Diner Reviews
  • "We made reservations because we also had an event to attend to and didn't want to be late. When we arrived there were problems with our reservations and we were forced to have our dinner at the barefoot bar, where we waited for a table like a bunch of peasants waiting for the soup kitchen to open. I realize it was busy but it took a lifetime for us to even get our order in and we decided to just close the bill right as we ordered because we were in a hurry. When our food came there were two obvious mistakes and the waitress offered to place another order but at this point we were already going to be late and just wanted to get out. It was a nerve-wrecking experience and the biggest waste of money."

  • "Fantastic views of the ocean, excellent choices for food and a festive atmosphere makes Duke's a great place for lunch with family. Although we waited a bit, even with a reservation, we were seated at a table with an ocean view. The server was very nice although it took him a while to take our order, bring our check, and complete the transaction. If you're not pressed for time, this place takes their "island time" attitude seriously and no one is in a real hurry; although it is very busy. Last thing that I thought was strange was that we were charged for dessert even though we were celebrating a birthday. I'm used to an establishment providing this for free but I understand this as it was a very large piece of dessert."

  • "Great for out-of-town guests. Its truly a unique experience. The beauty of Malibu's coastline mixed with great food and a lively atmosphere is perfect for entertaining."

  • "The hubs and I were able to snag a window seat off the main dining room and watch the sunset as we enjoyed our amazing dinner. Such a great place to take your time, have great conversation, good wine and amazing food. My steak was so tender! We loved the coconut shrimp too!"

  • "Nice vegetarian dish (wish there was more than one vegetarian entree!) Amazing sea food assortment for my date. Nice waiter. Slow service in the beginning due to being a little short staffed with a large party, but after the longer than avg. wait for service all was well. We asked for a table by the window and one was reserved for us."

  • "Very good restaurant that doesn't overcook the fish, beautiful view of the ocean, there are hardly any bad seats in this place. Had a hard time getting a table along the window despite making reservations, but that may have also been my bad timing. Better check time for sunset next time."

  • "A small party of 3 came to celebrate a birthday. We had a reservation through Open Table and although, we requested a window seat, we were asked if we wouldn't mind sitting in a raised booth. No problem because we loved it! More privacy than a window seat and the view was just as wonderful. The service is excellent and the food as well. We are not foodies by any means but we each loved our meals... shrimp cocktail, seafood chower, coconut schrimp, steak, and more...and then, to top it off, they gave us their special Happy Birthday dessert as a surprise - it made our night! It's not a fancy place; you can be totally casual which was fine with us. This is a great find although we know it's been there forever!"

  • "Food here is usually great & reasonable but this past weekend, we went for lunch on Sunday and the only option was their brunch. We had out of town guests and wanted them to experience the wonderful food. Unfortunately, they were treated to 50 kinds of eggs and a couple other non-egg items for $27. What a rip off. I was so disappointed. I've been here several times and was really looking forward to it. I'll probably go back, just not on a Sunday afternoon."

  • "Great food and service. Duke's offers a variety of exotic fish you won't find at other sea food restaurants and all tables have a view of the ocean. Outstanding dining experience."

  • "If you like fresh fish and seafood dishes with scenic view than go to Duke's! On weekends it's very crowded and loud and you need to make a reservation. Unfortunately they do not confirm reservations when you ask for beach front tables - too bad when you plan a romantic dinner at sunset :(. Overall fantastic food!"

  • "After going back and forth about where to go for a bachelorette party...we decided on Dukes. And let me tell you...BEST DECISION EVER! This place was perfect! Our server was fantastic, she even made sure there was an entourage of men out to bring out our food...like one server per person to bring out our entrees! It was amazing! The food was fantastic and the prices...we were blown away! We had a bunch of appetizers, two rounds of drinks and entrees, for 7 people and it was about $300!!! IN MALIBU ON THE WATER! The service...WOW the service! Like I mentioned before our waitress was amazing! She heard it was a bachelorette and was having a ball with us. We even made her take a picture with us before we left...it was FANTASTIC!"

  • "Beautiful views of the ocean. Great spot to take out of town guests to who don't want to get in the water! Food is good. Not too over priced as compared to other spots in Malibu."

