  • "All the food we had was unique and appealing and beautifully presented. Chef Darren visited with us and with other diners as well and explained his creations and told us of future plans, and we will definitely return for these! Unfortunately, the service was very slow and there was also some confusion about our order and two courses were brought at the same time. We managed to handle this issue by eating everything! It was all delicious."

  • "What a fantastic find on a Monday night. The room is sleek and spare in a New York way. Not so the menu. Chef Darren MacLean offers up a cornucopia of tasty treats which do change weekly. Not to be missed are the crisp calamari with a thick chili dip, green curry with clams or mussels and the house made ramen. MacLean pulls the noodles himself. Nothing on the menu disappoints. We will be back!"

  • "Twice now I've had Friday lunch here. On my second visit, the service was, as it was the first time around, attentive and gracious. I tried the mussel chowder to start, and the market fish of the day: seared steelhead trout on bouillabaisse, for my main dish. Both were delicious and deceptively filling — the portion sizes seemed a bit small at first glance, but I did not have room for dessert!"

  • "A good selection of starters and mains from fish to wild boar which heartly portion sizes. The ceviche starter was a interesting take on the dish. Highly recommended. The wildboar chop was substantial and tasty. What I woudl praise themost was the service. The fellow serving was attentive but more importantly knowledgeable about the food and could answer our most detailed questions. Very hard to find in Calgary! Extra points for that alone."

  • "I had the ravioli and it was quit good however I found the other dishes good nothing special. I was expecting better decor and atmosphere, having a table right in front of the kitchen door was not ideal. Nothing about this restaurant tuck out other than the fact that the bathrooms although quit modern and fresh had no soap in their soap dispensers, very off putting. I guess it made me think if they can't even fill their soap dispensers, what sort of hygiene is taking place in the kitchen. My recommendation would be take care of the basics first!"

  • "We were a party of four having lunch on a Thursday. We were first seated with only one menu for the whole table. Once we placed our order, it took almost 30 minutes for our entrees to arrive. While the food was general tasty and well presented, the portions were small (even for lunch) given the price. The one bright spot was the amazing tempura squid appetizer. I would go back solely for that dish. I wouldn't recommend this place unless you have time to kill and a small appetite."

  • "While the food is excellent and well-presented, the lunch fish special I ordered was quite small. The amount of fish was fine, but there was not much more besides onions in a sauce. For close to twenty-six dollars, it should include a side salad or vegetables. Comparable lunch at other fine restaurants downtown will get you a side soup or salad and some veggies along with the fish. My guest had the sashimi on rice which was also small, for thirty dollars. I still like this restaurant and would highly recommend it, but it's too bad I had to go back to the office and eat more to feel satisfied."

  • "Plates and glasses were all very dirty, the waitress never checked up on us during the meal. The biggest issue was the Ravioli was really tough and chewy and had a bone in it. When we mentioned this to the waitress, she brushed it off and walked away. The only high note was the entrées were exceptional."

  • "There aren't many good choices for lunch in the 8th Avenue - 6th Street SW area. Therefore, downtownfood is gaining a reputation as a great place to eat. I've been twice because co-workers raved about it. I applaud the concept of the ecosystem on the roof, the solar power, the fresh food and I will continue to hope that downtownfood will grow and evolve. However, I can not call this a GREAT restaurant. The menu is very limited - I get that the fresh food concept will limit the choices. So, I chose the hamburger and was disappointed. The too-large white bread hamburger bun is not appetizing and the fresh cut potato fries are nothing special. I was offered many refills on the water but had to remind the server to refill my coffee."

Definitely going back to try some of the items we didn't but I would also be happy to have exactly the same meal again. The food was both inventive and exceptional.   • "I tried Downtownfood for lunch with a long-time-no-see friend. When I gave the hostess my reservation, the first thing she let me know was they have a turnaround time for lunch and wanted us out of there within 30 min. She was polite but the concept did not work for me. Had I known I would not have chosen it as a sit-down place to have a nice chat with my friend. All restaurants have turnaround time but they manage that instead of asking their guests to do the managing. Bonus - service was fast because they wanted to get people out ASAP Food - decent but not spectacular Decor was great Flexibility of restaurant to be appealing for a variety of dining situations - very low Conclusion: definitely not going again."

