I understand restaurant week is hectic but it wasn't that crowded. We didn't partake--don't feel like we should be penalized."

  • "Everything was quite pleasant, especially for a restaurant in a hotel. The salad and pasta were excellent. I was however really disappointed when I saw the cost of a cup of coffee - $6.00! My three course lunch was $20, so the coffee costs nearly a third more, and it was not even very good. It was cold and I had to ask for a fresh cup."

  • "Stopped at Edgar Bar for a late night nightcap and eats. All was terrific. They welcome you at any time and serve like you were the first ones in."

  • "We tried Edgar's for a work holiday lunch last week, and from the website it looked rather promising: a classy hotel restaurant that's advertised as the perfect spot for "power lunches" among the DC elite. We planned to devote no more than 1/1.5 hours to lunch, so we were looking forward to speedy and time-sensitive service. Unfortunately, this is not what we encountered. Our server disappeared for 10 and then 25 minutes, and we could not complete our lunch within our planned timeframe. Instead, we wasted our time waiting for incorrect dishes to be brought out in a very slow manner; so much for a so-called "power lunch". I would recommend this establishment with caution, since it may not be the most reliable choice during the week."

  • "Being the Mayflower, I had great expectations from Edgar. It was incredibly average. I felt like I was in any run of the mill restaurant in a hotel."
    Dined on 12/3/2013
  • "Tea was lovely. The food was varied, tasty and filling. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The tea itself was fragrant and multidimensional."

  • "I have dined at EDGAR a few times and consistently the food and ambiance are good, but the service is poor. On my last visit, our server was friendly and patient, but the others who were helping him were impatient and were unfamiliar with the orders in my group. Don't let this stop you from dining here, however. I have seen much worse service in DC and in other cities. The menu has a variety of selections to satisfy most tastes and the food won't disappoint. Political "celebs" frequent this place, as I have seen them each time."

  • "Had the opportunity to choose from several area tea "rooms" and chose edgar for the menu options. Delicious. Water for tea was boiled, not just from a faucet...tea was fresh and fragrant. Treats were divine, champagne hit the spot, wow. I am eager to sample what else Edgar has to offer. Loved the $10 valet parking option too, since it is on Conn. Ave."

  • "The service and ambiance were great at Edgar Bar + Kitchen, but the food was amazing and a pleasant surprise considering the restaurant is in a hotel. Highly recommend the restaurant and one of their signature cocktails, especially the pom-blackberry balsamic bourbon."
    Dined on 11/16/2013
  • "The Edgar has a nice ambiance in a beautiful hotel. However they packed too many people in one booth and they missed the mark on the food. Their reputation for breakfast is good but the Bourbon French Toast came with Maple Syrup instead of the Bourbon sauce and was very dry. The service always seems lacking because their staff struggles with English every time we visit."

  • "The decor is nice and food reasonably good. Service is reasonably attentive but may be handled by more than 1 waiter. As a guest at the Mayflower hotel, in which Edgar is located, I dined more than once with pretty much the same experience for lunch and dinner. I did not ask for either bread or water, and neither was offered; however, a guest nearby complained and it was brought to him by special request. All in all, it fits the bill when convenience is what one is seeking."

  • "The music is way too loud for a dining experience. If you are looking for a place to eat where you can enjoy conversation, look elsewhere."
    Dined on 9/26/2013
  • "Meh - that is not how you should want your restaurant described, especially in such a lovely place as the Mayflower. What saved the place on the rating was the truffle fries - yum. But my medium rare hamburger was dry as a bone. And apparently there was a shortage of plates because they kept trying to take ours away. Very annoying."

  • "We loved our very nice quiet full breakfast at Edgar's in The Mayflower Hotel. After a wonderful night's rest we really enjoyed Edgar's professional service and delicious choices for a full to light breakfast. Pam, Charleston S.C."

  • "My colleague and I enjoyed Edgar Bar + Kitchen for lunch. Our meals came out super fast (which is a plus for a weekday) and were tasty."
    Dined on 8/9/2013
  • "Service was exceedingly slow. Salmon was terribly overcooked... we sent back both to the kitchen and the next two were also very overcooked. Appetizers were well done and the couple with us had good steak... cooked well. Overall experience was disappointing, especially for the price point."
    Dined on 6/9/2013
  • "I ordered "Duck and Eggs". The whites of my poached eggs were runny even though I ordered them "medium" which every other restaurant serves as cooked whites. When the food was brought to our table the eggs were missing and I have to flag someone down to ask for them. Edgar advertises a "Bottomless Champagne Brunch" for Sunday. Both my and my friends glasses were several times empty and we had to ask the glasses to be filled. Certainly not the level of service I expect for a restaurant associated with the Mayflower Hotel."

  • "Had a nice meal with a business colleague at the Edgar. Convenient location. Tables are not too close together and noise level is fine (at least at lunchtime) so we could have a decent conversation. Food was good. Our server was cheerful but a little confused; perhaps he was new."
    Dined on 5/20/2013
  • "Going in I was hopeful that the Mayflower's renovation would be an exciting new restaurant to add to the list of places I frequent, but after comically bad service (our waiter brought the wrong food to the table next to us four times), and an uninspired menu, I can honestly say it was one of my worst dining experiences in DC. Sadly eating at Edgar was about as good as you could expect from a Marriott restaurant in some Podunk town, not worth trying."
    Dined on 5/17/2013
  • "But the poor service, mostly bad attitude of the wait staff, and the noise level are too much. I've stopped having business lunches there."
