It took 20 minutes to see our waitress for the first time, and another 15-20 to get our drink order. Other waitresses were hustling, but not ours. We frequent a steak house down the street, and this waitress wouldn't have a job there. We make reservations as soon as we buy tickets for shows or events at the Excel Energy Center. While there are a lot of options around the Excel, none have the quality of food and service that we get at the Downtowner Woodfire Grill. The service is warm and friendly and never pushy. But we didn't have any trouble hearing each other across the table. I'm not sure about some of the categories above (foodies, bar scene, kid friendly, etc.) as we're not drinkers, there weren't kids there...but our experience was awesome. The food was wonderful, everything came out hot, my steak was cooked to perfection and 'oh-so-tender'! Other dishes at our table were the halibut special, lamb and salmon. Everyone agreed it was delish and presentation and portions were also great! Definitely a come-back-to place. The Bishop was in town from Green Bay so we needed a nice place, superb food for less than $35, classy environment without white tablecloths, and in downtown St. Paul without $10 an hour parking and a hidden location that takes a half hour just to find. And this place delivered. It was the first time I ever went there and a gamble since the Bishop and all my brothers were counting on me to come through with the right choice. It was perfect.
I went on a Monday Night at 5:45 and there was very few people there, servers waiting to wait on you and the special was a delicous Lamb shank with plenty of Mashpotatoes, also superb, for $20. This is a great choice to go if you want to visit with friends. It is quiet enough to have good conversation without straining to hear. The service was attentive but not intrusive and we did not feel rushed to order or rushed to leave once we had finished eating. Menu is varied -something for everyone. At our table orders included pizza, pasta and kabobs. Everyone was happy. There was a chopped salad that I thought I wanted until she told me in detail what it was like and I opted for the tuna nicoise instead. The tuna was seasoned and cooked perfectly. She also voluntarily brought more dressing after noticing there was hardly any on the salad. My husband had the salmon and although it was well seasoned, it was over cooked. We had barely sat down when a helper greeted us and poured us water. It was only minutes later when our waitress arrived to take our drink order. I randomly picked the restaurant for that special night and I am so glad I did! I was only expecting a good meal and a nice atmosphere, but the staff went above and beyond when they saw or heard what was going on. I did not expect them to make that night anymore special than it already was, but they certainly did! Perfect atmosphere! Excellent food! and a awesome staff! A great alternative to the craziness going on elsewhere but yet still Irish fun. Loved our waitress and the management staff. The excellence of the four dishes made it very hard to narrow the selection to just three. I can recommend the Persian fire-roasted chicken, the bone-in cowboy rib eye, fettuccine Alfredo, and some surprisingly tender, juicy and flavorful pork chops from Fischer farms.
