Diner Reviews
  • "I always have a great dining here, whether alone or with friends. The service is outstanding and the food always extraordinary! An excellent vale here also, whether ordering from the Main Menu, Pre-Theater or Italian Night as I did on this latest visit. Highly Recommended."

  • "3 of us had the price fixed dinner (early bird!); $20 and excellent. Well worth it."

  • "Eight of us had dinner at East of 8th recently. Our table was in a terrific location, and the ambience was so pleasant; we could talk at a normal level and hear each other. Our server was pleasant and attentive, and the menu has a good selection of options, so that there was something for everyone's taste: our group had, among other things, pasta, salads, pizza, and fried chicken. The food was very good. Everyone in the group thought East of 8th was a great spot and we had a lovely evening. Thank you."

  • "East of Eighth is one of the few restaurants we keep going back to, time after time. Not only is the food really good, creative, and generous, but the prices are also very easy on the wallet -- especially the early evening dinners and Sunday dinner special. Overall, it is hard to do better than here."

  • "An oasis of peace and quiet in Chelsea. Convenient to the galleries. Tables well set out, not crowded. Food interesting, well-prepared and healthy. Wine servings generous. Service extremely friendly and efficient. When I come in to the city from Jersey that is where I always have lunch and I have never been disappointed."

  • "This restaurant is my favorite in Manhattan. I come in from NJ to attend concerts, the Opera etc. and always know that I will have an outstanding dining experience in all ways at East of Eighth. Nick Tino"

  • "East of Eighth had a limited brunch menu. Our party felt hurried. A person repeatedly looked over my shoulder to see if we were through with our brunch. The staff was neither warm or welcoming. We wouldn't return. Sunday morning brunch should be relaxed and comfortable."

  • "The food ranged from okay to send-it-back inedible, with one outstanding dessert, the espresso chocolate roulade. The service was helpful, and they tried to make it right, though the substitute clearly came from a disorganized kitchen, with components having sat a long time waiting for the rest of the plate."

  • "We were a group of six, seated by the large window on the upper floor on a perfect spring Saturday. Aside from a weird, unhospitable attitude from the host, we had a very pleasant and leisurely brunch experience. Everyone enjoyed their food: french toast, steak and eggs, duck quesadilla, and a delectable blackened shrimp and strawberry salad. The noise level was perfectly comfortable both for those wanting mellow conversation and for those with kids. Overall we were very pleased that we chose to eat here."

  • "1st impression was of the bar area where it was dirty and dingy. Leftover glasses and napkins from previous patrons were not cleared while we were sitting for 30 minutes. When we got to our table, napkins, glassware, and silverware were stained and grungy. Why o' why did we stay. Food was less than edible except pizza. It pains me to write anymore, Stay away."

  • "I frequent the area and never noticed it. The only true bad thing is has two levels and bathrooms Are unisex on main floor. Need to put two on second floor"

  • "This restaurant has grown in popularity over the years and that is deserved. Good food, service and ambiance. There is a bar in the front but don't let that deter you. They have a beautiful upstairs and an outside room in the back. Highly recommend to people who want to show an out-of-towner a "New York style" place."

  • "the service was proper. We did not have to wait long for seating, for table service or for the arrival of our meals."

  • "Delicious food and very responsive waitstaff. There were minor alterations to our meals which they readily facilitated, and we were able to get a dinner discount with tickets to the Irish Repertory Theatre nearby. Great place!"

  • "East of Eighth is a warm friendly neighborhood restaurant. Where the food and service is always on point. Not to mention the reasonable prices and varied selection of food options. There is something for everyone, I have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. A true Chelsea neighborhood gem."

  • "Went with a party of 10 for brunch on a Sunday. Many other big parties as well as a crowd in general. Wait staff was amazing. Patient, on point, there when you needed them. I was really impressed. Food is good - price is really nice for the prix fixe. All had a great time!"

  • "Service was good. Our waiter was personable; however, food was just ok. Nothing to rave about."

