Diner Reviews
  • "We are from Chicago and have an abundance or great steak restaurants and Durant's was a wonderful experience for us. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone especially for special occasions. "

  • "Extremely overpriced for what you get. Food was mediocre. Chicken podcast wasn't bad but the garlic mashed potatoes were inedible by all four of us diners. I will not return. Later found out from coworkers that this restaurant is indeed not what it use to be. Quality has gone down while prices went up. Too many other great choices out there."

  • "This restaurant is truly like stepping back in time. With the red velvet wallpaper and plush leather booths the feel was dated. The food was okay but nothing special. However, that being said, the locals seem to view it as a special occasion place as there were 3 prom dates with beautiful formals and the young men in their tuxes and at the next table over a birthday was being celebrated. We happened to be there on a night when the locals were "cruising on Central" which happens on Saturdays about every 3 months. People lined the street to look at the cars slowly go up and down the street and "burn rubber". It took us 30 minutes to go 4 blocks so beware if you choose one of these Saturdays and don't want to be late."

  • "Fantastic, class food options with exceptional service, quality meat and ingredients. Truly a Phoenix landmark and the service makes you feel like royalty. I have had only the finest food each time I've dined with Durant's. I highly recommend Durant's Restaurant!"

  • "Had a wonderful meal . The waiter was very nice and made good suggestions. A very special dining experience."

  • "The ambience and feel were awesome. You could just imagine that you went back in time. I have to imagine and hope the steaks are normally better than what we were served. Three of four were really not very good."

  • "Durant's takes one back in time to where food, service, and atmosphere all combined to provide an enjoyable dining experience. Unrushed and relaxing, our server provided us with a marvelous lunch getaway. Never was the conversation interrupted with the oh so typical "Is everything alright" inquiry. Food was perfect in size, flavor, freshness and price. Durant's is without a doubt an experience for those who think chain restarants or the lastest trendy spots are the place to have lunch, dinner, or other gastro event. Durant's has seen many come and go, and I predict will be around long after others have shuttered their doors."

  • "Everything was wonderful. steaks delivered as requested, intense flavor. All sides were excellent, "birthday dessert' was unexpected. Wine list a bit pricey!"

  • "Durant's was recommended by our golf buddies as one fine restaurant and steakhouse. We tried it and were very satisfied. The bar drinks were the best we have had. The entire entre was just as recommended. We will recommend and return for another enjoyable meal."

  • "Best restaurant experience I've ever had in Phoenix. Everything we ate was delicious. My rib eye by far the best in Phoenix and my wife had a crab cake and sea scallops that were cooked to perfection. Excellent wine list and scotch list."

  • "Had a party of 8 and we had a variety of appetizers and main courses. Most notable were the oysters rockefeller, chicken livers for appetizers and the ribeye, prime rib and salmon. Steaks were awesome, well seasoned, very flavorfull and perfectly cooked."

  • "Had a great time as usual. I've been patronizing this fine establishment for over 40 years and have NEVER had a negative experience."

  • "Like stepping back in time to the good ol' days, Durant's is a steakhouse experience. It's fancy in a bygone era kind of way and neat to look at all the historical pictures on the wall. The place was bustling on the Saturday evening we were there. Our server was very nice and attentive. Wine list had a lot of nice gems but still decently-priced wines by the glass. We had prime rib and a rib-eye. Both were cooked exactly as ordered, and the seasoning on the steak was outstanding. One of the best pieces of meat I've had in quite a while. The garlic mashed potatoes were sinfully good. We finished off with the apple-blueberry cobbler a la mode, which we probably shouldn't have eaten, since we were so stuffed, but it was delicious."

  • "Great food , - rib eye steak was cooked to order and better than the chains. Veggies were (asparagus, cauliflower, potatoes) were done to perfection. Service was extra courteous and generally prompt. Wine list was modest in selection and price (for pinot noir anyway) Only con was seating. Small table for two in a corner that was too close to other tables on either side - difficult to get in and out without disturbing other patrons. First time patron - will definitely go back and recommend to my friends."

  • "Still a classic in downtown Phoenix. My friend had prime rib which was perfect . I had crab cakes-to die for. Soup or salad come with and salad great with Some of the best Roquefort dressing I have ever had. I still love coming through the kitchen And service really good Will return!"

  • "Restaurant was accommodating for our party of 8. They prepared a table that was conducive for conversation. Food was very good."

  • "Great food. Atmosphere reminds me of "old Hollywood". Waiters and Waitresses not very outgoing. Kinda of stodgy. Mabe that is the intent."

  • "Very simply, Durant's is my favorite restaurant in Phoenix. It never disappoints. We were celebrating my birthday and they made me feel special. They always make sure we have plenty of time to drive to the theater."

  • "We decided to order the steamed clam appetizer, and we were disappointed. The clams were brought out loaded with cheese. Neither the menu nor our server mentioned anything about toppings or additions to this dish. We sent it back asking them to leave off the cheese, and they brought out another helping, only this time it was covered in tomatoes, and some of the clams were missing from their shells. I don't want food doctored up. Most of all, if there are any additional topping items or seasonings, it should clearly state this on the menu. Seemed like we had to wait a long amount of time for our main dish, which was quite pricey for what we got. I thought the place was a bit overpriced for what seemed like fair or mediocre quality."

  • "The food here is AMAZING!!! What a throw back to the good 'ole day's of not counting calories....and why should you when the food is this spectacular. Everyone needs to take a night off their diets and experience Durant's. I am very pleased with my experience, and will be back for more! Thanks to all at Durant's :-)"

  • "The food and service were great, and the ambiance is the best in town. Gail the bartender is a true professional, who makes the best of many classic drinks. The fried shrimp can't be beat. We love it all here."

