Eddie V's never disappoints, gives outstanding value for the dollar. White-jacketed servers and great ambience would lead you to think it is a high-priced restaurant, but in fact the cost is moderate. Well-thought-out business practices ensure that the diner feels well attended to, the kitchen is always consistent, and portions are generous. We recently brought friends who have lived in Austin for 20+ years but had never been to Eddie V's--the lady had scallops and said they were the best she had ever eaten. We are lucky to live fairly close. We made a reservation and got a table by the window with a beautiful view. We all ended up ordering seafood entrees and there wasn't a drop of food left on anyone's plate. We are 3 women with lots of experience eating out at fine establishments all over the world. We were seated quickly in a prime spot and treated with the utmost care. We ordered a very nice bottle of Pinot Noir and had fabulous oysters and soft shell crabs with salad and other delectables. We were so full, we didn't order any dessert, but our waiter brought out two fabulous plates of the most extraordinary desserts - gratis! The service was superb and the maitre D was just delightful and remembered us from long ago. This place did both well. The lobster tacos were tasty and the Kung pao calamari appropriately spicy. The tuna steak was monstrous in portion sizing but still tasted delicate. A Chet's special bacon wrapped filet was pricey at $48 but well worth it. The 7 of us were squeezed into a very awkwardly set-up chair/booth combo, away from the gorgeous hill country view and right next to two giant tables of prom kids. The servers were very professional and helpful (had a flashlight ready because it was so dark in there no one could read a menu). However, there was a large gap in service, with at least 30 minutes lapsing between our salad course and our entrees. I would expect such an established restaurant to be better prepared for handling a busy night with large groups. The food was very good; standard surf and turf fare. The special of a filet and shrimp was ok but not worth almost $50. A tiny filet with 2 small shrimp. Pass.
The biggest problem was the pace of the meal. We had an app, soup, and entree with a wait time of about 30-45 minutes between courses. A bit excessive in my opinion.

We prefer the Arboretum's gorgeous view and somewhat calmer setting, compared to the bustling 5th street location where valet parking is just about the only option. Even so, we enjoyed ourselves immensely and this is still one of our favourite restaurants in Austin. Highly recommended. There are other places we have gone to in this price range but Eddie V's food beats them hands down. We get there early to sit at the bar for drinks and apps and the bar staff is great they most by name and will treat you great any drink on the menu is great but they will make you anything you want and if you are not sure they will surprise you and I have not had anything I didn't like.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellence is Eddie V's StandardI always enjoy looking at the extended wine list, but usually pick the Stags Leap Artemis. We took out time sipping the Artemis and munching on a perfectly chilled shrimp cocktail made with shrimp the size of chicken legs and sauces with fresh horseradish we mixed to our prefered strength. We also enjoyed the sashimi. My wife described it as "butter" because its so good it seems to melt in your mouth.
The ladies ordered small filets, which they said were delicious and I had the bone-in filet. I think it is the best cut of meat in town.

The have a great selection of red wine (particularly the pinot noirs) and inovative cocktails. Service is always excellent and view is amazing.
All of this only applies to the arboretum location.. Bone in filet and New York steaks were nice, too salty though as I was drinking water all night.
