  • "We were so excited to try this place! Has been recommended by everyone. Service was horrible with waiter blatantly ignoring us and taking forever to take our order and bring drinks and such. The food was even worse. Out of the 9 rolls ordered - only one was edible. And the noodle dish that our guest ordered - it came as a soup with pork meat the size of pork chops floating in it and horrible meatballs and half hard boiled eggs - all served with a ridiculous plastic spoon - how are you supposed to eat it - and the flavor was nasty. All in all - very very very disappointed. For sure not worth the time or the money"

  • "Our reservations were made for 7:30pm. We received our drinks at 8:10pm and our food at 9:37pm. When the waitress finally brought our drinks, we asked if we could have split checks, to which she blatantly rolled her eyes. When our food came, she informed us that the kitchen was closing and if we wanted anything else, including dessert, she needed to know ASAP. We hadn't eaten our dinner, and we had to think about dessert? Interesting. It was a special occasion, and our waitress put a damper on the entire evening. I would think twice before celebrating a special event here again."

  • "For the amount of money you are paying you think the service would be spot on - but it is quite the opposite. We usually come to East By for the good sushi, knowing we are going to get horrible service and wait FOREVER, however this time was the last straw. We waited 20 minutes for a drink - had to ask for water, waited over an hour for even edammame to come to our table (you can imagine how long everything else took) and were not offered compensation of any kind."

  • "The special sushi rolls were delicious. We ordered 8 rolls (7 different types), and all were tantalizing delights. Our waitress was wonderful too. Our only wish is that the 8 rolls would have been served closer together in time. The time delay makes it hard to have a lunch within 1 hour. Our table received the first roll and the next 6 did not arrive for over 15 more minutes. The last roll took another 20 minutes thereafter."

  • "Our server was great, very attentive and knew the menu and made some very good recommendations. All of our rolls were excellent except for one, the surf and turf, we had it once before and it melted in your mouth. Other than that it was a terrific and enjoyable dinner."

  • "The food is fantastic. It's pretty and it's tasty and it's almost exactly what you would expect from a high end restaurant in a ski town. As many times as I've eaten here, the food never disappoints. Unfortunately, the service is hit or miss and sadly, the folks who own the place have adopted the attitude of "special orders DO upset us". My wife has a high sensitivity to gluten..should be safe in a sushi restaurant right? However, if you ask them to switch out the regular soy sauce for the tamari, their eyes light up and they tack on an extra buck for every item you request them to verify as gluten free.....Really? Seems highly opportunistic and greedy. Does the wheelchair guy get charged extra too? Thinking twice before we go back."

  • "Love East by Southwest and I hadn't been there in 6 months. We took our 9 year old for his first sushi. We ordered the child's sushi plate. Big, expensive ($11) mistake. He hated it and it looked very strange to him. Should have stuck with the Cali roll but took suggestion from waiter. It was a bit busy but when my husband and I were done...our son hadn't even received his food. When we asked our waiter, the hostess AND the bus boy where it was they said "Sorry! We're slammed!" Um...I frankly don't care if you're busy. It's not a rare occurrence there. Get it together! Smile and get the food, don't make excuses while in stride to another table. POOR service."

  • "I made reservations for a birthday party. I love this restaurant and everything I have ever had has been fabulous. However, there were a few things that irritated me. First, our reservation was for 12 people...I made the reservation a week in advance but when we got there we had to wait 15 minutes for our table. Second, they don't serve Coors Light...in Colorado?? Third, they wouldn't split our ticket...even after I specifically called ahead and asked for the tickets to be separate. Our server was friendly and the food was fabulous as usual, just disappointed ibu the little things..."

  • "We've always loved East by Southwest, but it can get hectic, loud, and crowded on weekends. This time we went on a Tuesday night, and I requested a quiet table away from the door. We sat in the area behind the fountain/water wall, and it was wonderful! We had the most attentive service yet, and the food was amazing. Our favorite was some spicy tuna cakes that were a sushi bar special. Wonderful - and very creative!!"

  • "I was very happy to see a kid's menu that did not have a burger or chicken fingers on it. The choices includes beef skewers, tempura with shrimp and veggies( which the kids ate!), buttered pad thai noodles that were gluten free, and even a sushi platter for kids. The "regular" menu was fabulous. The fish was very fresh and beautiful presentation. We ARE going back soon!"

  • "Ate on a Friday night - great restaurant for a group/family who isn't sure what they want/likes different things - we had a mixture of sushi, other Japanese, Thai and Korean food - all very good in large portions. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the seafood in a small ski town far from the ocean or a major airport. Prices were very reasonable given the large portion size - many of the first courses could have been entrees. Restaurant was busy with what appeared to be mix of tourists and locals - chopped up layout from what appears to be successful expansion into adjoining space."

  • "We went for dinner with friends on the last night of my mother's visit. They had a great big booth ready for us based on my reservation. The food came at different times; my husband finished his very small entrée before the rest of us got ours. I found my meal inconsistent from the last time I was there, just not as good. The service was good, not fabulous. Still a great, fun place to go."

  • "East by Southwest just doesn't disappoint ! We love the sushi, and it is always fresh and interesting. There are regular entree's, but we usually opt for a noodle dish, sashimi or sushi. The Chef always has special and unusual offerings as well. They have a excellent Happy Hour from 5:30 to 6:30, which makes for a great early meal. I cannot say enough about how GOOD the sushi is , considering that Durango is a smaller town, but don't hesitate to try this place. By the way, they also offer wonderful Thai style dishes , as well !"
