Diner Reviews
  • "This was our second time here and our first time sitting outside which was absolutely beautiful. We sat right next to a little pond with fish in it, and there were little lanterns, candles and tiny Christmas lights on. So nice. The guacamole and mussels were really good, but my Caesar salad w/shrimp was actually so gross that I didn't eat it. Lettuce was wilted, and there were tons of tiny shrimp which had been sauteed. I'm used to 4 or 5 large grilled shrimp...these almost seemed canned...ewww. Our waiter was competent, not overly friendly though. I'd go again for the atmosphere and order something different!"

  • "When dining with people with food problems (allergies, etc.) it is wonderful to dine where the wait staff know the product and are willing to help with adjustments. Thank you East of Eighth for such well trained and personable staff"

  • "The food was very good, but I only had a salad. The outdoor garden was superb- quiet and beautiful."

  • "nothing amazing but nothing bad. friendly service in a somewhat out-of-date feeling room. Garden salad was plentiful (though served on a plate too small to toss it - would be better served in a larger bowl) and the added salmon was very generous. fair price, fair food, fair service - easy place to do a basic business lunch."

  • "Quite decent and generous meal at good price. Good bread bowl. Dessert less exciting"

  • "After reading a few yelp reviews on brunch in Chelsea, we decided to go to East of Eighth. The food was decent but the eggs were too greasy for my taste. The menu was decent but overall I wasn't impressed. It was noon and the restaurant was almost empty the entire time. It also seemed to be mostly elderly people. Overall it wasn't a terrible experience, just not what we were expecting/"

  • "Enjoyed dinner here before the Irish rep play. Pre-fixe menu a good value of 20$. I enjoyed the Jamon Croquettes while my friend had the onion rings - not that crispy for appetizers. I had the Lamb burger - could have used more Harrisa in the yogurt sauce and ,y firend enjoyed the pork chops. Desser was unusual combo of apple and pineapple crisp tasty and friend enjoyed the crème caramel...Great bargin"

  • "The special was a filet mignon. I had asked for mine to be rare, and it was a medium cook; my dining companion asked for medium rare filet mignon and it came out medium well. The service was horrible. Once our waitress found out we were not drinking alcohol, she never made an appearance at the table until it was time to pick up the payment."

  • "We enjoy this restaurant and chose their July 4 special. It was better than we expected. Chicken, ribs, corn on the cob, onion rings, sweet potatoes. It's a shame July 4 doesn't happen more often."

  • "Great food, service is a bit slow. I wish there were more like it in my hood!"

  • "I was delighted to be introduced to this restaurant by a dining voucher. My friend and I agreed that we would be happy to return. The food was well-prepared--we both had sesame-crusted tuna--and the service was well above average. There were plenty of choices on the menu."

  • "The title says it all. Nothing too fancy. But the good is good, as is the service."

  • "We enjoy going to East of Eighth to sit in their "backyard" and enjoy our brunch. Food is always well prepared and service is consistently good. What more can a person ask for."

  • "Bread basket good. Entrees were good. Nice to sit in garden area."

  • "Had a very nice dinner at East of Eighth.. We sat in the garden right next to the little pond. I had the Chicken Roma- very good! Chicken was perfectly cooked and the arugula and artichokes were perfect!"

  • "With prices sometimes lower than neighborhood diners, better food and service, and much more comfortable, East of Eighth is a Chelsea gem. Look for their lunch and early dinner specials as well as frequent promotions. I love their garden."

  • "We were in NY for ABFF. We found this spot searching through Open Table. Food was good; delivered in a timely manner. We sat in the back garden which was really nice. The breeze made it just right and the service was on point. I would go back again and I would recommend to others."

  • "This little neighborhood restaurant is actually larger that it appears. From the small bar on ground level to the surprisingly laid out second floor for dining. Found the food very good, and despite the wait for initial service, the waiter was charming and attentive, especially as the place was very crowded. Even with the place being full, it was a lovely experience. Noise level rather quiet, plenty of room between tables to enjoy without being cramped, and the food was excellent. I will definitely return. And, although we were too late to take advantage of it, there is a pre- theater menu served until 6:45."

  • "Walked down to the restaurant from the Garden before going to the Billy Joel show. Had moderate expectations given the reviews. We ate out in the garden area and the service was very good. The calamari appetizer I had was very good bit I thought the tuna entrée was great. The house cab was surprisingly good and I received a full glass, not just a taste. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting some good food while in the Chelsea area."

  • "Great food, especially the lobster, asparagus and avocado salad. Went there with a groupon, and will definitely go again. Good pre-theater and Sunday night specials."

  • "Really enjoyed everything and look forward to returning. Great value for manhattan!"

  • "Met a friend for lunch and we took advantage of the special lunch menu, which was terrific. I usually eat in the garden, which is one of the reasons I frequent this restaurant in the spring, summer and fall, but it was closed. We ate at their upstairs dining room, which was nice, but still prefer the garden."

  • "The friendliest place in town. Meet all Chelsea in the bar or restaurant. Diversity is it's hallmark."
    Dined on 6/17/2014
  • "Restaurant has pre-theatre as well as other menus that are a good deal. Food is not “gourmet” but is good. Outdoor garden. Went with 5 other people and we could hear each other."

  • "Good location. Efficient wait staff and multiple menu choices. All in all better than average"

  • "I've eaten at East of Eighth several times and have never been disappointed. And I've recommended this place many times to friends."

  • "Maybe more of a bar scene rather than a dining one - food wasn't bad but nothing was stand out either."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "We stopped in East of Eighth because it was convenient to where we were walking and we didn't have time to research a place to go. We were glad we did. It has a great neighborhood feel, good food and great service. We went back for lunch the next day and got the same feel for lunch. Would recommend it to anyone."
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "This place is confused. Its diner food but they're presenting themselves as quasi-fine dining. It needs Gordon Ramsey or Jon Taffer. Just avoid it."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "Just a really nice neighborhood place. Very consistent and the service is always just right."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "We were a group of 12 sitting in the back garden room. We all enjoyed our dinners. Two gluten free diners loved the choices. we will be back."

  • "We were told by the hostess we could not eat in the garden. It was a beautiful day, and no explanation was offered, just "the garden is closed". I guess I should have called ahead, since the garden was one of the main reasons I chose the restaurant. The restaurant did not seem crowded, so I don't think it was full. "We invite you to bask in the relaxing atmosphere of our beautiful garden" If the garden is closed, an explanation would be nice. We were meeting family for lunch who had just arrived in NYC. Disappointing."

  • "East of Eighth is a beautiful place with the bar downstairs and the dining area upstairs. We didn't sit at the bar, but it seemed lively. The experience overall was ok. Great place if in the right company, but nothing amazing. If I were to return, it would be on with another groupon and with my mother because she would enjoy the simplicity of the food, which was nice and tasted healthy, but not flavorful and memorable. Without a groupon or some sort of coupon however, the bill isn't worth the visit. "