  • "Friday Special of Pan Roasted Mahi-Mahi had "crispy" eggplant on the bottom topped with escarole, mahi-mahi & sauce. Unfortunately, the eggplant was no longer crispy. The flavors were decent but the textures were all much the same. Mom's meatloaf was ho-hum, it could only be from a mother who lost her taste for cooking."

  • "The brunch was great. we went for a birthday celebration and had a very nice time. The service was great. the brunch was perfect."

  • "I've been eating here several times per year for many, many years and it hasn't once disappointed me. Granted, their food / menu remains the same, but that's what I like at times. A consistently reliable, friendly local "haunt" that always meets my expectations. Never once did I visit this restaurant and find the food or service below par. Salad is always the same....wonderful. Entrees are always the same....wonderful. In my opinion, living in Manhattan with all its many "pretentious" restaurants with ever-changing chefs and menus, it's nice to know that there are places like this...."ol' reliable" restaurants where there are no surprises!"

  • "You can always count for East of Eighth to give you a good meal and very good service. A plus, as I have said before, is that you can have a conversation without shouting at the people you are with. Very relaxing evening."

  • "This is a great place to eat after a movie next door - the staff is always attentive and friendly, the wide selection on the menu will keep you coming back again and again and they always offer a great fix prix and daily specials - and it's very affordable!"

  • "This small, but quaint restaurant packs a big punch. Great brunch and a good atmosphere. Strong drinks and great food!"

  • "We tried this place on Valentine's Day of all days, and my date and I were quite taken with the selections that were offered. Without being a vegetarian restaurant, there were still plenty of options to meet everyone's tastes. Our waitress was pleasant, friendly, and very accomodating. We ordered a thin crust pizza and the zucchini spaghetti pasta dish. Both were amazing and the generous portions allowed us to take some leftovers with us. We had several other stops to our evening, and the food kept well enough to break into much much later on the subway ride home. It was cold by that point, but still tasted excellent!"

  • "it's great that you can make reservations here, which is rare for brunch spots. they had our table ready when we got their, both the hostess and server were super friendly, and the restaurant had a nice vibe. we ordered off the prix-fixe brunch menu, which is a fantiastic deal ($15 for a mimosa or bloody mary, coffee or tea, muffins and bread, and one of a long list of delicious sounding entrees. if you get a second cocktail it's also 1/2 off). would definitely recommend for a pleasant, hassle-free brunch."

  • "You can always count on a good meal at East of Eighth. And, as opposed to many restaurants in NYC, you can have a conversation without yelling at the person you are with. Wait staff is always pleasant and they never rush you through your meal. Go and enjoy!"

  • "A great place to take friends and family. Nice enclosed comfortable garden area on the main floor. Not too noisy with a nice mix of neighborhood people. Food was very good, well prepared. Bar area downstairs is isolated from the dining area so you don't get the bar scene if all you want is good food and moderate chit chat. And they give you a reasonable glass of wine, not some 1/2 glass."

  • "Had a lovely time, excellent food, and the perfect waitress. She was super accommodating, allowing us to order one or two items off the prix fix menu even though we got our entrees from the regular menu and brought us an excellent desert and roses for valentines day. To be funny I tried ordering some sushi after the meal since she'd somehow managed to produce everything else we'd asked for; she didn't miss a beat and quickly returned with a plate of pickles... well played! We had a lot of fun and will definitely be returning."

  • "I have been dining many times at East of Eighth over the years. It was great this time to enjoy the food, service etc. as usual, but this visit was even better, because I came in out of the miserable snowy weather after a miserable trip via public transportation from NJ. A real winter Oasis!!"

  • "We had dinner here before a comedy show at the Gotham Comedy Club, it was a cute little restaurant, nice food, and friendly service. The best veggie burger I've had in the USA :)"

  • "East of Eighth has been THE neighborhood favorite for over a decade. It's like eating at mom's if mom was a very good cook. The wait staff is longstanding and quirky ie very Chelsea."

  • "This is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant. I have had many brunch and dinners here and have not been disappointed. The menu offers a wide selection (so that I am not bored) and the food is well prepared. The service is good too. I would recommend a requesting table in the outdoor garden as it is wonderful."
