I was underwhelmed with the food at Downtowner. This was the second time I've been to the restaurant, and frankly I remembered the food as being better when I went there the first time. I ordered the salmon fillet - the salmon was cooked well, but what was underwhelming was how bland it tasted. My suggestion would probably to add some kind of sauce to go along with the salmon fillet, otherwise, it's just really bland.

A friend and I celebrated my birthday at the Downtowner. Loved it. Perfect experience for my birthday; beautiful setting, a booth near the fireplace, not to noisy, excellent service and a wonderful complimentary dessert. We each had the kabobs, chicken for me and beef for my friend. We were very satisfied with our choices and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. A lovely experience in downtown St. Paul. Will definitely go back for another special occasion. Want to keep it special. :)

The food and drinks were very good. The servers weren't friendly and it was a long wait for the drinks. in fact one waitress was gave us the impression that we were bothering her. We had a large group and they started shutting off the lights when we were paying the bill. It felt as if we were holding them up and it wasn't that late. We've been there for brunch and it was much better but I would not recommend it for dinner.

Overall it was good, I don't know if I would rush back. My husband had to Porkbelly (special), we know it would be on the fatty side but over 1/2 of was all fat. I had the filet mignon and it was a good cut but lacked in flavor and I ordered Horseradish Mash potato's and I got plain. Service was great... nice place... wouldn't hurry back.

We were welcomed warmly, and seated by the cheerful fireplace for our dad's annual Veteran's Day appreciation lunch. The food as always was superb, and my dad was treated by the restaurant to a tasty apple cobbler for dessert, in thanks for his service. We were all made to feel like VIPs, but the extra attention and respect for dad, well, it made the day. Thanks so much.

This was our third time eating here. My wife had the kabob chicken which was so marinated and diced with curry it was hard to taste the "wood fired" touches. My steak kabob was very good. Both dishes were amazingly light with vegatables, 2 slices of zucchini, 2 grape tomatoes and one pearl onion. Apparently they tried making up for the lack of vegatables with 2 cups of rice. Had molten chocolate cake for dessert, mainly to get curry taste out of our mouths. It was standard fare, berries were nice touch.

This place has a warm and casual, relaxed atmosphere. When I looked online, I had the impression the feel would be a bit more elegant than it was. There are well-worn booths and wooden table tops. Nice fireplaces. Just a cozy, familiar atmosphere--nothing special, at least at brunch. The breakfast menu was pretty basic, but I felt it was over-priced for the fare. Many of the selections did not include meat, which would have added $4.50 to your selection. I had the egg, spinach and cream cheese entree which included hashbrowns and toast---no meat. The cream cheese was in clumps in the egg and not too appetizing. I have to say the hashbrowns were awesome, however! My husband had the heuvos rancheros and said it was very good.

We regularly go to the Ordway and like to have dinner first at a nearby location. The Downtowner offers free parking, quick and pleasant service, and at a moderate price. We usually have one of their fire grilled specialties which are always very good. We like the warm greeting we receive and the friendly and efficient service. Do check to make sure there isn't a Wild game the same evening as it does get pretty crowded on those nights.

The roasted pear and chicken salad I had was perfect for my dietary needs and nicely presented. The wait staff were very accommodating and made our occasion most delightful. Definitely will be back!

First time to Downtowner, and we were impressed. My wife had a 'margherini' that she raved about. She had the salmon and loved it. I had the New York Strip and found myself wishing I had gotten something else. It was cooked exactly how I wanted it but had more edge fat/grizzle & connective tissue than expected, so was a little hard to cut. Ambiance is great, as was pleasant service. We'll be back.

The ambiance, staff and service were wonderful here. We could not have been treated better. At least two of us did not enjoy our breakfasts. The eggs Benedict hollondaise tasted as though it had meat gravy mixed in with it. The french toast was crusty. The hashbrowns were well done as we'd requested but tasted greasy. Everyone was so pleasant and helpful that I hate to complain. I would not go back for breakfast but would be willing to try lunch or dinner.

My sister recommended this restaurant for a gathering place for a group of us from out of town. They set us up with a round table that made it easy to communicate with everyone in the group. The menu had a nice variety including pasta dishes for those who wanted to cargo load for the marathon but it also included a variety of other selections for those not running or who had other pre-race rule loading needs. I enjoyed the special that evening and one of my friends who likes lamb said that it was cooked perfectly to his taste.

We were fortunate that our group of 4 were seated by the cozy fireplace on a chilly evening. This made for a very comfortable and enjoyable evening. Two members of our party had the short rib special and said it was delicious. One had a hamburger and raved about it. Mine was the fire roasted sirloin, which I had had before and enjoyed. This night it was a bit dry and the basmati rice was rather bland, which I had not remembered from the last time I had it. The Caesar salads we had were enjoyed by all. Our service was very good. We will return for dinner and/or brunch which we have enjoyed in the past.

I'm new to town and this was a great first experience for a restaurant in the twin cities. It was a dinner to celebrate my eleventh anniversary and everything went better than expected. The atmosphere was great, the crowd was great the food was good and I can't wait to come back. The host at the front door and waitress we had were very nice, and helpful. It may have been the time of our arrival, but the vibe I got was more of a slower pace and purposefully set for you to enjoy your time. Not really important but my wife noted that although you have complete visual access to the kitchen, she didn't hear a sound as they prepared the meals and I would say that is fairly impressive.

Made a reservation at the last minute, for a BDay Lunch on a Friday with no problem. The table location was great, a nice booth, plus there was a fire in the fire place. The wood fire pizza is always great and the beet and goat cheese salad is the best in St. Paul. We were a bit of an unruly bunch ordering off the menu and making special requests, but our waiter took it all in stride. Our waiter even surprised us with birthday dessert!
