After months of living in the city and not having been to Eastern Standard I decided to meet a client for a drink and afterwards met my wife for dinner. Atmosphere was great, food was mediocre. After all the hype I thought my experience would ave been better...

Interior is relaxed tetro elegance. Our waitress was not flexible when my friend asked for a tequila sunrise( she was foreign, Russian or eastern European hense the rigid mentality) she made my friend feel like she was asking for a drink from Mars, didn't even leave it up to the bartender ( she ended up ordering wine) I orfeted one of their specialty drinks( was not impressed. Glass looked like one from my moms cabinet from the60's,no trendy garnish like an herb stick. Was not impressed. Back to my friend: she ordered a salad and didn't want the blue cheese dressing that came with it. Again the waitress made her feel uncomfortable and didn't know how to make a substitution for the dressing. Overall it was not the experience I was expecting.

Eastern Standard has become my favorite restaurant in Boston. It's the first place I think of when someone comes from out of town and I want to impress them. The food is always outstanding, and the service is routinely superb, as it was this past Tuesday night. My friends loved the raw bar selections (especially the oyster choice), and the very creative cocktail options. I could have eaten three or four of the roasted beet salad appetizer. It was that good. For dessert, we had the Butterscotch Bread Pudding (an old favorite), the house-made coconut ice cream, and the Chocolate Mousse Cake. My friend who's also a foodie thought the mousse cake would be boring, and was stunned at how nuanced and delicious it was.

I had both dinner and brunch at Eastern Standard, while visiting my son at BU for parents weekend. This turned out to be a great spot for meeting up with my college student, and while the atmosphere was somewhat upscale, it was comfortable for him to show up in shorts. Both dining experiences were excellent. My server on Friday night was especially great, as my son arrived very late (after dinner was actually served) and the server kept his plate warm, and in no way hurried us through our meal. I will definately return to this restaurant.

I have eaten at Eastern Standard many times -- at least twice a month. It is a solid, reliable choice for a business breakfast or lunch and excellent for after work drinks. Waitstaff and bar staff are knowledgable. Here are two drawbacks - the menu is tired and the coffee is not good. Minor points to be sure in the overall scheme of things, but room for improvement.

We were celebrating our anniversary in Boston and chose this restaurant. The ambiance is very nice. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. My husband had the hake and really enjoyed his meal. I had the half roasted chicken and it was mediocre. I asked for the apple tart without ice cream but it came with ice cream and it took quite a while to correct. My husband had the ice cream of the day and liked it very much. We will probably return.

We eat often at Eastern Standard and almost always find it excellent. But on our last couple of visits, things have not run so smoothly. This time, we had an excessively long wait for our food. When it came, the steak was delicious and cooked very rare as ordered. But my dish and the side vegetable were both totally cold and needed to be replaced. The servers were, as every, very gracious and accommodating, and the management did the right thing by reducing the bill. Eastern Standard is still one of our standards, not least for the excellent service. But it seems no longer to run with all the predictable excellence that it used to. Let's hope that they pull things back up to the previous level!

I had lunch with a friend on the sidewalk patio. The outdoor space is nicely done and comfortable but it can be noisy, being in the middle of Kenmore Square with buses and trucks going by. Our waiter was friendly and the service was fine, except that we were not offered any coffee or tea after our main courses were finished. He just brought the bill without any interaction. I had the Nicoise salad, which was very nice, although a bit over-dressed with vinaigrette. It could have used a few more lettuce leaves to make the portion a bit more satisfying.

If I rated the food based solely upon the Smoked Pork Porterhouse, then I would rank the food as Outstanding. The bone-in cut was very juicy, flavorful, and was accompanied by a well-chosen garnish of apricots, scallions, and pickled mustard seed. Our waitress suggested a Tempranillo which paired nicely with the smokey pork. The side dish of grilled broccoli was also outstanding. Broccoli is among my favorite vegetables; I cook it for myself and have frequently ordered it while dining out. The grilled broccoli at the Eastern Standard was the best preparation I've ever had. It wasn't blackened, just grilled sufficiently to concentrate the inherent flavor. I didn't order appetizer or salad; so I can't provide a more extensive review.

Two of my friends and I came here for breakfast on a Friday morning. We really wanted brunch with brunch drinks, but it was a Friday. I figured Eastern Standard (known to have good drinks and good food) would have no problems with us ordering drinks on a Friday morning and I was right. The waitress did give us a strange look but didn't say anything and willingly gave us a drink menu. She was knowledgeable about beer options, and was quick to return with coffee beverage (with alcohol) options from the bar. My friends thoroughly enjoyed their food and drinks, as did I. The bartenders are as good as any in the city, the somm & other wine peeps know their stuff. And the food is always good. It's a go-to when you don't want to worry about service and food. Some nights, you don't want to gamble on something new. There's a reason this place has been around-and busy-so long.

I can always count on Eastern Standard for an unforgettable experience. I went on Sunday to celebrate a birthday and our dinner experience was even better than I expected. The manager Chris took the time to recommend us cocktails and then later spent some time with us helping us pick a wine that was unbelievable. Damon was our server and took really good care of us. There was a pretty good amount of people there for a Sunday night, but he made us feel like we were his only table. The entire time we felt totally unrushed, and were able to enjoy probably the best dinner experience I'ce ever had. Also, if you have never had the rib eye steak, you need to. Ours were cooked to perfection. Bread pudding was fantastic!

For such a well-regarded, and well-placed, restaurant, the menu is extremely limited. Eight entrees, four sandwiches (including a $9 grilled cheese). I expected so much more. The fois gras mousse is very good, though they skimp on the baguettes (you'll have to ask for more, they only give you six). I went with a Cuban sandwich, which was okay (was there mustard? I don't know). Two Cuban sandwiches, the appetizer, and a couple of drinks amounted to a C-note.

After paying $18 for valet parking, I had to wait over an hour to retrieve my car from the valet. The waiter clearly did not notify the valet that I wanted my car and the car was pulled up at the adjacent hotel well down without my being notified. The food was ordinary with the exception of the hangar steak which was so tough that neither the steak knife nor my teeth could penetrate the pieces. The special Monday pork cutlet was ample, but tasteless. The service was slow and smug. And the noise level made it difficult to hear ones companions.
