Diner Reviews
  • "We have dined at Dunaway's in the past and been impressed. Recently we hosted a business dinner with Chinese guest and a representative of an Indiana Commission. We were sadly disappointed . The food was ok, but there was no bread available, one guest ordered iced tea. He was served a sweetened tea and told it was the only available. The tea was served in a glass with a Pepsi logo (strange for an upscale restaurant.) The hot water for another guest's tea serving was not hot enough. Maybe a personal opinion, but you don't mess with creme brulee. It should be what it is...a simple tasty dessert. We may try again. But we cannot now recommend Dunaway's for any special occasion."

  • "Dinner was a delight. Our waiter, Chad, was really great. He gave us a couple ideas for something to do after dinner too! I got two compliments on my dress while we were at dinner. Our whole experience at Dunaways was a very special treat. We do not get to go out as much as we would like since the birth of our son, but this night was a real gem!"

  • "In attending the Men's Big 10 Basketball Tournament, we always visit Dunaway's for a delicious dinner. This year was no different, there were four in our group and we all greatly enjoyed our dinners."

  • "We read the reviews before making a reservation here and was questioning our decision going. However, by the end of our dinner, we were ready to make another reservation. We were sat beside the fireplace where there were other people in the room as well including a large group and it was still quiet and comfortable. The food was great! The portion sizes were a little large, but the quality was second to none. Cassie, our sever was friendly and helpful, she was always around when we needed her. In conclusion, the overall experience was above average."

  • "A bit disappointed. Asked about the fish of the day. Server had to go and ask. Sounded good, so I ordered it. After appetizers and salad, she returns and says they're out if the special. It was Saturday at 6:00. Ordered something else, which was OK but did not arrive with the described sides, but the server didn't seem to be aware. She said she was a bartender, but clearly had no idea how to properly serve a bottle of wine. Overall, a $200 dinner that was unimpressive."

  • "Lemon drop martin was amazing, as was the wedge salad , focacia bread and ny strip. The only thing i would not recommend was the choc chip creme brule. It was lacking flavor."

  • "They were out of several different items, from alcoholic beverages to catch of the day. The place was nearly empty at 7pm. The food was pricey, but not worth the price."

  • "I had only visited this restaurant once before, approximately 4 years ago. It was a great dining experience then and even better the second time around. The staff was very friendly, engaging and efficient. The appetizers were excellent and the entrees were incredible. While Dunaway's isn't necessarily known just for steaks, everyone in our group felt that the steaks were superior to many of the nearby "famous" steakhouses. The only negative that anyone observed is that fact that some of the steaks (primarily the ribeye) were just too large of a portion. In short, plan on a great visit but, be prepared to deal with a take-home package,"

  • "Hi we were there for the devour Indy event which I assumed would be to showcase your business to gain repeat customers. I was very disappointed in the service and the food. I will not not be recommending you or coming back and I live only a few blocks away."

  • "The menu is limited, but we tried some of everything and it all was excellent. Service was spotty; flurries of attention mixed in with long waits. We were seated in the high-traffic, high-noise bar area. We were curious why we were not seated in the main level dining room, which seemed more serene; we arrived on-time and there were plenty of open tables in the main dining room. The wine list is very thin and significantly overpriced; some wines are available by the glass but those are not listed on a menu anywhere. One bottle (Meiomi Pinot Noir) is $65; this retails for $20. Restaurants always charge more, but more than 3x retail is absurd. Would go back for the food, but only for the dining room and will see if we can BYOB for wine."

  • "This was my first time at Dunaway's and I absolutely loved it. Our service was fantastic. We got there an hour before our reservation and they were able to seat us right away. The food was absolutely amazing. A little expensive but very good. The view of downtown and Lucas Oil Stadium is second to none in downtown Indy. I definitely will be returning."

  • "Dunaways used to be really nice, but it's declined in service quality. The busers were excellent, but our server disappeared quite often. He never asked us if we wanted more drinks or coffee with our dessert. Three people at my table had overcooked meat. When I mentioned that food was simply ok, he didn't asked me why, but instead he told me I hurt his feelings. If I'm going to be paying that much for dinner, I'm going to go to a place that cooks the food correctly and serves it in a timely manner. I used to really love this restaurant. Now I don't plan to ever go back."

  • "Our reservation was for 8pm. It took 20 minutes after we sat down to get a waiter. He was very nice and good, but it should not take 20 minutes for him to come for the first time. 2 of the 4 food orders were wrong and had to be fixed. He couldn't figure out how to cash out our bill on part cash/part card. Luckily, the food was outstanding!"

  • "I dined at Dunaway's during Devour Downtown with two friends - it was the first time there for all of us. We were all pleased with our experience - from our friendly and attentive server, Lawrence, to the fantastic crab cakes and filet. The pistachio chocolate chip creme brulee was definitely a highlight! We're already planning a summer birthday dinner there so we can dine on the rooftop!"

