A word from Dyrons Low country
Dyron Powell and his wife Sonya love to travel. Over ten years ago, they were fortunate enough to happen upon the lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia. There they found relaxed lifestyles combined with one-of-a-kind culinary tastes. In their opinion, it is the greatest place on earth to slow down and enjoy great food and great friends.

Joined by Executive Chef, Randall Baldwin, they opened Dyron’s Lowcountry Restaurant in Mountain Brook to share their love for the culinary offerings of the region. It’s a place for those who have been to revisit their memories and refresh their pallets and a place for those who have never been to get an authentic taste of the unique foods.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food and atmosphere at Dyron's is always awesome. Upscale dining without being "stuffy" or pretentious!"

  • "This was the second time my husband and I went to Dyron's and we had every reason to expect a nice dinner. But due to the server's rude behavior, our evening was pretty much ruined. I asked several questions about the menu, and his answers were curt and unhelpful. I had to ask three times for our bread basket and I honestly felt as if I was bothering him, even though it was only 6 pm and the restaurant not crowded. I suppose we've been spoiled by Frank Stitt's servers who give superior service every time, whether your there for a light supper or a four course meal. Next time, when I have $150 to spend on a night out with my husband, it won't be at Dyron's."

  • "The food was very good. Our service however was awful. If you wanted to make a training film of "what not to do" our server could have taught a 300 level course. The service was so bad and thoughtless we started laughing about it. If we had not been there to celebrate my fiancé birthday I probably could have enjoyed the black humor a little more."

  • "Dyron's has become my new favorite restaraunt in town. I've been several times over the last couple of years and every time has been outstanding. They have excellent Southern dishes in a very nice and relaxed atmosphere. Also, the service is very good."

  • "I am never disappointed with Dyron's! The food, service and ambience are my kind of place. It is like a neighborhood gem you would find in New York and yet is right here in Birmingham. It is definitely one of my "go to" places."

  • "Dyrons Low Country was very a delightful experience for my two companions who had never eaten there before. I have never had a bad experience at this place. I had the grilled grouper and so did one of my friends and the other had red snapper. I think they are going back this weekend!"

  • "Took care of special needs for guest with allergies and food was great."

  • "Basically I was surprised at the "low country " look of the restaurant as I was expecting something more upscale. It is very rustic with an unfinished look, especially the floor. However, can't beat the food as it was good as anywhere and I do mean anywhere, as we just returned from NYC and this food would do just fine there. Hard to make duck delicious and they did a great job. However, we went there for 24th wedding anniversary and would have preferred something more refined and romantic. Live and learn. We will be back when we just want to eat well."

  • "We were a eclectic group and everyone loved their food!"

  • "I don't come home very often, but when I do, I love going out to the newer places to see what is happening in the Birmingham food scene. Dyron's has the food figured out! The farm fresh approach to low country/Southern cuisine hits a note in my heart as someone living between AL, LA, and NC. The grouper was flavorful, but the star of the dish was the succotash; add McEwen's grits with it and it doesn't get much better. The disappointment came in the service. Our server seemed about as uninterested in us and the food as possible. We never got an introduction, I had to practically prompt her to give us menu descriptions or recommendations. On top of that, she continued to try to lift items off the table before they were finished!"

  • "I normally do not write reviews but my experience requires that I praise Dyron's. We went for a family birthday celebration and had a party of six adults and two children in high chairs. The hostess put us at a large table in a corner where we had plenty of room and were out of the way of other diners. The waiter was very attentive. Most importantly, the food was outstanding. I highly recommend the gulf snapper, shrimp and grits, venison, duck breast and fried chicken. All were very good. I can't say enough good things about Dyron's."

  • "Food and wine were equally delicious. And this is coming from a food and wine snob. The ambiance was nice as well. If you want a more energetic vibe, eat in the main dining room where the bar is. If you want it to be a little more romantic dinner, eat on the covered porch. It's quite charming."

  • "This has become our Sunday "eat place" before we head back home after a great stay in B'ham. EVERYTHING is GREAT!!!!!!"

  • "My husband and In Laws ate at Dyrons for a special occasion last thursday. Our dinner was simple, visually appealing plated and most importantly, Delicious! We eat at upscale restaurants often as our kids are now out of the home. This was a pleasantly upscale meal in a mostly quiet atmosphere. We could enjoy our conversation and were not tightly squeezed into other patrons. We are still talking 4 days later about what a great experiance we had. PS. Ask your server about the Choc Molton cake! It has a 15 min prep time but is fabulous!"

  • "My boyfriend and I love Dyrons for an upscale brunch or date night. It is not inexpensive (entrees around $15 to $28), but the food is always excellent in a fun, smart casual environment. The fried chicken in biscuits is not to be missed for brunch!"

  • "Dyron's didn't disappoint. The food was excellent, especially the baked oyster dish. The duck was perfectly done as was our mahi. A few too many cucumbers in the mahi dish, but very good overall. We will be back."

  • "The food was very good and the service was great. The waiter was very knowledgeable about wines. We sat in a booth that had throw pillows, and the grand kids curled up ith them after eating. Birthday guy had the venison and said it was very good. They cut and served a birthday cake for us. We'll definitely go again."

  • "We ate at Dyron's Sunday after church. The food was delicious as always. Our son tried one of the speciality sodas. He enjoyed the taste. My daughter is very picky. The waiter made changes to her order without any problem. Wonderful eating experience. "

  • "I always enjoy visiting Dyrons. The atmosphere is nice but not stuffy. The service is wonderful. The wine list is great. Our food was superb. I will be back."

