  • "The chef takes normal Canadian fare and steps it up with creative twists. They are growing their own vegetables and harvesting their own honey out back."

  • "Missing New York for it's cuisine while in Calgary for 5 weeks, a friend told me to check out DTF. Forget not being disappointed, it was one of the best meals I've ever had, and given the quality and detail of the food, very very reasonable. It was so good, I went back 3 times, each time with different people, all of whom had the exact same response. We had the tasting menu on the last evening where you were sad that each course had to end. I can't say enough good things here to convey the complexity of the flavors and the inspired tastes."

  • "Great care taken, excellent execution, pretty plating, imaginative flavour combos that synergized on the plate. Friendly staff. Nice room with beautiful (on theme) artwork. Loved the music choices - nothing ho hum or fuddy duddy. Well done Chef! Cheers to you, Karen Anderson"

  • "The staff is great and well versed on the menu so finding a gluten free option was easy. I had the burger (no bun) with a salad, i wish they would have supplied something a little extra considering i couldn't eat the bun (not filling), but overall it was delicious!! The burger itself was phenominal!"

  • "The food and presentation at this trendy restaurant is excellent and the relaxed service is a refreshing change to the hustle of the average lunch restaurant."

  • "We dined here with friends. We were able to visit over wine befote enjoyinga delicious dinner. The wine list is fairly small, but has some very good ones t moderate prices. Two of us had the wild boar chop, one had duck breast and one ravioli. Everyone loved their food. We all shared the key lime dessert & declared iy a winner. My only criticism was that I thought there was a lack of salad choices. Would return here."

  • "The food was amazing. Particularly loved the mushroom ravioli and foie gras pate. It was so good, I was tempted to lick the plate clean! Excellent service, wine pairing and overall very satisfied. All meals were amazing. Blend of flavours was excellent. My compliments to the chef!"

  • "I enjoyed the duck dish which was surprisingly delicious! They freeze the skin and serve it medium rare. All hand made and grow many of their own greens."

  • "The food was excellent - very creative combinations of flavours that all worked well together. Nice wine list - including good wines that weren't too expensive. The restaurant was relatively small and decorated in a modern style - we liked the photographs of scenes from downtown Calgary on the walls. It was a good place for an anniversary dinner - quiet enough to have a conversation, nice ambience and food for the occasion without being too stuffy. Good service. We will return - and recommend this restaurant to others. Nicely done all round."

  • "Yet another amazing night at downtownfood. If it was up to me, I'd be back here every time they came out with a new tasting menu, because they really are absolutely spectacular food stories. Darren is a genius."

  • "I had dinner with a couple of friends awhile ago just to check the restaurant out. We decided to go with the tasting menu with several bottles of wine. The exceptional part of the menu was a beautiful LITTLE eggplant dish however beyond that everything else hit the 'good' spot but nothing more: very small portions that all seemed just a bit pretentious. The service was very good and the place itself was nice enough. However, for three people and a bill of ~$550.00 with only two bottles of wine I expect 'exceptional' across the board; I can't see going back any time soon."

  • "Three of us went for lunch, and had heard mixed reviews, but wanted to try it for ourselves. We ordered the pork gyoza to start and they came out burnt on one side. No mention of it from the server when some of the bottoms were left on our plates either. We ordered our mains - two burgers and a banh mi sandwich, and the server explained that the burger was freshly ground steak and it's typically cooked to mid rare, and asked the first girl how she took her steak (she said mid-rare). The second girl didn't get asked (and she wanted it medium), and the server never told us what came on the side (if anything). The fries were overcooked (they were seriously hard), we had to dig through them to find the bigger ones, etc. All in all terrible"

  • "The wait staff at DTF were extremely good. I haven't been to a restaurant with staff that are as engaged about where the ingredients come from and what is in every dish. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a local, mostly organic and most importantly delicious dining experience."

  • "Several unique entrees are always on the menu. Excellent preparation and presntation of the meal during this visit for lunch. The soup was great, as usual, and my trout was super. Portions are not large which is fine for lunch. The others at our lunch had no complaints and also commented on the above average lunch experience."

