The service was terrible. It took ages to get a drink and order our food. The mains we ordered left much to be desired. They were lacking in taste. I wouldn't recommend this place. The price of the food does is not reflected in the quality of the dishes prepared.

I was there for my Birthday and I was excited to try the Chef's Tasting with the wine pairing. My husband and I eat out quite a bit in Calgary and we wanted to try something new. The food, what there was of it, was delicious. There just wasn't enough. The portion sizes were TINY. Six courses, and over $400 later, my husband went home and ate a can of soup because he was still hungry. I asked the waitress how the portion sizes of the regular entrees compared, and she said they are at least 2 - 3 times as big. Which makes no sense at all. We paid twice the price, for half the food. I can't possibly recommend the Chef's Tasting to anyone. I left feeling ripped off and it overshadowed my entire dining experience.

The vibe inside is high end Calgary but very relaxed and fun. The food is by far the best that I have ever eaten. Nothing else compares when it comes to local, high quality, delicious food. I had to forcefully put my knife and fork down to stop myself from eating too quickly.

I've been to downtown food a couple of times and, while the menu selection is limited, there should be something for everyone on the menu. My main disappointment with the restaurant is the decor: it just doesn't match the food or have any strong personality. So, while I go for the food, I find the ambiance lacking.

Our lunch booking was late in the day for a weekday, so the restaurant was quiet and spacious. Normally I love a small and concise menu; it showcases confidence in their food and abilities... but in this particular case I felt that the menu was too small. For a low carb lunch I didn't feel that there were enough options -even just to add a side. Normally I don't look for 'healthy, low carb' lunches, but on this particular day I was. The salad I chose was good, but a little bit too random with its ingredients to be a memorable experience. In hindsight, looking at what everyone else was eating I wish I had scrapped my salad idea and gone for the burger! I will definitely go back during dinner service to get a more extensive experience.

I invited my wife to meet me at downtownfood at 5:30 on a Tuesday so it was quiet there. I wasn't familiar with downtownfood and chose it based on OpenTable ratings, location, and a desire to try some place new. I didn't have high expectations. The decor is modern and very beautiful. We had excellent service from Judith - pleasant, efficient, and very attentive without being overbearing. But the best part (of course) was the food. We started by sharing a steak tartar appetizer which we agreed was the best tartar we have ever had and an excellent antidote the mediocre tartar we had in Paris in June. My wife had the duck confit while I had the special of the day - beef ravioli. Both were truly outstanding. We will be back very soon.

I've been at the restaurant several times for lunch now. The menu is small, which typically means the choices are all good and a tasty feast. In this case, the menu is a little light on the lunch time size especially on the salads side. I have tried several courses here now and would rate them as average. It's easy to see the effort that is put into the dishes but unfortunately the result is just 'subpar'. Perhaps more attention on the quality of food and a little less on the 'fancy' would be in order.

Four of us had a terrific meal at DTF recently. The tomato salad and maki appetizers were true standouts. Wonderful to look at, terrific to eat, and both quite large. Entre's followed suit, with the boar chop being a favourite at our table, but the catch of the day - scallops - and the duck duo didn't disappoint either. Combine beautiful and delicious food with excellent, friendly and knowledgable service, and a handsome room, and you have a restaurant that is a keeper on the Calgary scene. Highly recommended. I'll be back.

We had a reservation for 12:15. We arrived at 12:05. We were told there was no table available. We waited 35 minutes past our "reservation" time for our "reserved" table. The hostess informed us that if we were there at 12 there still wouldn't have been a table. Why were we able to reserve a table that was not there? We were comped lunch but lost 45 minutes of our lives waiting.

I wanted to take my 9-year-old daughter out to dinner and chose downtownfood because it looked as if it would both cater to her budding foodie inclinations and welcome a younger diner. We really lucked out on both counts. The food was innovative, delicious and beautifully presented and we were warmly welcomed and cared for during our meal. My daughter gave our meal at downtownfood "11 out of 10". She particularly loved the tempura battered maki and that she was offered extra cherries in her Shirley Temple as a matter of course, her "secret wish granted". She was too full for dessert (the portions were large) but excitedly took a salted caramel-chocolate tart home to share with her sisters. We will be back!

Try this restaurant. Impeccable service and absolutely wonderful food. We had the Boxstar tomatoe salad on a bed of pesto with homemade smoked bacon. It was superb. What an interesting combination of flavours that worked perfectly. The mains of Duck breast and duck confit spring rolls and the Waygu beef with foie gras ravioli and chanterals were nothing short of fantastic. The following night we were in Montreal and ate at Joe Beef's Liverpool Restaurant. It was good but Downtown Food was head and shoulders better. Our waitress was so helpful and she recommended a lovely wine at a good price. If you enjoy a touch of food fusion and like flavourful food, do not pass on this great place!

Good environment, but service is overly aggressive for those trying to have a business conversation. We were in the middle of an important conversation and the server interrupted numerous times at critical conversational junctures. Having been a server myself for five years in my younger life, the service seems canned / boilerplate, and with far too many touch points for a restaurant that I would estimate is hosting a high percentage of business people doing deals over lunch. Those people are there to talk primarily. The meal is somewhat secondary.
