Diner Reviews
  • "This is a lovely restaurant with beautiful food, although the menu selections were a bit sparse. More vegetable offerings would have been greatly appreciated. Also, not the restaurant's fault, but most of our romantic dinner was spoiled by an obnoxiously loud family next to us."

  • "This was by bar the best dining experience I've ever had. I could not recommend The Grill anymore!"

  • "We ordered the pre fixe dinner. Excellent. Fresh, locally sourced when possible, excellent preparation."

  • "Le Millénaire restaurant in Reims (one Michelin star) is my favorite destination when in France. Austin's Driskill Grill rivals it, where dish variety and service quality are concerned. The Driskill offers a rich wine list and their wait-staff understand food-wine pairings like nobody's business. Unpretentious, high-end dining experience at a very reasonable price -- Great value!"

  • "I had my best friend and my sister in town on the same weekend; this was the perfect location. The service was great, the food was perfect (as were the cocktails). I'm pretty sure our waiter can read minds too. I will definitely do that again."

  • "The Driskill was fabulous, great ambiance, very busy but the servers were always attentive. Food was exquisite, and there was a great variety. I will be returning."

  • "Service was horrendous and the food was just ok. I would not go back or recommend."

  • "The Driskill Grill is a very special place. It is almost a "destination" dining experience; that is, one spends the entire evening surrounded with helpful, but not intrusive, service and very special and delicious food. Our dining group of four was consistently pleased with the evening--from our arrival through the five courses of the chef's special (and each was indeed special and well presented and explained by the servers) to our departure with warm words from the staff."

  • "Very good food and service with nice atmosphere in downtown Austin. A little pricey."

  • "The food was amazing. The bill was amazingly high."

  • "The quality of food, service, ambience all excellent. Disappointed that we were dining almos talone in the room at 8PM (when the food was served). Wednesday 7:30 reservation. Would prefer to come at some time when the room had more diners. In fact, won't come again without checking to see if the house was likely to be at least half full."

  • "I've eaten several high dollar meals and this one is not worth it. I think that the Driskill could use some updates in ambiance and food. It was not bad at all and mostly cooked well. Presentation was typical, nothing new. We did the 7 course tasting menu. I didn't go the Driskill expecting anything modern but did go expecting to overwhelm my tastebuds and that did not happen. There was a lack of seasoning overall and I felt the food was what I would have expected to eat about 5-7 years ago. I didn't taste anything that stood out or that would make me want to come back and experience it again. I think to spend this much it needs to be amazing and I would not come close to using that word to describe what we ate."

  • "Went here For 2nd anniversary. Went last year and service and food was so fantastic we decided to make it a yearly tradition! They always make the occasion special by writing on our desert plates, this time the manager gave us a fresh tin of cookies from their bakery."

  • "The filet mignon is to die for - grilled to buttery, melt in your mouth perfection - it is probably the best steak moment in a lifetime of fine dinning. The venison tartare starter was a delight with contrasting flavors and textures. Service was impeccable and the room has a distinctive historical look and feel as befits the landmark Driskill Hotel. Don't miss this experience!"

  • "We enjoyed our Valentine's dinner at the Driskill Grill. The multi course meal was great and so was the service. A special touch was that we ordered additional cocktails at the bar on our way out and had them outdoors on a mezzanine balcony."

  • "Great ambiance, attentive but not intrusive service, wonderful food-altogether a terrific dining experience. The menu changes daily with only four main dishes, so it pays to check the daily menu before making a reservation (which is required)."

  • "My wife and I visited The Driskill Grill to celebrate our 10-year Anniversary and we will forever remember our experience. The staff was delightful, knowledgeable and tactful. While we dined for over 3 hours, our time never dragged, nor were we ever without a beverage and morsel. Both the presentation and taste of each course were excellent along with the carefully paired wine selections. We will certainly revisit The Driskill Grill for future special occasions."

  • "Just married and in a first class hotel. Expected a bit more than sub par service and elitist attitude from our particular waiter. The experience appeared as though it could have been outstanding. The food was a bit mediocre for such a high quality setting. This boutique hotel is gorgeous, but the restaurant staff (1 waiter) need to understand how to treat all patrons as though they are the most important. I do have to be honest though... if it was not for the very poor service that I received from one waiter, this would have been a wonderful experience; but, the food was still not 5 stars."

  • "Exquisite! Although it can be expensive, it is worth every dollar. I found the Victorian, yet hospitable, dining room atmosphere quite comfortable."

  • "While certainly not as trendy as many of the newer Austin restaurants, the Driskill Grill remains a solid choice for dinner. We dined on New Year's Eve when there was a special set (expensive) menu. The wine pairings were excellent and the food good. Entree portions were quite small though and I would have liked having the option of a cheese plate for dessert."

  • "My girlfriend and I went there for her birthday, we were guests at the hotel and would do it again. It was a delicious and wonderful time."
    Dined on 12/20/2013
  • "The Driskill has a 5 course chef menu that was interesting and tasty. The waiter would explain everything on the plate when he served it. We had a bottle of Cabernet for $75 that was very good."

  • "It is an expensive meal, but every bite makes you forget about every dollar you are spending. Enjoy the best steak you've ever had."
    Dined on 12/28/2013
  • "Expensive restaurant where the food and service do not live up to the price. Cost with wine was almost $100 per person. Food was more like a $50 per person experience. Wait staff were friendly, but did not offer the elegance or guidance I am accustomed to at expensive venues like this."