  • "I took my wife for dinner and a show her 30th birthday. Our server, Megan, was very aware of our time constraints and helped us with ordering, drinks and dessert. The food was incredible!! I recommend the duck breast and the dtf ceviche. Both were well constructed, perfectly plated and were full of flavour. My wife enjoyed the atmosphere, food and conversation with our server who was incredibly personable and attentive. All in all a wonderful experience!"

  • "Not a lot of options for veggies... Very appealing if they did offer it as the food is fresh and very interesting! Could be better if they had at least 1-2 veggie options.. "

  • "downtownfood offers something that is sadly far too rare in the Calgary food scene - a truly exceptional and creative culinary experience. The food was exciting and beautiful and the tasting menu with wine pairings was absolutely perfect and well-worth the money (though a sake was really needed for the tataki, chardonnay didn't quite work). The service was wonderfully friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. My only quibble, if I had to have one, was that the dessert didn't quite hit the spot as a decadent end to the meal - it was a bit too fussy, not quite indulgent and satisfying enough."

  • "Loved this restaurant. I had been there for an after-Film Festival party and was happy to go back with a foodie-friend. Her kale salad was delicious. My burger was even more delightful when the root beer shake was served with it! Service was great and I'll happily return."

  • "I had the calamari and the kale salad and both were fantastic. My colleagues had the Korean steak and the trout and everyone was raving about their food. Our server was a true professional! Attentive and charming without being intrusive. This was a great restaurant for business meetings as the sound was not overbearing. I will definitely return to this neighborhood gem. "

  • "You can tell that there exists a passion for doing things well beyond the norm. I have been to DTF six times and find the food and service quite remarkable. The house made everything is exceptional, this is a labour of love for which I can not say enough about. If you have not been, go soon you are missing out on a comprehensive philosophy of food, and why we love to go back again and again."

  • "Not enough menu selections. Smaller portions which is not a bad thing but I was not satisfied with the selections that day. I am certain that my friends felt the same way. I do know that the person that ordered the sashimi Loved it!"

  • "A must do dining experience in Calgary. The flavours of Asian meets West is truly unique and creative. Every fine detail of the dishes was well thought out. A group of 3 shared the fresh rolls, maki roll, and pear bacon salad. We each then had mains of wild boar, halibut, and scallops with pork belly. Portions were perfect to leave us with room to share the banana chocolate ganache dessert. Loved it all!"

  • "The burger, for $20, was way overpriced, regardless of the beef they used. It was not hot when it arrived and neither was the plate. The soup was very good, served in a hot bowl. Lunch for two people, soft drinks only, two entrees and two soups, $90 with tip. Too much."

  • "I took my husband to downtown food on a Monday night, and it was their "Asian Market" which is essentially a variety of unique Asian fusion plates all priced at $10. For $10 I was thinking that the plates were going to be very small, but they were so reasonable and DELICIOUS. They also have oysters for a buck a shuck - which, c'mon, doesn't get any better. They also have delicious cocktails and a great beer & wine list. The service was exceptional and we will certainly be back. The meal was finished with the best mini-fortune cookie (almost like a thin folded shortbread cookie) and our server brought us 2 shots of complimentary saki, just for fun. A total gem of Stephen Ave, without the usual $$$$$. Refreshing."

  • "Friends recommended Downtown food. We choose the chef's menu. Every dish was superb. The first four; ceviche, a fresh cool green pea soup, Sichewan eggplant, wagu tataki, were all small courses; each with a beautiful presentation and distinct flavours that left you craving more. Often I have a problem when a series of items are placed on a plate but not integrated together, I need not worry at Downtown food. The large fifth course was a thai green curry with a generous portion of halibut placed on top. It was a satisfying course. The vegetables throughout the meal were cooked to perfection, the green pea fresh and firm, the eggplant creamy with a baked skin, the okra and water chestnut just right. Dessert was tequillime pie, and macaroon GO"

  • "First time trying this newer restaurant downtown. Very quick and attentive service over lunch, very accommodating to special requests. The Food was very good and had a really nice selection that was a little different than you find anywhere else. We didn't get the best table in the restaurant (even though we booked weeks ago - ended up the very middle of the restaurant between two tables of 4) - so I suggest asking for window or wall table when booking.