  • "We've been to Dyrons twice. Both times the food has been very good, and the service has also been very good. I haven't been blown away by either experience, but neither have I been disappointed. It's a great place for a nice meal out."

  • "This is a charming local neighborhood restaurant that is frequented by the surrounding community members of Mountain Brook. Always great food and great atmosphere. The server we had, we've had a couple times, is just down right rude. She is always short of patience and never willing to accommodate the customer. We almost asked for the manager last night because she was so rude. I will leave names off the post but we did get hers. She refused to ask the chef about swapping out sides because of a food allergy and refused to let me choose items that I could eat. Simply stated that the chef would allow no changes because food amounts were limited. Then said I could order what I wanted as individual "sides". Made no sense if food is limited."

  • "Was told they had a new chef. I liked the old chef better. The food has a different taste. To me, the food is not as good but still good. "

  • "Had one ofthebest dinners ever in a packed house! Cosmopolitan was delicious: tomato salad with smoked bacon and avocadoand other goodies; fresh and perfectly prepared and lightly fried softshell crab; and divine bread pudding. Service excellent and highly recommend!"

  • "We had a delicious brunch on Easter Sunday. Our table was in a good location. Our reserved table was ready in a timely manner. Our service was good and the food was outstanding. We enjoyed our dining experience and highly recommend Dyrons."

  • "The food was excellent but the wait for the food was not acceptable. A large table next to us got their entrees before 3 of our diners got their gumbo and chowder. We all were starving by the time the soups were served and those of us that did not order a soup were left to watch with no bread or bisquits on the table. My son ordered a beer with his meal and got the beer about the time he was finished eating. Although everyone enjoyed the food, I am not sure I would go back. They should have been better prepared in the kitchen for Easter Sunday."

  • "Dyron's is a superb place for Sunday Brunch! Bloody Mary's and Mimosas are great but the food to follow is outstanding. Omelet is fluffy, biscuits flakey, and the Hang Town Fry just perfect!"

  • "Food was wonderful. Had a sampling of several dishes(we shared!) and all were very tasty. Biscuits were Southern best!"
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "There were 4 dining with me and our tab was over $330 and no bottle of wine just each had a mixed drink. One of us had half a dozen raw oysters and they were all the size of a dime. The red snapper was well prepared cost $33 but was prepared well. One salad was split between two of us and it was good. I guess my biggest complaint is the price we spent was as much or more than Highland's Bar and Grill. The noise level was a nuisance there and almost felt like had to yell to communicate. i live in Birmingham and this used to be one of my favorite top four restaurants but their arrogance and increase in prices has outdone my opinion and will not be going back any time soon. I thought it was a neighborhood gem but not any more."

  • "Authentic Southern menu, inventive but not pretentious. A good spot to share with out of town guests who are curious about Southern food. While the menu is limited for Brunch, it is a fair offering for most every palate."

  • "Had a wonderful time and meal at Dyrons for our anniversary. The food, always good at Dyrons, was exceptional as well as our server, Evan. Knew when to pop over and check on us and seemed like he almost read our minds. People at the table had a variety of menus items from the oysters to appetizers from fish to steak. Then the desserts rolled in…oh my! We look forward to our next visit even though its a 1 1/2 hour drive for us."

  • "Good food and service in a relaxed atmosphere. I would say that it has a local clientele as many people seemed to know each other."
    Dined on 3/20/2014
  • "The food was absolutly amazing. So fresh. I got the flounder with grits and my husband got the shirmp and grits. Both stand out dishes! The dessert was wonderful - both the dishes we ordered were fresh and warm when they got to the table. Now for the service... our server seemed irritated with us, and didn't explain anything on the menu. After taking our orders, we never saw her again and only got a drink refill when we flagged someone down. My husband had a beer and I had one glass of wine. We would have ordered another but never got the chance. She threw down the check and never said thank you or have a nice night. I loved the food, but not sure we will be back again due to the service."

  • "This review is for dinner service. [Often have Sunday lunch at Dyron's and have never been disappointed: Food & service, outstanding.] We celebrated a birthday with dinner there on a week night. Our guests were new to Dyron's. We wanted a special evening & it was but not because of the restaurant. The food ranged from very good to "won't order that again." Was crowded & noisy. The wait staff stretched thin. Our server seemed pre-occupied. Food arrived quickly. However, birthday cake arrived without requested coffee & wait became awkward. Duck dish was recommended & two of our party ordered that: Was tough, chewy & the side dish unappealing. The flounder & chicken were reported to be 'good'. Biscuits were best thing on the table."

  • "The restaurant strives for a relaxed attitude and attains it. The seating was impersonal but the wait staff was extremely attentive and helpful. The baked oysters were flavorful and very nicely presented. The snapper was also done very well and tasted as fresh as they suggested it would. They pride themselves in the quality of their fish and their attention to the South Carolina Coast. Their pitch toward authenticity adds to the quality of the meal and the experience."

  • "Dyron's was described in the reviews I read before going as locally sourced, creative Southern cuisine. I did not read in any reviews that indicated how rich and heavy it was. So that's what my focus is. I'm from CA and not used to butter and cream in everything. The fish was breaded and had a buerre blanc sauce so the taste of the fish was lost. The grits were packed with cream or butter or cheese, or all three. The taste was good, but too rich for me. The waitress was accommodating when I asked if I could substitute the salad that comes with the dinner with brussel sprouts."

  • "Tried this restaurant for a Valentines celebration. The food and service were great. However we were seated near the entrance and each time the door opened, a gust of cold air hit us. Wife wore heavy wrap for the entire meal. Initially, the noise level was not conducive to conversation, but as the bar emptied, the ambience became more charming. Will try again because the food and service were good and a good effort is made to locally source food."
