  • "If you are going to be famous for Southern fried chicken, make it good! There is no way it should come out warm but soggy. The mac n cheese was just noodles with cheddar sprinkled on top and warmed up. I had to ask for a new biscuit because my first one was cold and rubbery. I won't be back."

  • "We were there for a family gathering before we went to a jazz club a few blocks from Eatonville. I told our waiter we were under a tight time constraint. The service was timely, the food delicious and the ambience comfortable! While my husband and I had dined here before, our 4 guests had not! All 4 said they would return. It is on my list of DC Must Dine Spots! Of course, as a Proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., I love being in an ambience paying homage to Soror Zora Neale Hurston!"

The bread was a tad dry this time around. Other than that my "Grown and Sexy" drink was delish and the waitress was pleasant. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "The food was good. The kids wanted typical breakfast food-so that was our main challenge. Our waitress Latisha took the time to help us get the kid's orders in. Definitely a big help. All in all my husband and brother in law enjoyed brunch so I would definitely come back and also recommend Eatonville in the future."

  • "The restaurant was not that crowed for dinner, waiter was nice but for some reason the food( an entree salad, an fried tofu entree and fried chicken dinner took about 55 minutes to bring out. When the waiter was questioned about 40 minutes in he said they were busy. I ask for a manager and the manager was terrible she spoke in "restaurant industry lingo" so only by father who retired from ownership of two restaurants knew what she was talking about. She offered finally to comp three desserts, and when asked why she just didn't comp the entree salad for my Dad. She said she told the waiter to offer us side salads. Hmmm offer a free side salad to someone who ordered an entree salad ...She was Clueless!!!..."

  • "I had the catfish and grits which was excellent. My piece of catfish was huge and I loved the greens that came on the side. However, I have to rave over their hushpuppies. Whoever thought of stuffing hushpuppies with shrimp is a genius. My friends, who love the restaurant, recommended that we eat there before attending a concert at the 9:30 Club. What a great idea. I will definitely come back."

  • "Biscuits, collards and fried green tomatoes were delicious. Brunch entrees are average. They sound so delicious on the menu and once they arrive are fairly bland. I ordered a chicken dish which was supposed to be smothered in gravy. The gravy was non-existent. The macaroni and cheese was more oily than cheesy - almost inedible. And why does a restaurant that seemingly appears family oriented NOT have a kids menu. That is probably the most troublesome thing. Young kids either have to pay $14 for a meal or eat the mac and cheese. Keep it simple if you're going to do that. Red Velvet pancakes, French toast with pecan crust, etc., Yet no kids menu for which you can have regular French toast or regular delicious buttermilk pancakes!"

  • "I enjoyed the decor, the drinks, the food, and the very attentive service! Was here for an early dinner on a Monday so it wasn't terribly crowded. I imagine that with the tables so close together it might get very loud when busy. I had such a hard time choosing what to eat but it was all delicious and I must return to tackle everything I have been eyeing on the menu!"

  • "Eatonville takes what could have been a nondescript space and turns it into a very inviting atmosphere. The high ceilings open up the room, without creating an echo effect. There is an upper tier/balcony, with tables over looking the main dining room. Good for couples, for families, or for large groups. The vegan choices are reasonably good, although one would hope for a better gumbo from a New Orleans-themed restaurant. The service is polite, but often not very experienced. A nice bar menu. Outdoor seating, too."

My gf had the fried catfish. The only set back was they didn't acknowledge my open table reservation. I had to write that I was there."

The place reminded me a lot of Busboys and Poets. Definitely worth checking out for brunch; one of the few restaurants to take brunch reservations."

Room is very large (try and get up on the balcony if you can) so even though the tables have a lot of space around them, you feel like you are in the middle of things.   • "Heard great things about this place but for whatever reasons it did not live up to its expectations. The hostess & other front end staff were great. Our waitress must have woke up on the wrong side of bed - my futile attempts to get the waitress to smile and cheer up did nothing to boost her spirits. We ordered and the food came out quickly and pretty good. Tracking down “Debbie Downer”–AKA our waitress was another task. I would have left it alone but I really needed that Coke! LOL. So after she came my Coke, that I asked for in the beginning, I insisted on the check because home girl was killing my vibe and I just could not deal with that anymore. Other than that, the experience was good, nothing like touring DC and its dining options!"

  • "Having just returned to DC from SC, I was skeptical about how good Eatonville's Southern food would be. Luckily, the restaurant had creative dishes and many tasty cocktails to choose from. The cornbread muffins were a great start, which we paired with salads. Not a standout salad, but I'm sure other main dishes would be more exciting and flavorful. Good menu, fun scene, and enough seating to avoid long waits for dinner."

  • "We decided to have an impromptu graduation luncheon for 11 people on Saturday after my daughter's high school graduation at the shrine. I made reservations that morning and our table was ready when we arrived. When we arrived they were still serving brunch. For the most part everyone was very happy with their food. The catfish and grits were the table favorites. My son enjoyed the spinach and mushroom omelet. Nice for a mid-day occasion. "

  • "The service was absolutely great. I would suggest making reservations. We walked in, didn't have to wait, immediately sat down and was greeted by the service. I was with some foodies (they are particular about their food) and the waiter has no problem explaining the dishes. The hushpuppy appetizer was to die for and the drinks are pretty fantastic. I actually have been there a few times and particularly thought my out of town guest would enjoy it. AND THEY DID. Highly recommended. "