  • "We arrived early and went to the bar. The bartender made note of our arrival and upon seeing our daughter's license, wished her happy birthday (saw her later and wished it again!). Unfortunately, our waiter was not as in tune and didn't ask if we were there to 'celebrate anything special tonight?' We watched as people seated after us were served before us, had enthusiastic exchanges with their waiter and then left before us. After we finished dinner, he asked if there would be anything else. I answered, I don't know ~ what's on the dessert menu? Really? I had to ASK for a dessert menu? Valet ~ great! Hostesses ~ great! Bartender ~ awesome! Waiter ~ thanks anyway."

  • "An "easy going" restaurant with reasonably priced menu and a beautiful ocean view. I couldn't asked for more. It was my boyfriend's first time and he/we had an enjoyable experience. Our waiter Jake was great; we had a good time being served by him."

  • "The service was terrible, our server didn't even come up to ask us how our food was once we got it, she seemed like she wanted to flip her table. Three of us ordered burgers which were all over cooked."

  • "We celebrated our son and daughter-in-law's first anniversary at Duke's. The service is friendly and thorough, definitely not rushed. Everyone responds courteously and promptly to requests. Because we live far away, and because the a la carte ordering gets a bit pricey, we keep Duke's for special occasions. The wine list was not extensive but I was pleased to find winemakers represented that are not the available-in-all-supermarkets type. Three of us ordered a fish entree, one a steak, all prepared with a fresh taste, including the side dishes. Because we said (when asked by our server) that we were celebrating the anniversary, a complimentary serving of Hula Pie to share was delivered to our table. All delicious and appreciated."

  • "My husband and I went for an early evening dinner. The timimg was perfect to catch the sunset view. Service, food and atmosphere were perfect for a quiet intimate experience. We even caught a glimpse of a seal peaking through the waves."

  • "We went to Sunday Buffet Brunch as a treat for my wife's birthday. As a buffet brunch, the food was what you'd expect, but the taste, quality and freshness was outstanding. It seemed as if they turned the food over on a regular basis, rather than let it sit in the warmers. Thus, everything was hot, and very fresh-looking, and tasting. We had a 11:45 reservation for a window table, and we were seated by 11:50, beautiful view, and not crammed in. Highly recommended for this type of event. BTW, when we left at about 1:50, with the buffet closing in 10 minutes, there were lots of people waiting, so I assume the lunch menu must be excellent as well."

  • "A coworker of mine told me about Dukes in Malibu and I finally had an opportunity to go with some friends from out of the country and it was unbelievable! The service was spectacular, the food was incredible - no dish was anything but rave worthy, and the view was priceless. I can't wait to take everyone I know there in the future!"

  • "We have celebrated special occasions many times at Dukes and they have never let us down. Thanks Dukes for making our 45th anniversary party a memorable event! Our guest all traveled over 50 miles to attend and were not disappointed."

  • "Definitely worth going once, or even once in a while. The view is amazing, especially at sunset while we were there. We enjoyed everything but the bill, which caught us a bit by surprise. Next time we may try the Barefoot Bar instead, which seems to be more casual (=less expensive?) although I'm not sure if it will be as nice an experience. For a romantic meal, definitely try to get a window table in the main dining room."

  • "We had a really great time at Duke's celebrating my mom's birthday! Decided to try the Sunday brunch this time around and it was very good. Tons of options. Our waiter was incredible and brought my mom out a nice (huge) piece of ice cream cake with a candle in it for her special day. Fantastic surprise! We also ordered a bottle of champagne for mimosas. $16 and it was actually good for the price! I have also been there for lunch at other times and it has always been a fave for seafood and clam chowder. If you've never been to Duke's, you're missing out. It's casual, comfortable, and the ocean view will not disappoint. If you want to drive up the coast from L.A., it's a great place to stop and dine. Would definitely recommend."

  • "The staff went out of their way to fulfill our special request. The breakfast buffet was delicious. Note, however, that on Sunday, there is no lunch menu available if you've made reservations for the restaurant - just brunch. Lunch menu is available on patio or bar. PS: Gidget, their special "ambassador" was lovely and so helpful!"

  • "Multiple generations make for a challenge when choosing a restaurant. The birthday luncheon was for our 23 year old nephew. He, and those in his age group LOVED the food and drinks. I loved the atmosphere and excellent attention from our waiter... He was fun and candid. The front 'greeters' gave us a window seat by explaining we would need to wait for just a moment; and it was just a moment, not fifteen minutes. I loved my Dukes hamburger with blue cheese. The only request I would make is an option of fresh cut fruit in place of fries. Oh!!! We also had avocado slice on top and it was ripe, not hard... ahhhh... I was pleased."