  • "Ate here as part of devour downtown. The wife and I both had the crab cake which was fantastic. She had the chop and I had the veal. Both were of ample size and very tasty. She had salad which was somewhat overwhelmed by the blue cheese crumbles and I had a very tasty cup of vegetable beef soup. The bread and oil were very complimentary to each other and this was kept in supply throughout the meal. The wine list was supposedly "under construction" so the wine steward recommended a very good white zinfandel. Dessert for my wife was a very tasty crème brulee and I had the vanilla Italian ice cream which was excellent. Overall a very good dining experience. The wait staff was friendly and courteous, the chef even made an appearance at the table"

  • "Worst dining experience I have ever had. I will never eat at this establishment again, nor will I recommend it to anyone. In fact, I am currently telling everyone I can to avoid this place. What a waste of a beautiful, historical, building."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "I don't mind paying a bit more for a meal, but I expect the serving to represent the price. I ordered the petite filet, and it was more child than petite. I really could have eaten it in four bites. It was prepared just ok. And the drinks were small and very expensive and light on alcohol. I really prefer my drinks to be light on alcohol, but not if I've paid top price for them as well. Our waiter was very attentive. But with so many places downtown to get a great steak, I won't be returning here. And I thought it would be great, eat downtown and they have their own parking lot so that would be a plus, but they charged seven dollars to park right outside their door. Won't return."

  • "I had not been to Dunaway's for a number of years and was looking forward to it. We were immediately told that a number of the wait staff could not make it to work. Had to get up and walk to the bar/kitchen two times to see if anyone was even coming back. When our desert was attempted to be delivered prior to our entree that was sort of it... No "we are sorry". No let us buy you a coffee. No remorse for the worse service I have had in a restaurant in Indy."

  • "We were participating in devour downtown...Drinks were switched, confused on appetizer whether it was supposed to be cold or hot It was mostly cold but a hint of warm in a bite or two...main course delivers before salads...we had to ask for our bread...drinks were mixed up, and after main course we were asked "is there anything else we can get u"? Um yes our desserts...oh boy...last but not least, we went to get our coats from coat check...tried giving us wrong coat...best part of whole night - the valet service! He rocked it!"

  • "First time there for my girlfriend and I. Have wanted to go for a long time. Had Devour menu. Very shy, quiet server. Had to ask for bread. Waited quite a while for wine. Entrees came before salads. Creme bulet was awful. Expected much, much more than we received. In comparison to other Devour dining experiences, not even on the same map. May have been a bad night for them, but very disappointing."

  • "We arrived for an early dinner. There were few people in the restaurant but we were were seated upstairs which was in need of updating. There was NO winelist--the owner was supposedly redoing the list. I was brought a glass of the only Chardonnay available and it was terrible! Our waiter, Lawrence, was delightful and attentive. The food was ordinary at best. We chose from the Devour Downtown menu which I thought was intended to attract new customers to a restaurant--they missed the mark."

  • "We went for our anniversary celebration. Seating was quick. Service and food was exceptional with prices where you would expect them. Wine is way over priced. I would expect to pay maybe three times the value of a bottle of wine but not six times the value which is what we did in a restaurant. For that, I could not give them five stars."
    Dined on 1/21/2014
  • "Wow. Very disappointed. I pulled into the Dunaways valet parking lot and was charged $7 to park my own car. The waiter simply had no sense of how to serve a group. The food took forever and was not great."

  • "A group of us always get together for New Year's Eve and decided to go to Dunaway's since we haven't been there in a while. We had an excellent table upstairs. The food was good, but not great-considering the price. I asked to change from a Caesar dressing on my salad to a balsamic and was told the chef would not take any changes to any of the menu items. Seriously?! It would be different if the place was crowded, but it wasn't. The crab cake appetizer was the size of a silver dollar and the only dish priced right for what you got was the pork chop. Our server seemed distracted all night and didn't even offer a dessert menu. I think he was told to get us out of there before midnight. Not sure if we will return. Disappointed."

  • "We were left waiting in the lobby while our guests were waiting for us upstairs in the booth. They told us our guests had not yet arrived? They brought the dipping oil but no bread until we asked for it when our entree arrived. The asparagus side never came---until the check came. The upstairs was not busy---center aisle empty."

  • "This restaurant was recommended by a friend and was far better than I expected. The service was amazing, the rooms warm and comfortable, the wine list extensive, and the food amazing. We had a great meeting, and I had one of the best meals that I've had in a very long time. Dunaway's is a must try!"

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in Indy, and I try to make it there whenever I get to the city. The ambience is wonderful, particularly in the Fireplace Room. The historic two-story brick building itself is pretty amazing having been moved to its current location from a previous one. The wine list is outstanding, the menu eclectic, and both the preparation and presentation excellent. The staff is personable and attentive. Dunaway's makes special occasions very special. I simply could not recommend it more highly."

  • "My wife and I went for the evening before the Big 10 championship. It was wonderful, the staff were amazing and the manager was extremely friendly. I was not excited about the Diavlo pasta that was a special but my wife loved her pasta. I talked myself out of the Strip which I have heard is spectacular. If you want to be pampered and treated right as a customer, this is the place to go. I will be back many times because of the class of the staff and the way we were treated."

  • "Was spending one night in Indianapolis and checked my Open Table app -- and was so pleased to find Dunaway's! Everything about the meal was terrific -- great goat cheese salad; generous, perfectly seasoned and prepared strip steak; and yummy pistachio and chocolate chip creme brulee. The staff was super friendly and helpful. No wine list was available, but the sommelier was very knowledgeable and directed me to a wonderful wine. The restaurantt has (at least) two dining spaces -- the paneled room has a fireplace and was very comfortable, and the bar area has a knock-out terrazzo floor. This restaurant is a winner!"

  • "We arrived and waited about 4 minutes to be greeted at the door. The man who greeted us seemed unsure of what to do. Perhaps he was new or this wasn't his job. We were seated and then asked what we wanted to drink, despite not being given a wine menu. I had to ask him to bring us one. Eventually, some other server took over and the service reached my expected level of service. Just the beginning was rocky. Also, we were one of three couples in the restaurant at 7:30 on a Friday. How weird. I'd expected it to be much livelier in there."