  • "Fantastic place for a romantic dinner or special occasion. The food and service are outstanding. It is definitely a place to dress up and dine. Be sure to have a drink at the bar before you are seated. Our meals were wonderful. My wife and I both had seafood for a change (usually we reserve seafood for more coastal cities) and we were not disappointed. While Austin is loaded with more quirky, dress-down, casual, noisy places, the Driskill is a place that for those who want to enjoy a great meal, have super service, and be able to talk to those at the table without shouting. Love the Driskill!"

  • "I celebrated my 40th birthday here and it was fantastic! My husband and I both had the filet, Brussels sprouts and grits--- delish!!! Dessert was also a win! Apple tart and the warm gingerbread both excellent! The only recommendation I have would be for our waiter. He didn't explain anything about the menu. No specials, no nothing. The menu includes an option for multiple courses or you can just order a main entree. We figured it out but it would have been nice to get the info from him. Other than that, the service was great. I will definitely return again for a special occasion!"

  • "From the beginning to the end, the experience is unmatched by any quality restaurant. Food and service were superb."

  • "The whole experience was good. Service was good. We had a work holiday dinner and wanted something festive. The food was overpriced. The filet was small and cut in half when served at your table. For $45 it was not worth it. The pork chop was very good but again not worth $45. If I am paying $45 for a meal it had better be delicious and worth it, this was not. I haven't been to some of the other steakhouses in town but I'd probably try them over The Driskill. The bar area afterwards was great, very festive. Not worth the price tag, save your money or spend it somewhere else."

  • "Came here for our first wedding anniversary & the food was delicious! Only thing is, no complimentary anything received for our special occasion, which was okay, but less than expected."

  • "We haven't been there since David Bull left. But...it was amazing as usual. Thanks for a wonderful evening before Aaron Neville at the Paramount!"

  • "I had high expectations based on web reviews, but my personal experience fell far short. Service was minimal, food was barely "OK", the pace was extremely slow, the cost was extremely high. These elements did not balance. I would not recommend, nor do I plan to return."

  • "The menu selection was very minimal. It was very quiet. Waiters were very attentive."

  • "Had a perfectly lovely time as we celebrated our Wedding Anniversary. The food was very good, the service attentive but not obtrusive. We had a very nice evening. The young woman who assisted at our table was especially gracious and helpful. The only slight negative was that things were a bit slow, but since we were not concerned with the time it did not have an impact."

  • "My first experience with "fine-dining" and it was spectacular. The five-course tasting selection was superb and did not disappoint. Service was top-notch and the atmosphere romantic. A must-visit for natives and visitors to Austin."

  • "The Axis deer was fantastic, and they did a great job of helping us enjoy our anniversary. Wine list is very good, and prices are quite reasonable."

  • "Old west luxury enveloped us as we moved from the bar to the dinning room. The gracious staff helped us feel comfortable throughout the 2 1/2 hour dinner. They eagerly and easily dealt with one diet restriction and accommodated all of our other needs. The five course Thanksgiving meal was filling and replete with the right holiday flavors. The Kale salad started us off crisply and paved the way to the beet and goat cheese terrine. The rich pork belly, perfectly prepared, came next. I opted for the turkey roulade while my daughter had the black-rimmed, red interior beef tenderloin. Finally the Driskill version of a pumpkin pie escorted us to the end of our dinner. Can't wait to get back to try their regular menu."

  • "Enjoyed a great dinner complimented by excellent service (Joe with an attentive back up ensemble). Took my wife to the Driskill Grill for her 50th Birthday. Could not ask for a better experience. Food (taste, presentation) was 5 star. Our dessert was made extra special by the chef who wrote Happy Birthday with chocolate sauce on the plate. Everyone treated us as if we were the only ones there. Highly Recommended!"

  • "We ate at the Driskill in 2012 and had a 5 star experience. This year, not so great. They offered 4 entrees and then 3 menu opportunities ~ a three course, 5 course and 7 course dining experience. We were so tapped out on "big food" we opted for one of the entrees. Good but not great. There wasn't anyone there and we had mediocre service."

  • "It is now just a Hyatt dining room - very sad to re-visit the Driskill Grill and find both Nathan and Brin (sp?) gone with the new ownership. The food was mediocre , with very slow service initially, followed by the 5 course tasting menu coming out so quickly we could not keep up. There was no atmosphere, and we noticed several people leave. We came back later as we'd been told it was ok to hail a taxi from there and were rudely asked for room keys, which we didn't have as /only ate at the restaurant. We were then informed rudely by the doorman that we would not be able to wait there for a taxi. The face of the Driskill has changed beyond all recognition."

  • "While the food was quite good and well above average, the service and atmosphere are simply not up to the task of this level of food. The service was well intended, but unprofessional---far too chatty, loud, and "involved" in our meal. Thankfully, we did not order the set menus, as those entailed a level of "narration" that would have been horrendous---it was bad enough listening to the "spiel" that others received. As for atmosphere, there is quite simply none. It's completely outdated and needs a complete facelift. Definitely not worth the price and not someplace to go for a romantic occasion."