  • "Durant''s is simply a great restaurant. The food is fabulous. Service is excellent. Is it on the expensive side, sure, but I would rather pay a little more and have a great meal than save a few bucks and have an average meal. Their Roquefort dressing may be the best I have ever had. The bread with the tapenade, another winner . Lets not forget the steaks!!! We went there for my wife's birthday and she commented that it might have been the best dinner she has ever had. We live in San Diego and used to live in LA and have been in some of the finest restaurants they have to offer and Durant's ranks right up there. Don't forget to park in the back and enter through the kitchen. Its part of the charm of Durant's."

  • "Durant's is the iconic supper club of the 1950's. Small (reservations a necessity), decorated in red flock wallpaper and with a mixture of booths and tables, it reflects a period when steak and bourbon ruled. The menu also offers exceptionally good seafood, poultry and pasta dishes (the food is superior in all aspects) and my trout was superb. This is not, however, a discount diner. You will pay $70 per person with one adult beverage (excluding tax and tip), and expect slower service on Fridays and Saturdays when events are held downtown. The staff is polite but unwilling to accommodate guest requests that require any preparation, so if you have a special need call ahead and see if they will do it! A destination restaurant. Enjoy!"

  • "Since we didn't order steak, I can't say whether their steaks are good, but their prices are certainly shocking: $90 steaks; $40 for shrimp scampi or chicken marsala--and a very pricy wine list. We ordered clams fettucine (mediocre) and calf's liver (very good), both about $25. Dinner comes with soup or salad."

  • "I think Eddie's House is one of the most welcoming restaurants in Scottsdale. I love the "living room" feel of the decor and the relaxed but attentive nature of the service. The food is delicious and shareable. I brought my family and some long time friends here for dinner and we enjoyed the "What's in this Steak" specialty, the meatloaf, and Mo'Rockin shrimp, among other things, including a special "surf and turf" tartare, courtesy of Eddie himself. Was a fantastic night--thanks to all!"

  • "Food was excellent, as usual. We love Durant's and have made it a regular for special occasions and just a good night out. Should have known Spring Training would bring a different crowd and atmosphere. Our food was just as expected but we were terribly rushed..... Our server was harried and dishes were delivered on top of one another... We'll forgive and come back...."

  • "Loved the old world look...loved the menu....loved the bread.....even loved our waiter. Chicken livers were deep fried and dry, dry, dry. Even though they made a mignonette, to order, for my oysters, said mollusks were not worth the trouble, loaded with shell bits, watery and stringy. Our waiter tried his best and sent us some sorbet after dinner. We wanted stone crabs and were told they were out - at 5 PM on a Friday Night. Next time we shall listen to friends and go to Ben and Jacks."

  • "Haven't been to Durant's since I was there with my grandparents as a little girl. I was happy to see it bustling and still true to its roots. We wanted an old school Phoenix experience for our anniversary dinner, and it was great. The service was amazing, and of course they spoiled us for our anniversary with a giant strawberry shortcake on the house."

  • "Our party of four had a great time and a very good meal. The history of this 64-year-old (62?) is visible in the pictures on the walls. Would love a time to come in before it's crowded and look at each picture. Red wallpaper, low lights, very energetic crowd. Our server has worked there 15 years or so. She's probably deaf from all the noise, but she did a good job on a very crowded night. So glad we had reservations. We had the artichoke dip- yummy and full of flavor. The prime rib was substantial and perfectly cooked. Wine kept coming as needed. Tables are very close together; next time I'll ask for a booth. We will definitely return!"

  • "Durant's is always good, service is impeccable, and the food is above par. I am always happy to spend an evening at Durant's where the old style customer service reigns supreme. The decor with fresh flower arrangements, table linens, formally attired staff and big leather booths makes the customer feel special. Even when the restaurant is busy and full, you still feel intimate and secluded in your own space - it is not noisy but cozy. This will remain a favorite forever! LOVE walking in through the kitchen where we can also thank the staff on our way out for the awesome food!"

  • "Durants has great steak in a wonderful retro atmosphere that's real--I assume the red flocked wallpaper has been there for 30 years. It's not pretensious--like some of the chain steakhouses. The only not -excellent food is the vegetables that can be ordered instead of potato with the steak-- New Yorkers should understand that the cheesecake, while good--is not New York style cheesecake--the texture is wrong There's no dress code here either--which might put some people splurging on a big night out off but the food is excellent, and the service attentive--the atmosphere worth the visit"

  • "Went to Durants with my brother and father to celebrate my father's retirement. We had never been to Phoenix before, and were in town to see some Spring Training baseball games. Before our trip, I researched restaurants in the area, and decided on this one. It was the right choice! We each had the rib-eye, and ordered them medium. Most places do not get "medium" right, but Durants nailed it. Each bite was juicy, flavorful, and tender. We each had our favorite cocktails, and Durants did not disappoint. I was very pleased that the shrimp bisque that started off the meal was so tasty without being salty. It was a very nice surprise that I enjoyed the food beyond the steak. Although the tables were a bit crammed together, the ambience was nice"

  • "I have been coming to Durant's on and off since I moved to the Valley of the Sun in 1989, and it really hasn't changed, which is how it should be. Those in the know still enter through the back door and walk through the kitchen, which definitely makes Durant's unique. It seems to me that I heard they had plans to do away with that at one time, but the outcry soon made ownership forget about that idea. The steaks, while definitely not low-priced, were, as always, perfect. I don't believe you can have a bad steak at Durant's, and I think the original owner, Jack Durant, would be happy to hear that. These people know what you come there for (special occasions and romantic evenings for me -- and the best steak in Phoenix) and they deliver."