Just completely void of any good taste because the kale is so powerful. There where three of us for lunch that day an only one of us liked their meal. fun vibe.   • "I really like the food. We did the Big Taste menu with wine pairing. There was a glass of wine with every course and it was a lot of wine together. The trout was fresh and we really liked the duck leg. The skin was crispy and the meat was soft. The server was friendly and nice. It was a really good dinner. Wonderful experience."

  • "I booked a table for lunch and when we arrived, we were told that the restaurant was very busy over the lunch hour so we only had 45 minutes for our lunch as the table was booked for another party. Not sure I will return to a restaurant where I'm told I need to leave before I even sit down...I booked online so maybe that was the problem... no one told me in advance that we would need to leave."

  • "It's not that I'm NOT recommending this place, it's just not that I AM recommending it. It was OK and the service was great. The wine list is interesting, but the food was trying too hard to be unique (if that makes sense). Calamari was delicious as was my friend's Korean style steak-frites. Korean red pepper spin to most dishes wasn't exactly inspired. Maybe a little more straightforward menu? The decor is trendy, but again uninspired, like it's afraid to take a direction. It's just not a place you walk into and say "WOW" more of a "HUH". May try it again on a night when going to the Globe - it's convenient for that."

  • "Sometimes I hated to destroy the arrangement but once I extracted a tidbit from the side, I couldn't stop. In fact, we would like to see DTF install a plate-licking booth. Our primary server anticipated our needs by recalling our last few visits. My Manhatten arrived - no ice - and tasted old school, the way it is supposed to. We were surprised to hear a mix of all the best classic rock. The best of anything suits us just fine and that's why we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thanks Downtown Food!"

  • "I had wanted to try downtown foods for a very long time and we finally went during the Big Taste YYC Event. The waiter was AMAZING. In fact all of the wait staff were terrific regardless if they were our assigned waiter or not. They were personable and attentive. The food was nice and I would like to come back for a regular evening instead of the gourmet tasting menu but two days later, it is not the food I remember but the service - thank you for a great evening out with friends."

  • "First time for both of us at DTF, nice decor and vibrant lunchtime crowd. We both ordered the 3 course lunch; choice of soup or salad, featured sandwich, and dessert. At 11:55AM the server informed us that the kitchen was out of sandwiches...REALLY?! That was somewhat unimpressive. It would have been a nice gesture if they had offered complimentary dessert for the inconvenience. Fairly limited menu selections. The burger was very good, fries oversalted and overpeppered, and it comes with a small root beer float. Market fish was also tasty, though some garnish with argula or pea shoots would have brightened the dish."

Was short staffed (they explanied that some of the serving staff did not make it in) however service was still very good and I wuold not have noticed anything if they had not pointed it out. Eggplant wonton apatisers where super yummy and the calmari was the best I have had in a long time (thinking kingfisher) with not even a hint of rubery texture. Had the burger (not your ordinary burger!) and will definitely return to try their other dshes."

  • "Ate at Downtown Food with a group of 12 pre theatre in February 2014. The staff and service were excellent, ensured that we were served in lots of time to get to theatre. We sat at a large table in the centre of the room, decor was modern and the noise level was very comfortable, not as loud as one might anticipate. We were there early as we had theatre at 7:30. The food was excellent, I had the Ceviche starter and Sablefish main and both were excellent. The restaurant was a little far from Theatre Calgary about 10 city blocks, on a cold night we were glad of cars to ride in, however on a warmer evening it would have been a pleasant walk, just need to allow sufficient time. Would definitely return."

His style and form rival that of New York City, Europe (both where MacLean cut his culinary teeth), or any great restaurant in the world. Chef MacLean's palate is refined and contemporary. Get the tasting menu and have your own palate educated in great food. Those who stick to the old restaurants of Calgary are surely missing out on a great food experience of a lifetime."
